Aww, I like The Crimson Horror, I think it's hilarious! I love Vastra, Jenny and Strax, and that the got so much attention in this story. It was practically the Doctor-lite episode for this season (a tradition that goes back to Tennant's first season). Diana Rigg was having a whale of a time being unrepentantly evil.
Ah, see I don't think that's right. 7 may not be as serialized as 6, but there is still an arc - it's just less blatant and in your face. And I'm not even talking about the 'impossible girl' maguffin. There are a lot of subtle hints, themes, motifs etc that lead you up to the season finale and beyond. They just don't jump and down in front of you shouting "we've got an arc hahahaha!" Which is actually back to the way RTD used to do it.
I always wondered what the hell that was about - it seemed rather pointless, especially at this point in the story. It makes more sense placing it with the season 6 stuff. It's basically just there to give a glimpse of what 11 and River are like as a bickering married couple.

Her role in the show changes a lot. For Smith, Clara was the Impossible Girl mystery, and everything revolved around that. For Capaldi she becomes a character, and it's about being a best friend to the Doctor as he learns his new self vs ... other things in the plot.

Nightmare in Silver introduces a new Cybermen design (Basically a thinner, more "Iron Man" style look IMO), but unfortunately it's sort of a poor story otherwise. A lamentable weakness of the Cybermen from the classic series is brought back, the Cybermen are further borgified by being part of a collective now, and Clara is really out of character for some reason.
On the plus side, Matt Smith is fun squaring off against a Cyber-version of himself, and Warwick Davis-famous for his Harry Potter, Star Wars, Willow and other roles is fun in a supporting role.

For better or worse Clara is pretty much a different person in series 8.

I should add, that I hope there is some sort of closure for the Paternoster gang. I dunno if the prospect of a spin-off was just some fans' fantasy or was actually considered, but I think having a married lesbian couple, one being a Silurian - plus a Sontaran butler - running around Victorian London without it affecting time or even making news (especially in Deep Breath when no one seemed to take notice) seems odd. I wonder if Strax can ever be reassimilated into Sontaran society. The invention of Vastra and Strax has kinda nullified their respective races ever being serious threats to the Doctor.
Strax is my favourite out of the three. Watching him try to discipline the horse in The Crimson Horror was hilarious! I'm actually re-considering watching the first 4 seasons in favour of 8 and 9 just to see more of them.
Just finished Nightmare In Silver. Kind of meh. I didn't find the Cyberman all that scary. They looked really adorable face-wise. The back and forth fight between "Mr. Clever" and the Doctor was freaking cool! I think Clara is starting to grow on me...

It was blackmail from the kids. And they were going to a theme park. Just a little bit late, as the TARDIS does from time to time. And a always the Doctor doesn't really look stuff up before going places.

I would recommend to watch "Name...", then make a slight detour with "an adventure in space and time" if you want (only watch with tissues at hand, you WILL need them!).
Then the "Night..." prologue short, "Day...", another optional detour with "the five(ish) Doctors reboot" if you can find it (it's a mockumentary about some of the older Doctor's dealing with the anniversary and their (lack of) participation. It's absolutely hilarious ).

The Cybermen are probably the most re-worked monster in the entire series. While the Daleks have more or less remained the same with a few tweaks here and there (and some which were reversed like the "Victory" versions), the Cybermen pretty much are altered voice and design wise almost every time (Although not as much in the new series, the Tennant and early Smith ones are pretty much the same with some changes).
They actually kind of started as guys in cloth masks, which might seem sort of a dated design but are kind of creepy if you think about it.

I've never really been a fan of the cybermen. (Maybe because I grew up on the Borg; it spoiled me). They never seem very successful in anything they do and their motivation seems lacking. However, I did like the originals in "The Tenth Planet". The masks made them creepy and unnatural. And they were truly CYBER - MEN; People with implants. Nowadays they are basically robots with a brain - but a brain pretty much lacking independent thought, so what's the point?
