Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201
Zero information? we have a name, and proven track record that the name is attached to. I'm not sure how on earth you can conclude that is zero information, that seems like quite a big parcel of information. Consindering the history that trek has had with different production staff causing issues with the overall product I'm not sure how a guy who was associated with kevin sorbo hercules isn't a liability?
David Eck (Producer of SciFi's BSG) was associated with Kevin Sorbo's Hercules, as was Sam Raimi. Meanwhile, Kurtzman has been tied to a NUMBER of successful shows, (Yes Hercules was one of them) and is currently EP of three successful shows on CBS right now. Given his history with the Star Trek Franchise, Kurtzman is actually seems to be the best choice.
He's not just a name, he's the main guy associated with the project who will no doubt have a huge influence on everything that follows.
Do you think a name like that gets associated with such project without him having a direct input on the steps that come next?
Yup, he is going to have input, that's what EP's do, have input. Most likely he will not be show runner though, as he has alot going on, and show runner is typically a full time gig. But again, given his experience in Genre shows (Hercules, Fringe, Alias) that's a good thing.
This makes absolutely no sense, again we know exactly what happens when a series is launched as the flag ship product. It has to appeal to all demographics, unless CBS has decided that magically it's online service is gonna be a complete u turn from its cable service which seems highly unlikely and financially nonsensical.
Actually we don't know what happens... CBS is the first studio to launch their own subscription based internet service. Comparing UPN to All Access is like comparing an apple to a Buick. Yes, Voyager was the flagship for UPN, and that didn't necessarily go as well as Paramount would have wanted, BUT Voyager was the highest rated thing on UPN for most of it's run. So UPN didn't fail because of Voyager, UPN failed because of a lack of other programming.
The same may be true here, or it may not. in this case,CBS will offer all 6 trek series, available on demand for 6 bucks a month, not really a bad deal considering.
And while I don't think All Access will necessarily just be Star Trek, it's certainly the right brand to jump start a new streaming service, given the success of Star Trek in the streaming space.
