New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 2017

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Well, a 3 month old comment on a news article written over a year ago.

You're probably right. I doubt CBS will invest anything into this thing they're going to be promoting heavily.

I have no doubt that CBS will invest more in this -- especially if they are able to add NFL Football to it like they want to. It will require a higher quality service to meet the higher demand and will also lead to a higher price for consumers. The $6 people talk about being such a great deal might not even last until 2017. The Hollywood Reporter article said they've been talking about $9.99 subscriptions without ads for what they currently offer which is just reruns and recent episodes of current shows. They've also already said the price will go up when they add football like they want to do and that in addition to Star Trek they want other original online only content for the service. So if everything falls for CBS the way they want we could be looking at $10-15 a month for this service and that could be with ads if they decide they can charge that much because NFL fans will pay it.

Honestly NFL plus star trek, would actually get alot of people on board.

Also the timing would be great, as the end of star trek season would be only a few weeks before the start of the nfl pre season.

EDIT: I meant I'd personally have an interest, this would not be reflected by much of the audience at all.

The Mos Eisley Cantina Band playing "Are You Ready For Some Warp Drive?" as the football players are announced and come running through the fog of a simulated warp core breach, with Orion Slave Girls and Rizan HunkMen Cheerleaders undulating to Quark's "Holo-Suite" Suite.

Then, a holographic 1701-D Saucer Section "flies" right over and "crashes" into the Visiting Team bleacher seats.

A Holographic Millennium Falcon follows, does that angled-360 thing it does over the stadium, and lands. Han and Chewwie actors come out, silhouetted by the fog and landing smoke...over the intercom we hear Han's voice say "Chewwie, we're home!" Chewwie howls back in delight.

The Transmission Booth: set dressed like Jabba's lair, functionaries and droids everywhere

John Madden at the OkudaPrompter
Darth Vader at Replay
George Takei, play-by-play (that voice!)
Data as Analyst
And the one and only Shatner for Color.

Each game they bring a Star Trek/Star Wars vet into the booth for Amusing Anecdotes and secret hitherto unknownness, between the action.

Madden in a Dress Admiral's Uniform
Darth dressed as...well, yeah, Darth!
Takei in Captain's Dress Golds
Data dressed as Sherlock Holmes, pipe included
Shat in his Denny Crane suit, whiskey and cigar clearly visible as he give his color commentary

Half-Time shows:

Nichelle singing and dancing
Simulated Storm Trooper/Rebel Alliance battles at the 50
Winners of "Voice and Mannerism" contests showing their winning entries
Enterprise and Falcon Model-Making Contests for the kiddies!
Fanwank Bridge Scene re-enactments with winners of Gagh-eating contests
Dress-up Night - wear your favorite star's costume and make-up
Tribute Nights

Simulcasted in Klingon and Empirical Code, of course!

CBS and Disney will make a fortune!

First Scene Act One:
Bridge of the USS ENTERPRISE NCC1701-E
Q appears out of a flash of light.
"Moi capitane, did you miss me?" Q stops and looks around. He spots a completely different brige set and focuses on a captain, he doesn't recognise. "Who are YOU? Where is Captain Picard?"
The stranger in the Captains Uniform looks confused, as all the bystanders on the bridge. "How did you get on my ship, and who - WHAT are you? And who is this Captain Picard?"
Q starts to stretch his mind. He feels into the fibers of reality. "Ah. I see. There was a change in the timeline! Picard never was born..." He looks up. "Time to set things right!" He lifts his hand, snaps with his fingers and...

Now you can fill in anything you like this new Star Trek Show to be.

Q Rules!!!

I just realized that regardless what timeline/universe they decide to go with for the new Star Trek, there is always a chance that Q can be in it.

