New show advice

Not bad writing. Strong violence. Not my cup of tea at all, but I could tell it was well written and made.

I've decided to start with The 4400. My cousin can't say enough good things about it, and still complains about the cliffhanger ending.

Ahem. You might want to mention a certain novel, THE 4400: WELCOME TO PROMISE CITY, that picks up where that cliffhanger left off . . . .

Modesty forbids me to mention the author. :)

It's less gory than just very disturbing and depraved. The writing can be sketchy and sometimes just absurd (they really stretch to maintain the awfulness and keep ratcheting it up, by the latter seasons they're verging on unintentional comedy) but the acting is superb.

Another show in that vein is Deadwood. Depraved, disturbing content; consistently strong writing (even though the plotlines get a bit unfocused and having been cancelled, the story ends too abruptly); consistently strong acting.

Threshold (Braga version)

I liked it. 7/10.

Never seen it.

9/10 until the last season then 6/10. I didn't like how it ended but this seems to be very personal and people have different takes on it. It was a fun ride anyway.

The West Wing
Never seen it but want to.

One of the best first seasons of any TV show, then gets a lot worse. Stopped watching around season 4. I think the first season is very worthwhile though, it basically tells a complete story.
