New to Who

Yeah they both had to wear wigs and I read an old interview with Karen and she said that she really wanted to switch wigs with Matt for the regeneration scene. It would have been pretty funny if they had!

I meant to say her American accent. I couldn't tell it was her.

The accent Karen uses in Selfie takes a while to get used to.

What used to be called Mallspeak, but is now thought of as live-texting.

So Dark Water... Um who is The Master? I'm guessing this is something from the classic series which is why I'm drawing a complete blank.

The Master shows up in the classic series, and a few times during The 10th Doctor's era. He's an evil Timelord who the Doctor has fought over several incarnations (for both of them, The Master has regenerated/switched bodies several times), all across time and space. Outside of The Daleks and maybe the Cybermen he's probably the most frequent recurring villain for The Doctor, at least in the classic era. His general goals seem to change, but generally involve death/chaos and/or messing with/trying to kill The Doctor. He first showed up in the 3rd Doctor's era, and has ended up interacting with all the Doctor's since then, except for 9 and 11.

Dark Water is the first time The Master was
The Mistress
, fyi. I thought it worked well, even if it wasn't the biggest shock if you went into series 8 knowing who The Master was.

This is why I suggested watching Utopia and two other episodes that ended the Third series.

Remember...evil Timelord?

I LOVE this song!

(Spoiler free Continuity is for good little boys and girls.)

The Doctor and the Master also used to be best friends (and it's implied at times, perhaps relatives). Although initially his origin is unknown (Like in many ways, the Doctor's), Russel T. Davies gave him some backstory-that he went mad after looking into the untempered schism (Which was mentioned a few times in Matt Smith's run, it's basically sort of an opened part of the time vortex that played some part in Time Lord evolution or something). As a result he got "the sound of drums" stuck in his head (Although this is never mentioned in the original series, or in the season 8 episodes). The real reason for the Sound of drums is explained in Tennant's finale, The End Of Time though.

Some more stuff. I'm going to put a bit of this in spoiler code.

Basically, seeded throughout season 3 is the possibility that the Doctor is not the only survivor of the Time War, and also a mysterious individual called Harold Saxon is shadowing the Doctor and Martha. In season 3's Utopia, the Doctor-now with Captain Jack also in tow-journey to an era near the end of the universe, where the last remnants of humankind are trying to get a spaceship to go to a place called "Utopia", with the help of a kindly old scientist, Yana (Derek Jacobi). However, Martha discovers that Yana has a "Chameleon Arch"-a watch-like device that turns Time Lords into humans, and also stores their memories-The Doctor used it to escape from bad guys in an earlier story. Martha noticing the watch causes Yana to notice it too. He opens it, restoring his time lord biology and memories, and he becomes his former identity-The Master, who the Doctor presumed dead like the other Time Lords, but who actually survived by hiding from the Daleks using the arch.

After showing how evil he now is by killing his long time assistant, she shoots him, which triggers a regeneration into a younger form (John Simm). The new Master steals the TARDIS, and using his hypnotic powers and other deceptions, eventually becomes prime minister "Harold Saxon", and capturing the Doctor, Martha, Jack, and Martha's family, and with the help of the "Toclofane" (The humans from the future who have devolved and been placed in sphere war machines almost like Daleks) pretty much decimates humanity and uses it to turn earth into a war machine against the rest of the universe. The Doctor and co. of course stop him (After a year spent under his control), and actually reverse the changes he brought to Earth. However, the Master is then shot by his 'wife' Lucy. The Doctor cremates his body but part of him-a ring-survives.

Later in "The End Of Time" the ring is revealed to have his essence (Sort of like the Chameleon arch), and using Lucy some followers of him ressurect him in his "Saxon" body. However, the ressurection doesn't turn out as planned, and the Master becomes an even more insane, ravenous and destitute version of himself. He also gains the ability to shoot lightning, and his skin ocassionally has an 'x-ray' effect. However he eventually gets some alien technology-due to a sort of misplaced trust by a wealthy benefactor who believes he can use the Master's genius-and eventually uses it to turn all humans into dopellgangers of himself (Seriously). Without going into too much detail and technobabble, this sort of helps bring back the Time Lords (Before the events of "Day"). The Doctor decides though to sever the link between the Master and the Time Lords, which causes the Time Lords/Gallifrey to return to a sort of "Time locked" state. The Master goes with them, blaming them for the sound of drums thing and his whole evilness thing.

At this point it's unclear how the Master/Mistress escaped from the Time lock/other dimension/whatever Gallifrey escaped from, and how he became "Missy", especially since his/her last body appeared to be dying and possibly incapable of regeneration. Although promo material from season 9 might imply it had something to do with the Sisterhood of Karn seen in "Night of the Doctor" (and also in the classic story Brain of Morbius).

not to sound snotty, but I also warned you about the dangers of hopping around when it comes to NuWho....You'll start getting confused.

That's why you don't skip batches of episodes and jump around randomly.:vulcan:

Your first mistake was starting with series 5 and it got worse after that. Despite what some people might have told you, it does matter where you start and the show does have continuity. You can ignore the old show, everything from that gets properly reintroduced but the new show assumes that its audience is familiar with that version, at least with the major events and recurring characters.

Well, 8 was definitely different. Much darker and kind of lacked spark. The writing wasn't great and the episodes were disappointing for the most part. I did enjoy The Caretaker, Mummy On The Orient Express, and Flatline.

I thought Peter Capaldi did a very good job but I didn't like Twelve. I wanted to so much. I knew that he wasn't going to be all warm and fuzzy and I was fine with that. But most of the time he was mean. His and Clara's relationship became abusive on both ends. He would yell at her, she would yell (and slap) at him. Her constant threatening to leave grew old. It was like watching that couple in high school that was always breaking up and getting back together. There was a sense of mistrust between them. I do think the two of them had a weird chemistry that still worked.

As for Clara herself, I liked that she was given more than just "The Impossible Girl" but her regular life seemed to take center stage, ahead of the Doctor, and that was pretty boring. Especially when it came to Danny Pink. A romance for Clara could have worked if they had an actor who could actually act and had chemistry with his love interest.

I might watch series 9 just to see how Twelve's second outing goes.

Did you watch the Christmas Special? It appears to take things in a different direction for S9

No it wasn't on there yet.
BBC America, generally plays (At least) the previous Season and Christmas Special before the Season Premiere (And I believe at least one other Country's Channel does the same), so check your Doctor Who Channel's scheduling from the week before until the premiere and you may get lucky to see it right before the Premiere.

“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines
Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines
In two straight lines they broke their bread
And brushed their teeth and went to bed.
They left the house at half past nine
In two straight lines in rain or shine-
The smallest one was Madeline.”

I was wondering if anyone would get the reference. Good job!

Right now series 8 is playing again so the Christmas special should be on again. What is the general consensus regarding Twelve? Is he mostly liked or hated, or split?