Star Trek will not run from January to August.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Yep. 13 episodes released weekly would be April at the latest. And if they're all available at once most people will be done with the show before the Superbowl in February.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I really hope they're released on a weekly basis. I love the "event hour" aspect of my favorite TV shows, old-fashioned though that may be. It seems like a poor decision to release them all at once if this is one of the channel's first original shows, too. Netflix has started doing it, but Netflix has a far larger backbone.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

You should see Star Wars fans. We're all the same. :)

Blasphemy! ;) Actually, do they complain that J.J. is going to make Star Wars too much Like Star Trek? That would be hilarious.

That would be catastrophic if it happened, but hilarious if they claimed that that happened after the release.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

But these squeeky wheels aren't on the cart. We're just wheels sitting on the side of the road watching the cart go by.

You are, if that's how you see your role.

Mr Awe

Unless you're working in the production office, that's where you are too. A bystander with no input in to what direction the show will take.

Your only power is to not watch the show and deny them the revenue. Have fun with that.

Not sure why you're taking frustrations out on me.

I'm just responding to others. I don't have any strong opinions about this new series.

Mr Awe

What frustrations? I'm just trying to inform you that if you think you have any real input into the final product we get then you're mistaken.

You sound rather pessimistic here. Thanks for taking it upon yourself to inform me though.

You seem frustrated because you feel the need to randomly inform people about things. I hope you feel better soon.

I think you're mistaking the word "pessimistic" for "realistic".

I didn't realize that informing you counted as "random people"? Do you have multiple personality disorder? Maybe that's why you feel the need to sign your posts "Mr. Awe" even though the forum software has our name up there on the left of each post we make?

Re: quality from CBSAA

CBS will offer all 6 trek series, available on demand for 6 bucks a month, not really a bad deal considering.

CBS All Access has
Lower video quality then Netflix/Amazon/Google Play.
- Frequent stops due to low server bandwidth, especially in the evenings.
- Skipping on the timeline causes commercials to play, in addition to the predefined spots where commercials are already shown anyway.
- Very Low audio quality
- Dolby not supported

Not great compared to others.

14 months to upgrade it.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — CBS is contemplating offering its online service CBS All Access free of ads for $10 a month, a $4 surcharge that matches what online video service Hulu charges for stripping out commercials.
CEO Les Moonves told analysts Tuesday "it's a very possible thing for the future" to charge $9.99 for an ad-free version of the service. His statement, following the release of the company's quarterly earnings, came just a day after CBS announced it would run a new "Star Trek" series exclusively on the online platform in 2017.
Moonves said CBS All Access had its largest subscriber growth yet in September, helped by new shows, without specifying further. He called the service "a major priority" as young people's viewing habits increasingly shift to mobile devices and away from appointment viewing.

It’s not the same thing as going straight to VHS, really. CBS’s streaming platform is the best of all the networks. For $5.99 a month, if you don’t have a cable subscription and live in one of the 110 markets, you can stream live CBS all day. You can have the news, bad sick-day daytime television and Stephen Colbert, just like a regular cable customer.

$10 a month for what they currently offer is a joke.

Thus far, I can live with this.

Yep. 13 episodes released weekly would be April at the latest. And if they're all available at once most people will be done with the show before the Superbowl in February.

Which also means that all the panic over spending $72 per season is unfounded. At most it would be $24 if you only subscribed for the months the series is airing. So you could spend $60 for a season of TNG-R and watch episodes you've seen many times before, or spend $24 and get a season of brand new Star Trek.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Fan films happen for so many reasons that saying we get them because of a void, is rather limiting. Fan films, regardless of genre or franchise, have existed since film cameras were accessible to the greater public.

CBS now has more impetus to consider cracking down on fan films as, when their new series comes out, they will have a stake in the profits that could potentially be lost. That's a greater question to be asking.

However, fan films will continue on, crowd funded or not, as fans attempt to put their own stamp on a franchise, just like other fan art and fiction. The idea that C&D from CBS will stop the practice is not quite accurate due to the reasons fan films are made in the first place.
Fan fiction didn't stop when the pro novels started coming out regularly. In fact, the fanfiction site linked in my sig consists of a fan version of Star Trek that's been going on for over 30 years (obviously it began in the print 'zines). There are tens of thousands of Star Trek stories on fanfiction.net, and that's just one site. There are many others.

