Spoilers New season 3 badges

It's sadly not much of a better view, maybe marginally so. The person wearing it is still way too off-angle to get a good head-on look at it, but yeah, it definitely looks like the rank indicator is the set of lines on the right side of it. This is TOS-era, not TNG (currently set in the far future notwithstanding) - I really miss the cuff braid.
Same here. The cuff braid definitely added some measure of character that, in my opinion, the TNG uniforms never had.

As for the badges themselves, I look forward to seeing them in the show. Be curious to see them in action.

Yes, I definitely want to see what that device looks like close-up. I wonder why the change - a psychological "fresh start", as it were, for the crew in a new time-frame, perhaps? It was probably a good idea, in the beginning, up until they discovered that...
the Federation had collapsed years prior to their arrival

As best I can work out from the limited views so far, it looks we're going to be getting something that looks like this:

This certainly won't be exactly correct, but it's the closest I can get, based on the details that I can see in the two images we've seen so far.

The main badge ia a simplified version of the Starfleet delta with the inset cut-out, as originated for Discovery and continued in several Starfleet logos in the later Picard era. The badge is overlaid on an elliptical backing (long-axis oriented vertically) and the cut-out is debossed below the surface of the rest of the delta.

I can't see from these images if the badges continue to have the Division emblems in the centre or if they are plain arrowheads, like the badges from TNG onwards. At the moment, I suspect there are no division insignia but it's very hard to tell from angles we've seen so far.

Rank indicators are likely the bars on the left as Burnham has three gold on a gold badge and Culber has two silver and one black on a silver badge, which would tie-up with their established ranks.

I'm not wildly taken with this design but it is what it is. We'll have to see if it's just change for change's sake or if it does actually tie into the story-arc somehow (such as being a later evolution of the Starfleet badge or something new the Disco crew have designed for themselves).

Yeah, I'm not really sure anyone can comment on it until we get a proper look at the thing. At the moment, I'm ambivalent, mostly because that's all I can be. So it's sort of oval shaped. Okay what else?

Ah, screw it, it's do this.
What the freaking hell is this shit? Some sort of oval shape is now their badge? Cannon Violation! Raped Childhood! Gene's Vision all up in flames! It's a good thing Kurtzman has been fired and this show cancelled, this is a travesty against humanity and is officially The Worst Thing to happen in 2020. Go ahead, find something worse. Just try to. Can't be done, an impossible task.

I'm only hatewatching the show from now on and only intend to hatewatch each episode a minimum of eight times.

;)

I don't hate it at all, how can you hate anything that bland and forgettable? It's just meh. There's no personality to it, unlike older combadges.
This is nonsense. The DS9/VOY combadge didn't exactly have "personality" if you want to look at it like that. It was what it was. The TNG combadge was okay. In 30 years of being a fan, I never really thought about it.

You're reaching. And everyone knows it.

Perhaps controversial opinion time but I feel the only real personality was with the TWOK uniforms and the various badges. The combadges just felt like there were just there. Certainly conspicuous in their absence but hardly having a personality. I always missed the TOS style assignment patches in later Trek.

I guess, for me, the thing that's most noticeable with these badges (or rather noticeable because it's not noticeable...) is the Starfleet arrowhead / delta symbol: it very much looks like it will be all but completely lost against the background ellipse when seen from anything other than pretty close-up or, just possibly, when seen from exactly the right angle for the light to catch the various polished and matt surfaces of the new badge

All the other variants have pretty much maintained and emphasised the primacy of the arrowhead emblem as the main feature of the badge, regardless of the shape or features of the background.

Again, there may be a specific plot point here... maybe they're deliberately trying to downplay the overt "Starfleet" look of the badge in response to whatever the new political reality is in the future they have entered; it may be that these actually are the Starfleet badges from that time period. We just won't know this for sure until season three plays-out.

So far, we have seen Burnham wearing what appears to be a gold badge on her blue/silver Sciences uniform and Culber and Pollard wearing silver badges on their white/silver Medical uniforms. I'd be curious to see if they choose to use the full range of gold / silver / copper badges to match the department / branch colours they have previously established for the Discovery-era uniforms.

To expand on my last sketch, here's a quick image to give some idea of what the broader range of badges *might* look like...

It seems like the area under the delta is dark compared to the rest of it and maybe a little longer of an oval.

You could well be right! :D
It certainly looks like a relatively tall, slim badge with a much longer vertical axis compared to the horizontal.

I've been compensating slightly for the fact that the only pics so far are from relatively oblique side angles, which will distort the true shape somewhat. I have a feeling that when we see them properly "face-on" the overall shape will have a slightly fuller width -- but it's all just extrapolation and guesswork at this stage.

Like the original Disco badges, they seem to have a mix of matt (or at least "satin") and polished surfaces. Looking again at the Burnham pic, I suspect that I have over-emphasised the 3D depth of the arrowhead relative to the background. Indeed, it may even be that the symbol is just etched surface on an otherwise plain, polished, slightly domed ellipse (and the same etching for the rank marks). Looking closely at Pollard's badge, there's just a hint of a protrusion beyond the rim of the ellipse, suggesting that end of the longer limb of the delta does indeed stand slightly proud of the edge of the background, whereas the views of Culber's and Burnham's badges (seen from the other side) have a smooth edge to the ellipse, suggesting that the short limb of the delta ends at or within the rim of the background.

We'll see...

It's a shiny oval.
