New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 2017

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I think it's important to remember that this news is not such a big deal outside Trek fandom. So it's extremely unlikely CBS will be relying on Trek to anchor their online service. They probably have a roster of new shows in different genres to wheel out over the next couple of years, enough to make the package as a whole attractive. I suspect they will also rebrand and change the name to something less clunky than CBS All Access.

CBS would be foolish not to take advantage of Beyond's release next year, to ride the buzz and release cool preliminary images from the series. Perhaps in the lead-up to the premiere they might also make all Trek content free for a limited period?

I know it's an old topic, but I'm really hoping there won't be any forehead aliens. In the last year I've been watching more British sci-fi, mainly Doctor Who and Primeval, and seeing the creatures they did (I admit with varying degrees of success) and then comparing them with what Star Trek typically does it's kind of sad.

Forehead aliens are VERY unlikely. ENT had very few (I only recall the Klingons). Most of their makeups were much more advanced. There was also good use of CGI (Xindi insectoids) and CG enhancement (Shran's antennae). And that was years ago.

Edit: oh and I hope this is not sold to channel 9 in Australia as they have a history of airing ST at midnight.

I am hoping for SBS 2. :D

(They have had Walking Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, and 12 Monkeys, among others, so not that much of a stretch.)

Re: New Series Official Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins Januar

The exclusive streaming thing seems more like an attempt to draw attention to their service now to try to build an audience on the platform. If it fails to take off by the time the show premieres I am very doubtful they'll hold to that plan.

They did kind of the same thing with Star Trek Voyager, having the pilot episode basically launch the debut of UPN. Didn't work too well, but it's an old idea.

I'm not surprised CBS is doing the streaming thing, though. They are EXTREMELY risk averse, and a streaming service is a pretty reliable business model with relatively few variables they can't directly control. Popularity and exclusivity of content is one of them.

Vulcan nerve pinch, of course.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I'm really excited to get some Trek back on TV. I've enjoyed the movies but two to two-and-a-half hours every three or four years just isn't quite scratching the itch for me.

For my part, I'd like to see Kurtzman's series continue on in the prime universe, while acknowledging that Romulus is gone. I'd really love to see the political ramifications of that event. Either jump ahead into the 25th century or set it in...2394? I think that's what year it would be if they stuck with the 1:1 time advancement the Berman era followed.

Part of the reason why I'd like them to return to the prime universe is also because I'd like the new series to be set on an Enterprise again, and I think it would be less awkward doing it there than trying to establish a new Enterprise in the Abramsverse. If they go prime universe, I think it'd be cool if the new hero ship (whatever its name turns out to be) has a quantum slipstream drive--or transwarp, whatever--making it possible to truly explore the galaxy instead of just the small part of it we're used to seeing.

Seriously though, I agree, forehead aliens alone don't cut it anymore. We need more species 8472s.

More CGI? No thanks.

As for the characters, I hope they're more like those on DS9 (well developed and relatable) than those on TNG (roles).

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I really hope it follows the original timeline and not the JJ Abrams timeline. Keep that side separate for the movies and follow on from the Dominion War imo. If it follows along the same timeline as the new films, I won't bother watching it.

I might be being very small time here, but I'd want to see places like Betazed make a reappearance. To show how these places have recovered after being annexed by the Dominion in DS9.

I am also hoping it will be a prime universe series, but I am not sure if will happen. Its sad to think Picard, Sisko and Janeway doesn't yet exist.

With Alex Kurtzman as executive producer, its more likely to be set in abramsverse. Also I remember CBS and Cryptic Studios (makers of Star Trek Online) have some kind of agreement that gives Cryptic creative control of the prime universe after the events of DS9 & Voyager. Of course, I am sure CBS will rescind its agreement with Cryptic if Alex really wants to play with the prime universe.

Yes, I think the series will be set in the Abramsverse but it may have some differences in terms of style and look. I am sure Kurtzman has his own ideas that he will want to imprint on the show.

Seems like this is gonna be a dumb down version of voyager.

Anyone else?

Considering we have 0 information so far I'd say this statement is completely pointless.

No. If anything, the short description we have so far makes the show sound more like TOS or TNG, with its focus on social commentary and meeting strange new worlds. I'm expecting the series to be a 21st century version of TNG.

Wonder if Jonathan Frakes would be on board for directing any episodes. He's still directing TV....isn't he?

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

They really need to shoot it in 4K. 8K might be a bit much but I need content for my new 4K tv!

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

^Ha! I just saw an ad for 4k content and I was just thinking the same thing. :)

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

One big issue is that this new Trek is US only. That means there will be a lot of downloading of the show by people outside the US. I also think this is a really bad idea to use Trek to blackmail people to pay for CBS All Access.

It isn't US only... It will only be available on CBS all access in the US... It will be available in other markets on more conventional means if someone wants to buy and air it...

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

That to me says US only.

You need to keep reading the press release. From later in the same story.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I am two minds about this news.

On the one hand, I am overjoyed, thrilled and curious about what form this new journey will take.

On the other hand, I am disheartened, depressed and thoroughly annoyed by the entitled whining and general air of complaint and second-guessing coming from fandom. Sure, TNG had similar naysayings, but I think social media has just magnified for me how hateful so many fans can be.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

For Canadian fans, rumour going is around that Crave TV (Bell's online streaming service) will likely be providing the show to Canadians as Crave TV has the rights to all of Star Trek's TV library (Netflix Canada currently has TNG but my understanding is those rights end next year).