Some copyright holders have forbidden fan interpretations of their work. For instance, Marion Zimmer Bradley's estate forbids publication of Darkover fanfiction (this was not always so; long story). But that doesn't mean it's not out there - you just either have to find the stuff that was published before the restriction came down, or else ignore the directive that ordered anyone who had written any Darkover fanfiction to either destroy it or rewrite it so it was no longer recognizable as Darkover fanfic. Obviously most of us thumbed our noses at that... I'm not going to destroy a story I wrote that's never been published and that I wrote strictly for my own enjoyment and never did intend to show anyone else. I should think it would be the same if CBS decided to crack down on Star Trek fanfiction. There are literally millions of stories, poems, and pieces of fan art out there and it's impossible to stop it.

They might consider doing that with fan films, though, as those are getting good enough to offer real competition for fans' attention. I know I prefer Star Trek Continues, and even Phase II/New Voyages fan films to Abramstrek, and Red Shirt Diaries is a hoot. I'd hate to see those prohibited by CBS, especially if this new Star Trek project fizzles.

For Canadian fans, rumour going is around that Crave TV (Bell's online streaming service) will likely be providing the show to Canadians as Crave TV has the rights to all of Star Trek's TV library (Netflix Canada currently has TNG but my understanding is those rights end next year).
I've had a Netflix subscription for a long time, but never bothered watching TNG. There might be a dozen episodes that I like enough to rewatch them, so I don't really think about it.

The customer service guy talked me into a trial subscription to Crave awhile ago, so I'll check it out. But except for binge watching some favorites and keeping up with my soap and a handful of shows either on CBS or Netflix, I don't watch anywhere close to as much TV as I used to. There was a time some years ago when I didn't have a TV, so I just got out of the habit... and never really went back much. As long as I get my soap, whichever CBS reality show that's on, and the stuff I like from Netflix (repeat Downton Abbey bingewatcher here ;)), I'm okay.

If this has anything to do with the Abramsverse in any way whatsoever, I will not watch it.

If it's a completely new universe, I'd give it a chance... if I could access it.
I don't understand why you wouldn't even give it a chance. I understand that you don't like the new movies, and that's fine, but the new show could still be set in the same universe and have a completely different tone than the movies.

Also, you're in Canada, aren't you? It's only going to be streaming in the US. Chances are one of our channels like Space will carry it.
Okay, I would give it a chance. One chance, maybe two, given that the first episode often isn't the best representative of a show. But it would have to be damn good, with stories that make sense, people who can actually act, and not be a sitcom with starships and phasers.

I know I'm stubborn about this. But I tend to prefer the original/classic versions of TV shows and movies anyway. There are some Classic Doctor Who stories that I've seen easily a dozen times and would watch a dozen more times with no hesitation. But my tolerance for anything Matt Smith and beyond is once. Maybe twice, if it's a Christmas/Boxing Day marathon and I'm not in the mood to read. And there are some parts of the Smith era that you'd have to pay me to rewatch.

As for Abramstrek... well, I saw the first movie on the Space Channel, and the second when I redeemed an On Demand coupon from my cable company. I forced myself to watch that thing 3 times during the 48 hours I had access to it, and it didn't really improve on subsequent viewings.

So this new series would have to have none of the things I hate about the movies, which is a rather tall order.

Yes, I'm in Canada, but I don't get the Space Channel. It costs extra for me, and I don't watch enough TV these days (or at least not enough SF) to make it worth my while. Also, the only way to get it is to also have to take a bunch of other channels I never watch. I subscribed last year for Doctor Who and last year's Who was godawful. Wouldn't you know, this year it's not too bad - the best year since David Tennant left, in my opinion. And naturally I wasn't expecting much improvement over last year so I didn't bother subscribing. But since there's a site where I can watch it online for free, I'm not missing out.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Their currently library ad-free. And I guess you can stream CBS live which people without cable can already do with an antenna without paying $10 a month. I see no guarantees that the price will be the same when they add new content.
