News new Stargate series in the works (continuation of TV universe, no reboot)

Under the US it’s under Department of Homeworld Defense and they have agreements with Russia, China, England and Germany Fie resource and intel sharing.

I believe Canada was involved as well.
Rodney had a Canadian symbol on his uniform.

That doesn't mean Canada was part of the IOA. The people in Atlantis wear the flags of their native nations regardless if those nations are part of the IOA or not. Indeed, we never once see Canada represented in any of the IOA episodes. Though the episode Lost City does imply the Canadian government is aware of the Stargate program, given President Hayes wants the Canadian government informed of an impending Goa'uld attack.

I think with so many countries involved, by now things probably would have become more international with all of the countries pretty much equal.
One thing I'd want is for them to give it the budget to give us more aliens. After a while I got kind tired of all of the humans they ran into on SG-1 and Atlantis.

So for a hypothetical new series. What type of team members would you write/create?

I think a female lead would be interesting. It's about time too. We've already had 4 main leads as males. Time for a woman to spout all the one-liners

How about a replicator human on the team to serve as the token alien/outsider like Teal'c or Teyla? I bet that would cause alot of tension

I hope they don’t bring back replicators again. They did them to death in SG1 and definitively destroyed them.

For team I don’t care what demographics they go with in terms of actors. I’d like to see a totally new team of people who just now learned the Stargate exists so everything is new to them.

One idea I might have for a gimmick character. Maybe they found a medical procedure to reverse the corruption of the sarcophagus for gu’ald, and have a repentant gu’ald on the team.

Also I hope we finally meet the furlings.

I am definitely down for a female lead who does the one-liners.

But a totally new team who just now learned about it? Nahh.. They need to have AT LEAST one "veteran", and they need to NOT make the transition too easy for newbies. That's where ATlantis failed with Shepard and Lt. Ford. Ford seemed to be a veteran, the way he was so casually diivng into the gate. They missed a huge opportunity to make him the "guide" for missions (as far as teaching SHepard how protocols are lived out in the real world).

I wonder, though, if they were to use some previous characters, who would be a good fit?

They can have veterans back on the base but I think that having the veteran on the missions who already knows the ropes would diminish the adaptability and create a kind of cliche cop movie dynamic of the stodgy old guy and the impulsive but effective new guy.

I would like to see a dynamic of a team that still has the sense of wonder and doesn't have a decade of bias and expectations from their previous experience.

Tough to think of previous characters I want. A few appearances from McKay would be cool, or Eli. There's not a lot of minor characters I can think of who are both interesting and alive. I think the prodigy's name was Haley?

I'd definitely like to see what happened with the Tok'ra after they left the alliance. I'm not sure what happened to them at the end of the series cause I was only watching off and on in seasons 9 and 10. Or, do we know for 100% certainty there weren't any Tollan survivors? All we know is they couldn't get to their gate. Armin Shimmerman's Nox character would also be cool to see.

Stargate Universe was way ahead of it's time. I think in the streming era, it would have thrived.

Like everyone else, I hated it at the time. The tonal shift from SG-1/SGA (which I love very much) was enourmous.

I liked the tone of the series a lot, but it did need time to find its feet after setting up a really cool premise in the pilot episode. The characters were also bland and boring at the start. I don't blame people for not sticking with it until it hit its stride.

I think I'd have them literally be the new SG-1. There's no way any of the previous team members would still be part of SG-1. Most would have been promoted or left to pursue other things such as Teal'c leading the Jaffa. So you have a new team taking up the SG-1 mantle.

As for what kinds of characters to include, I agree that a female leader would be good. We had Sam for one season, but that wasn't really enough. I think what would be most important is giving them all very clear roles in the story. So like how Jack sees things from the practical point of view, Daniel makes the emotional argument, Sam figures out the science stuff, Teal'c brings the outsider's point of view. These traits can be used in almost any story and can come into natural conflict with each other. That's a huge part of why they're a great group of characters.

I definitely wasn't thinking previous leads so much as just someone with experience.

But i totally agree with you is having distinct roles, which might conflict with each other, will make for a great team.

I hope they also have some significant and thought up back stories to help drive those characters. And again, having a couple of "veterans", they might be able to get some stock footage to add into the new stuff (like they did with Mitchell, but have that be more relevent to their current SG role).

