New Picard SDCC Trailer

Saying that something doesn't "feel like Star Trek" is a meaningless statement. If the show/movie has the words "Star Trek" in the title, then it's Star Trek regardless of how one feels about it.
Strangely, facts don't care about feelings. And you are quite accurate in these stateements

"Star Trek" doesn't always have to be about a StarFleet crew running a "StarShip" / "StarBase" and going on missions.

The words in the franchise name implies that as long as you're "Trekking amongst the Stars", you can have all sorts of journeys / adventures. Many expanded Star Trek novels allows that type of world building / journey / story telling.

Just like "Star Wars" implies some sort of War or War related story telling amongst the Stars, it has a very simple premise.

The premise of "Star Trek" is incredibly simple and leaves itself open to many forms of Story Telling IMO.

Even though I'm Team Disco, after today I think Team Picard would make good allies. Some of us might disagree about Discovery but I think if we can just accept where we stand "is what it is" and look passed it, we can work together pretty well in regards to Picard and in general. I can see this happening.

How about it?

1: I know but the tone of the trailer is just... Wrong? It doesn't look or feel like.Star Trek, looks just like Discovery and Into Darkness and the Expanse and all other grimdark SciFi of the past decade.

2: You can see the Kurtzman/Bad Robot all through the trailer especially in the last third. If this is anything like Discovery it's going to be a show where the story and direction is dictated between 20% the actual writers and 80% the 3 billion producers. Discovery had good SciFi writers on staff as well, didn't stop it from being a terribly written trainwreck in the exact same way everything that Kurtzman touches is.

Look I hope I'm wrong, but I predicted my red flags with the first teaser and they're basically all here, another dark modern mystery box action melodrama. Yawn.
1) That's your problem not the material. Felt like Trek to me.

2) Kurtzman (Bad Robot is not involved) is also called MODERN 21st century production quality.......Discovery is just fine and season 2 had some of the best writing in Trek. It had a few problems but so has EVERY other Trek if you can take of your rose colored glasses. Some of the details and call backs show that the writers know Trek way better than most fans do.

I think lots of people have a chip on their shoulder and no matter how good DSC or Picard is they are just going to make excuses of why it "isn't real Trek". Stick with your DVDs and fan films, I'll be enjoying the new offers.

Being a Picard show, having Patrick Stewart, Spiner, Jeri, etc will probably not make it any less divisive. A bunch of people will love it. A bunch will hate it. And we'll all argue about it for a few years

.

I've always felt like the latest installment gets the most grief, but when the succeeding series comes along, it takes all the heat off the previous one. although, I'm sure this series has a bit more good will going for it at this point.

I saw an interview where the actor who plays Hugh says hes not in the trailer and is still half borg.

I have to wonder if Tim Russ and the group behind Star Trek: Renegades (which was supposedly pitched years ago when they crowdfunded it), will raise any issues legally as the set up for this show is a lot like what they did. (Hell, Patrick Stewart says: They're not Starfleet...think of them as renegades.")

Yeah, DSC would like a break from being the franchise punching bag.

Hasn't happened yet ;)

Just wanna note that 5843 days without an assimilation works out to exactly 16 years. So that pretty much lets you know what likely happened:

Supernova destroys Romulus
A couple years later the Borg invade
Rescue armada battles the Borg

Picard is set in 2399. Romulan sun exploded in 2387.

DISCO & this Picard show are not in the Kelvin timeline, but they are made under the same alternative licence that the Kelvin series of movies were made under

The so called 'Prime Universe' is not the original Star Trek continuity - it's an universe where things mostly match the events of the original continuity

Whilst this timeline might have the same rough chain of events there have to be differences - a minimum 15% difference I believe - so Seven's implants being different - the Borg cube having blue rather than green light, the DISCO Enterprise being larger than TOS all these things are different for contractual reasons

Discovery & Picard are made for CBS, yes, but they are made by Secret Hideout under the same alternative licence as Bad Robot made the Kelvin movies

However I think the Picard series will walk the line as close as it possibly can - and by the time it airs the CBS/Viacom re-merger might have gone through and it might not be an issue anymore. Picard at that point could then be potentially subsumed into the original continuity. Perhaps the same will be true of Discovery from Series 3 onwards post time jump

Why do people still insist on this 15% 25% nonsense.

TOS
TNG
DS9
VOY
DIS
Picard

Edit: adding ENT too

Are all in the same timeline/universe.

The phasers being used by the police type people in that scene sounded weird. Like Dominion phasers or some shit? Not Federation. I've heard those phasers before, but I think they were a different type or something?

Yeah I thought this, and couldn’t place exactly where I heard them before.

Except that there are one and a half stations where TOS had only one.

Because they made the ship bigger than it should be.

There's no in-story reason why it needed to be bigger, but it is. Why then if not for contractual reasons?

Having made it bigger they then had to make the bridge bigger, yet try and make it look quasi-similar. So they ended up with consoles that no one person could opperate alone, then having to shove an extra person in at each side station.

It's awkward, but they kind of got away with it for the limited screen time it got

Just stop. There is no contractual reason for them to be different. It’s just how they were designed for the relevant episode/movie.

I would think that CBS can steal Tim Russ’s idea and Tim Russ wouldn’t be able to do jack about it because Tim Russ made a fan film based on CBS’s intellectual property.

In a way, the fan films/series were filling a void that CBS is now trying to capitalize on with all access.

Not the way you were suggesting.

Unless you work for CBS, Bad Robot or Secret Hideout, my speculation is as good as your speculation. Stop telling people they're straight out wrong, because you have no more idea than any of the rest of us. Plus, it's killing the fun vibe.

Yeah, I can't see how anyone would believe there's no digital work at play there. Slap the make-up on him, pull and tighten some areas, give him a wig...and then do digital tweaks on top of all that. And hopefully a lot more of them before final release. ;)

That's for sure. It turns up in sit-coms, that's how ubiquitous it is. :)

What sitcoms have used this kinda tech?
