New to Who

Capaldi wants to see the original style Cybermen again. Their speech pattern is really creepy.

You are up to the "... Of the Doctor" arc. This is the meat of the 50th anniversary celebrations.
I would recommend to watch "Name...", then make a slight detour with "an adventure in space and time" if you want (only watch with tissues at hand, you WILL need them!).
Then the "Night..." prologue short, "Day...", another optional detour with "the five(ish) Doctors reboot" if you can find it (it's a mockumentary about some of the older Doctor's dealing with the anniversary and their (lack of) participation. It's absolutely hilarious:lol: ).
And then conclude with "Time..." (Keep tissues ready again)

Thanks for the recommendations:)

Oh right. Forgot about the Christmas special. I plan on going backwards mostly because David Tennant seems to be the most popular of all the doctors, from what I've heard, and the name Rose Tyler keeps popping up so I'm intrigued.

But before I dive into the earlier seasons I will be taking a mini break to read some of the novels.

Well perhaps the most popular of the modern era of the show as for most popular Doctor. I suspect that the Fourth Doctor might still win that poll.

Remember him. You might see him, or just his scarf, again.

For popularity, it depends on the mood of the fans that year. Usually it is Tom Baker, but every once in a while its David Tennant.

The Name Of The Doctor was great! The stuff with Clara seeing all the previous incarnations was cool. Seeing the Doctor cry when Clara told him that his secret had been discovered was heartbreaking. He's such a happy-go-lucky guy so it's sad whenever he breaks down.

I never realized how much I missed River until she showed up again. Okay, so she's been dead all this time? Confused.

Next up An Adventure in Time and Space, as suggested by Timelord Victorious.

Sorry. No spoilers on this one. The answer will have to wait for another time.

The answers about River are in season 4's Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, during the Tennant era. This was her debut episode-and it was also written by Moffat, so when he got the producer job he sort of continued her story. Or started it rather.

Adventure in Space And Time has some familiar faces in it's cast-apart from Bradley, there's Jessica Raine, who was in Hide, as Verity Lambert; and Brian Cox, who played an alien in Tennant's finale, as Sydney Newman. Both created the original show-Cox had the basic concept, Verity produced it and helped introduce the ' bug eyed monster' concept which would stick with the show. Also the original companion actors from Hartnell's era, William Russell and Carole Ann Ford make cameos in different roles (unfortunately Jaqueline Hill, the third companion died in the early 90s from cancer)., while James Glover, son of Julian Glover who was in the popular Tom Baker story City Of Death, plays William Russell.

Plus there's also a surprise cameo that's cool but I won't spoil it.

I should have known someone would use that response!

I ended up watching The Name Of The Doctor a second time because I enjoyed it so much. My fondness for Clara has gone up. Not Amy-Level Love but it's a start. Her willingness to sacrifice herself for the Doctor spoke volumes of her character. I'm going to miss these two being travel buddies.

Okay, now I'm off to watch the movie.

Hope you remembered the tissues, cause you will likely cry your eyes out. Sorry ;)

Anyway. Once you have recovered here are the minisodes that serve as a prologue to the Day of the Doctor.

The Night of the Doctor

Not really necessary and kinda meh, The Last Day (before the fall of Arcadia)

And just to complete the experience, watch immediately before the Day of the Doctor to recreate the movie theatre experience we had back in the day as best as possible:

I really recommend seeing Night of the Doctor alongside Day, because its an excellent prologue to it. Seeing how the Doctor became the Warrior and then un-became him.

Name of The Doctor
Night of The Doctor
Day of The Doctor
Time of The Doctor

These four episodes/mini-sodes are meant to be watched together.

Is there any kind of comprehensive listing of all of the various mini-sodes? Everytime I think I've tracked them all down, I find a new one.

I watched the movie. It was really good! Had a lot of heartfelt moments too. I think it was really cool the show had a female producer back then! I was surprised to find out that it's a kids show, doesn't seem like it from what I've watched.

I'm going to try and find The Five Doctors documentary. Anything to hold off on The Time Of The Doctor.

Um....
Name of The Doctor
Night of The Doctor
Day of The Doctor
Time of The Doctor

These four episodes/mini-sodes are meant to be watched together.

As for the rest, series 8 has no mini-sodes whatsoever. So technically, Night of the Doctor is the last one you'd have to worry about.

Depends how important you think the mini-episodes/on-line stuff is.
The TARDIS-odes for season 2/28 aren't on the DVD, even though some are quite nice.
He Said She Said is more of a trailer for Name of the Doctor than an actual mini-episode.
But then Six Days After, Night of the Doctor, etc, are all stuff that makes a point in ongoing continuity. And stuff like Pond Life and The Leaf is nice to see, even if it's missable. And the DVD/online stuff like Clara and the TARDIS, The Inforarium, and the four Nights and Rain Gods.
And then we have Space/Time, and Time Crash...
Very little is essential apart from Night of the Doctor. A lot is superb.

Yeah, I've seen "Time Crash". "Night of the Doctor", "Pond Life" and a bunch of others, but have discovered several that I hadn't seen right here in this thread. I'm a completest, so I would like to see as much of everything as I can.