How about this. Jack's son from an alternate universe all grown up?

The alternate universe is destroyed so Charlie has to live in the prime universe and lead a new team.

Or the clone of Jack, he is in his thirties I guess. Then they can de-age Richard Dean Anderson ;)

If they are going to bring back people from the earlier shows, then we need to have at least one member of the original SG-1 make even just a brief cameo.

That's probably a given. They all loved working on the show. Two of them(Amanda and Shanks) live in Canada so it wouldn't be an issue

By the time we got to "Universe" the rights issue seems to have been worked out. Carter/Amanda was able to be in "Universe". It wasn't just Jack Oneill and Daniel Jackson who could appear in the pilot of "Universe"

When the 'Stargate Atlantis' pilot was filmed, there were four regular characters in Stargate SG-1, but only two of them (Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson) appear in Rising. According to Amanda Tapping, who played Samantha Carter, her character and Teal'c weren't allowed to appear due to rights issues. They were created for the Stargate SG-1 TV show, and including them in the new show would mean using the work from one of the producers to boost a new, different show. Jack and Daniel already appeared in the Stargate movie and therefore they weren't affected. Anyway, the four of them appear in several Stargate Atlantis episodes throughout its five seasons.

I believe either Wright or Mallozzi said that old characters would appear. I just hope (and this is of course assuming the series happens) that they don't go the Picard route. I don't want to see Ry'ac get his eyes plucked out, or find out that McKay and Keller had a kid who died. Can we just assume that they're all happy?

The way I understood it was that they didn't want to have characters created for the movie by Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich appearing in the same episodes as characters created for TV by Jonathan Glassner & Brad Wright, because that would double the number of creators they'd have to pay residuals to (well, except maybe Wright, because he was still on staff). So they had O'Neill and Jackson appear in some episodes and Carter & Teal'c in others, but not mix the two sets, so they'd only have to pay one set of writers at a time.

They did eventually have O'Neill and Woolsey appear together, but Woolsey was a Cooper/Wright creation, so he was "in-house," as it were.

That's not how stories work, though. Stories are about characters facing conflict and challenge, so it's contradictory to say you want characters to come back but not face any difficulties. There's a reason that "happily ever after" only comes at the end of the story.

It depends. There are times that you do have to put your characters through hell for a better story, and then you have things like Picard where it did feel like in the years between everyone just suffered. That's what I don't want to see. When there are characters I've followed for years and I enjoy watching, once their main story is over I feel that how we last see them should be honored.

So as an example, I'm not a Star Wars fan, and the only two movies I've seen are ANH and TPM, but if I was a fan, then I'd hate the idea that not long after defeating the Empire, evil rises again and Luke and his whole family all die. I'm not a fan of revisiting a franchise and bringing misery to established characters just to try and inject some drama.

But how much misery did they face the first time around? Heck, in the first movie, Luke had his foster parents and his mentor murdered, and Leia was tortured and saw her whole planet destroyed in front of her. As for Picard, he got stabbed in the chest and needed an artificial heart, he saw his best friend killed and was guilty about being attracted to his wife, he had his first command destroyed by the Ferengi and was court-martialed by his girlfriend, he was assimilated by the Borg, he was tortured by the Cardassians, etc. etc. etc. Stories are not about happy fun times. It's bizarre how quick people are to forget that when it comes to nostalgia.

I'd have a brand new SG team, probably six rather than four.

Carter would fill the late season O'Neill role of top brass in a recurring role and have Sheppard as the regular head of the field programme, maybe Mitchell as his no 2. Plenty of opportunities to bring in old friends from either parent show then.

I'd particularly like to see Rodney, Beckett and Daniel in occasional advisory roles. Maybe even Eli. Used sparingly and judiciously over the seasons.

Edit - Mitchell could be in charge at an off Earth "B" site. There should be one by now, as well as Atlantis.

They seemed to get over that when SGU came along, given O'Neill, Daniel and Carter all appear in the pilot episode, and O'Neill appears with Carter in an episode later on in the first season.

It would be cool to see Carter as the head of the entire Stargate program, or at least as the highest ranking Air Force officer.
