New to Who

The Cardiff rift seen in Unquiet Dead becomes important in some later Doctor Who stories, but especially in Torchwood. In fact, the actress who played Gwyneth (Eve Myles) plays Gwen, one of Torchwood's leads, later on.

Another Torchwood character, Tosh, played by Naoko Mori also appears in the next story as well (Although it wasn't quite confirmed that they were the same until later on).

I watched half of the 4th episode before skipping to the Dalek episode. Despite the pleading and promise of good episodes I decided to head straight for The Christmas Invasion, and loved it. Well, once he woke up, started quoting The Lion King, and going all pj's-sword-fighting-badass:)

Well if you are going to skip to the Tenth Doctor I'd recommend at least watching the transition point, which was a Children in Need special for 2005 (a 6 minute or so short) that bridges the end of the first season with the start of the Christmas special.

It wasn't made explicit in dialogue until very late, but it was always a safe bet that "Dr. Sato" and "Toshiko Sato" were the same person.

Gah, you skipped some great (and important) stuff there.

Agreed, she should go to her room. ;)

Which others should pick up as a referrence to the excellent two-parter "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances"

Yeah, "Doctor Dances" is absolutely fantastic two parter. Actually looking at that series, every episode after "Dalek" is either great or important. It's just the start that's ropey.

and thanks Ithekro, watching that mini-sode, I'd forgotten just how good Tennant was.

The quality on that vid isn't very good. I am sure there are better ones someplace.

Tennant was living the dream job for a Doctor Who fanboy. He was the Doctor. Capaldi is living it now as well.

"The Empty Child" and The Doctor Dances" is good as it gives basically the transition between the damaged, angry Ninth Doctor, and his more redeemed version that would stay with the Tenth Doctor. A Doctor that finally gets to be the Doctor again like he use to enough back when he was running around the universe....before the Time War.

It also has some funny moments that are more like what you'd see for the Tenth Doctor and have seen with the Eleventh Doctor as this was Steven Moffat's first story for the new series. It also starts a few running gags that continue even to the present series.

*Imitates Lilo* I'm already in my room!!

I can always go back and give it another try one day.

Sure, still kinda a missed opportunity for some insight into the Doctor's psyche.
Eccleston is the Doctor's life immediately after the War Doctor's experience in Day of the Doctor.
I actually thought it was a bit of a brilliant way to watch him. instead of following Capaldi after Smith, to follow the (War) Doctor instead.

I didn't know that. Interesting. You make a good point but I just wasn't enjoying it, and if I don't enjoy something, I'm not going to partake in it just to get to the good stuff. But that's just me. I couldn't get into Nine. We all have different tastes.

School Reunion was very reminiscent of Buffy: evil goings on at school and (evil) Giles! Um, I mean Tony Head. Rose seemed really ecstatic that Mickey wanted to join them. Relationship drama full steam ahead!

Sarah Jane actually has her own spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures. The Doctor-as Tennant and Smith-guest-stars in four episodes (I think for the most part the series was composed of two-parters). Sarah Jane also appears a bit in later Tennant stories (unfortunately Elisabeth died a few years ago)

It's an OK show, a bit cornier than WHO, and featuring some of Who's sillier monsters such as the Slitheen and Judoon (Although it did come up with some interesting monsters on it's own such as the Trickstar).

If you ever check out the classic series, Sarah Jane appeared in seasons eleven through fourteen, at first teamed with Jon Pertwee in his final season, and then with Tom Baker. Her last episode was "The Hand of Fear" which was referenced in School Reunion (The Doctor leaving her in the wrong place). He later ships her the K-9 Mk III in a one-off special "K-9 and Company". (The Doctor traveled with K-9s Mk I and II in seasons 15 through 18, who left with other companions).

Cool! I'll definitely have to check it out... Eventually. I thought she was great:) Unlike Clara, I doubt I'll ever warm to Rose. She just rubs me the wrong way. I'm glad she won't be in season 3 and only a bit in 4.

There's also Martha and Donna. Martha's sort of a smarter companion, although like Rose she sort of has an annoying family. She has a crush on the Doctor (Which he doesn't return, because he's still hung up on Rose) which is a bit weird though. She also appears in a few episodes of season 4 and in a few episodes of Torchwood.

There's also Donna, introduced in the Runaway Bride (The next Christmas special) but featured as a companion in season 4. At first people thought it was kind of stunt casting since she's a fairly popular comedian, but she actually was pretty good. She's not a romantic foil for the Doctor, but more of a cool friend (She also appears in River's debut story BTW). Her grandfather, Wilfred, is also a cool character and semi-companion.

Donna Noble starts out as the most irritating companion ever, at least of the revived series... but she grows so much that she's ended up as my favorite companion to this day.

Dodo Chaplet, the Hartnell companion is actually a strange case. She's played by 25 year old Jackie Lane but the character is indicated on screen as time goes on to be teenaged and sometimes it's implied on screen that she was still in school when she joins the Doctor. One big name Doctor Who fan famously pointed out that the character's chronological age gets younger as her TV episodes progress!

I'm wondering if that might have to do with watching Smith first, rather than Eccleston. I think Eccleston was a good Doctor, but hasn't this always been the case with the Doctor with whomever is your Doctor usually the first one you remember watching on TV you don't always warm to their replacement, My favourite out of the current era is Tennant with I think Eccleston in second place I would rank Capaldi 's and Smith about equal. But that's one of the great things about DW, you might not warm to a particular Doctor or Companion, but give it a few years and they'll be a new Doctor and/or companion.

As for who my Doctor is I remember watching the Fourth Doctor, but I remember the Fifth Doctor more.

Maybe. But I think it's due to the fact that Ten and Eleven are more fun whereas Nine is more serious. I've always preferred comedy over drama. I'm in no way saying that Nine is a bad Doctor. I just couldn't connect with him but that's okay. It's like Star Trek or James Bond, not everyone is going to like a certain show or actor.

When you go back to it, just consider his whole season the arc where he deals with his PTSD.
