Waves to Paramount/CBS

I have the perfect idea for a new Star Trek series. Are your ready for it?

Star Trek: Capoeira

Confirmed by what?

Lol - I think he was being facetious - i.e. the studio ISN'T smart...

Yeah, there's also the fact that I predicted on this board that the next new Trek production was almost certainly years away - about two weeks before the Abrams Trek project was announced.

Hey at least you admit it. :rommie: I'll say now what I said then: do not underestimate the power of GREED in motivating these decisions. Somebody, somewhere is thinking a Trek TV series is a no-brainer. The TV show will happen like the movie did - sooner than yall think.

Hollywood is rebooting BSG after RDM already rebooted it, and BSG never been a big brand name (no, not now either). If they'll pull nonsense like that, what's stopping a Trek series?

WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT IT!!!

No, really... don't. They're watching us.

So what? :rommie:

I think there's an important fact that's been missed here in this discussion.

Paramount and CBS are two separate companies now and when they split, the Trek franchise was divvied up between them. Paramount has the rights to Trek as a feature film property, CBS has the rights to it as a television property. That adds some interesting twists to any discussion about a potential new television series.

On the one hand, if CBS wanted to do a television series directly based on the J.J. Abrams film, they couldn't do so without securing permission from Paramount. I'm sure Paramount would be none too keen on allowing CBS to dilute the market right now when they've just had the first trip to what could be an extremely profitable well for them. And even if they were willing to license the rights to CBS, they'd probably demand a pretty penny for doing so.

But, on the other hand, if CBS wanted to introduce a new Trek series that was NOT connected to the J.J. Abrams version of Trek, there's nothing Paramount could do to stop them. CBS could easily try to take advantage of Trek's resurgence by either setting a new series in the "prime" universe or by doing a reboot of their own. And, let's face it, networks and studios are well known for quickly trying to copycat a success and cash in on it. Usually with dismal results I might add.

So I don't know. A new series is certainly possible. If Abrams manages to turn out a second movie that is as successful -- or moreso -- than the first, that will have to be an indication to the people in the industry that this year's film was not just a fluke and that Star Trek can once again be a huge mainstream success. And if that's the case, we just might see something we haven't seen since TOS: a new Trek series developed for one of the major networks. Whether that would ultimately be good or bad for Trek creatively, I have no idea.

I'd love to see another series, but my concern is who are the producers and writers?
No more Rick Berman....PLEASE, I can't go through another "Enterprise"!!!

And dear God, don't say they're gonna redux Battlestar Galactica again. I'm still reeling with pain from the Moore re-image. Starbuck is always gonna be a guy, for heaven's sake!

^ I'd say Rick Berman is pretty definitively out of the Star Trek business for good, since I imagine TPTB blame him for the decline of the franchise.

Now, I suppose it's possible that they might bring in a former writer or producer like Ron Moore or Ira Steven Behr. But I think it's more likely that if there ever is a new series, it will be given to someone brand new, given the success that has been seen by passing the baton to J.J. Abrams and his team.

As for me I wouldn't mind seeing another series on tv. I just hope they don't base it around DS9, because to me that show was boring. That is the only show of all the series, that I didn't care for. All the other shows were really good and kept you intrested in the show. DS9 to me seem more like a soap opera than Star Trek, so please no more DS9 type shows! If the shows is more like TNG,Voy era I'll be happy with it. Of course I would also love to see a show in the era of Ent. and TOS era as well. If they based the shows around those shows (as long its not DS9 type) I'll be happy with it. I think it would be really cool if the make a show based of the new movie with the new timeline. Of course they would have to have the same actors thats in the new movie to play the same charcters. I thought they did amazing job in the movie, and anybody else who played those charcters just wouldnt fit the part if you know what I mean. These actors and the orginals who orginaly played those charcters were/are the best and nobody else could pull it off like they did. Anyways, right now I'm just happy with these next set movies to go along with this one. I can't wait for the next one to come out! Anyways, we just have to wait and see what happens. You never know what the future holds, anything is possable.

Phlox M.D. is coming in september! Watch for it.

I couldn't disagree more. DS9 is the most original of the newer TREKs. How many "ships in space" stories can really be done. You have AMPLE enough episodes of that tired formula to work with and view over and over. My wife only likes DS9 because of its soap opera style. And attracting more female fans would help TREK. Not only in numbers, but help in creating new potential fans (babies).

I think I created the perfect new original premise for another star Trek series in the future of star Trek section's letter to Moonves. Check it out and ditto me if you like it. It doesn't interfere with J.J.'s supposedly original universe at all. I wish it was more TOS but..

I would just like to see a Post Nemesis show, there's plenty lft over to deal with, Cardassia, dealing with he Dominion after peace. It's like getting Lucas to do anything with Star Wars that is post ROTJ , he wants to stay stuck in one time frame. And I have to disagree with the DS9 hate. It was a great platform for stories. Ya had a station that had plenty of new people to come in and not just disappear the next episode like on the ship based series, they had a ship on their own so we could get the occasional ship based story.

The only way I could see them doing anything post Nemesis would be a direct-to-dvd release. But a series that takes place in the old universe would be too confusing and Paramount is well aware of our ADD challenged society.

This is what I'd been interested in as well.

However, I don't think it would work out due to Robert's reasoning. I'm actually kind of unsure of how a new series would work and what type of market they'd like to appeal to. I wouldn't be interested in a series based off the mirror universe from the films at all, nor would I be interested in a series like Enterprise I prefer the series with all the familiar technological advancements like in TNG,DS9, VOY.

I'd want them to go in a new direction a new concept, something set in maybe the 25th century? Perhaps, they could find a new place to travel, or something that could create a whole new storyline and conflict for the Federation or perhaps the galaxy itself. My problem though is does Star Trek still have the audience it had back in the 80's & 90's who would be interested in watching again? TV has changed a lot in the last decade and I'm not sure if the appeal is still there for just general watchers. I know the Trek fans will always be willing and interested, but is that enough? People also like familiarity so that makes me think some brand new idea wouldn't work. -Sigh- so frustrating!

Ya know at this point, I'd accept that, I mean I don't hate the new movie, it wasn't too bad but there's just so much more to continue with post Nemesis, to be honest I'd even be up for bringing back Enterprise, I just believe that Prime Universe >>>>>>>>>>> Abrams Universe.

Yes ma'am, DS9, Voyager and Nemesis left us with plenty of things left over and even if we have to accept the destruction of Romulus, then that in it's own could be something we see them dealing with for the whole series occasionally.

I want to know if anyone has heard of a new star trek series coming out in either 2009 or 2010. I really am anxious to see some new star trek and I just hope a new series is under construction. What have you guys heard?

Dude... We only have two weeks of 2009 left. It would be all over TV and the TV magazines, like the cast on a special edition of TV Guide, if it will come out in the next two weeks.

Perhaps the question that should be asked is "Is CBS even interested in doing another Star Trek series?" The current regime there could be perfectly content to allow Paramount to keep making movies and repackaging DVD sets of the existing five shows indefinitely because they get paid either way without having to invest really anything...

I doubt there has even been a serious discussion about a new series. The movie did so well I'm sure Paramount wants to ride that wave and do another, or maybe two more movies before they even think about a new show. Frankly I'm ok with that.

That's just it, though. Paramount controls the movies. CBS controls the TV shows.

It's no longer cut and dry, everything under one roof. The house is divided upon itself.

I read in a magazine that they were thinking of bringing back voyager as they return to the delta quadrant and a new series with a new ship with the new drive.
