News new Stargate series in the works (continuation of TV universe, no reboot)

I just don't see SG-1/extended universe as having enough of a fanbase still sticking around to sustain a 'continued universe' story TBH. The 'reboot/stargate' thing made more sense at least from an expanding the interest level IMO.

Are you really going to pick-up new fans who haven't watched the past series?

No series revival can ever succeed by relying on the pre-existing fanbase alone, because it's just not large enough. Pre-existing fans have an exaggerated impression of their own importance. Even for the original series, the serious fans would've been only a percentage of the audience, with the rest being more casual viewers; and the longer the series has been off the air, the more the fanbase would have shrunk from attrition. So the core fanbase for any franchise is never going to be large enough by itself to make a new show successful in the ratings. That's the whole reason revivals are made -- to introduce the series to a new audience of casual viewers and new-made fans. To grow the audience, not just pander to the one that's already there.

So there's no reason a continuation of an existing universe can't appeal to new viewers. That's the goal of any spinoff or sequel series as a matter of course. The key is not to rely solely on continuity porn, but to create something interesting enough to have appeal on its own while still fitting into the continuity that came before.

If they continue the existing universe I'm not sure if they could get back to the kind of ground battles and sense of 'Modern humans holding their own against mysterious advanced aliens' we saw in the first few seasons of SG1. There's so much tech in the universe now you can't get back in the bottle. It will be interesting to see what direction they go.

Right. In Stargate: Continuum Carter spoke to O'Neill about plans for a MOONBASE. If the new show follows normal progression of time then I expect the Stargate to have been revealed to the public for a few years( 2015?) and more advanced ships/fighters than what they had in 2007/2008.

The whole shebang has bern on amazon for awhile now. And it was on Netflix like 10 years ago.
Cautiously optimistic .. But waiting for more news

I would love to see a series set in a world where the Stargate is public knowledge. They kept up the secrecy angle long past the point when it made any sense. From a narrative standpoint, there were so many civilian characters already in the loop about the SGC and aliens -- huge numbers of military personnel, hundreds or thousands of scientists, various reporters and industrialists, and most major governments -- that the pretense of secrecy no longer served any story purpose and had become outright incongruous. And from an ethical standpoint, the continued secrecy was abominable. If Earth is a major player in galactic or even intergalactic politics, then the citizens of Earth should absolutely have the right to know about and weigh in on the decisions being made on their behalf.

Besides, I've always felt that the value of science fiction is exploring how human life and society are transformed by a new discovery or phenomenon. Keeping it secret in order to maintain the pretense that a show is set in "the real world" is a copout, a failure to embrace the potential of the genre. I mean, it's disingenuous. We know the show isn't really happening in our world, so what's the point in pretending that it is, especially if in so doing you fail to explore the full range of story possibilities you can get out of the concept?

The Stargate becoming public knowledge was supposed to be the plot of a third SG-1 DVD movie, which didn't get made due to MGM's financial problems. Actually, it was surprising how hard the franchise avoided any depiction of the Stargate becoming public. In the fourteen years the franchise was on, there was only two episodes which dealt with the matter, one was an alternate future from SG-1's fourth season, the other an alternate reality from SG-1's final season.

I think it's inevitable that it would have to go public at some point, things were just getting way to big for them to be able to cover it up forever.

I'd be curious if the next Stargate series (knock on wood) refers to the events of the two unproduced films (Revolution and Extinction). It would be interesting to see them going forward with the idea that those events still happened even if we never saw them onscreen.

Will SG-1 be part of the US Space Force now?
Probably. IIRC, later seasons made it clear that they were under the auspices of Space Command with logos and things, and the Space Force is basically just Space Command with new stationary. Or, if those series takes place after the program was made public, in their version of history, it’s likely the Space Force would be what Homeworld Security/Command was renamed after it was stopped being secret and enough time had passed that no one was amused by the “Department of Homeworld Security” joke anymore. Unless authority was transferred to the UN by way of the IOA, in which case they’d probably be set up more like NATO or the UN, especially if Atlantis remained on Earth (or the moon) and superseded the SGC as Earth’s stargate.

Hopefully not. It's bad enough SGU's final season danced around those movies as though they were a thing in the crossover episodes they did, this new revival should just ignore them.

If anything the SGC and Earth's fleet of starships would make a far more plausible for creating a separate space based branch of the US military than the reasons it was done in the real world.

It's been awhile, so refresh my memory...but is there a single, worldwide agency responsible for Earth's space fleet as a whole? Or is it (as I suspect) up to each individual nation to build and maintain its own fleet?

You can still have secrets to explore...the moonbase idea can serve as an starting point, with the huge lava caves hiding something far older than anything yet encountered.

If I were to do a reboot of A Space Odyssey, it would be set in 2101 and feature less of a human outpost on the surface—the wow factor coming from a night world...Carcosa in stone.

That's the opposite kind of secret, though -- a mystery that the heroes are trying to uncover, rather than a secret the heroes are hiding from the public or from their friends and loved ones. The former is a search for truth, the latter is an ongoing exercise in deception. I know which side I prefer the good guys to be on.

So for a hypothetical new series. What type of team members would you write/create?

I think a female lead would be interesting. It's about time too. We've already had 4 main leads as males. Time for a woman to spout all the one-liners

How about a replicator human on the team to serve as the token alien/outsider like Teal'c or Teyla? I bet that would cause alot of tension

Under the US it’s under Department of Homeworld Defense and they have agreements with Russia, China, England and Germany Fie resource and intel sharing.

I hope they don’t bring back replicators again. They did them to death in SG1 and definitively destroyed them.

For team I don’t care what demographics they go with in terms of actors. I’d like to see a totally new team of people who just now learned the Stargate exists so everything is new to them.

One idea I might have for a gimmick character. Maybe they found a medical procedure to reverse the corruption of the sarcophagus for gu’ald, and have a repentant gu’ald on the team.

Also I hope we finally meet the furlings.

All the ships are American built and leased out to non-American nations. And while the individual nations get to operate their ships as part of their military, they are still at the beck and call of the IOA.
