New Making of TMP book

I couldn't stand it any longer and so I called their office yesterday and was told that the books are on a slow boat from Taiwan and they don't know how long it will be before the books ship. It could be a week or months from now. He said as soon as they have something more definite they will update the website.

Honestly, they should update the site period. Their site clearly says late October, and we're now officially in November. They should at least communicate honestly and openly with their customers about it. I'm in no rush, but a lack of communication annoys me.

Too much shit is produced, printed, laboured over overseas. I know it's cheaper but it's fucking up North America. I hate it. Agree, though that in this case a simple email would be a good move. Sure wish though, that someone in the U.S. or Canada could have printed this book at something that could be considered a fair price.

Oh come on... in this day and age they don't know how long a ship takes to cross the Pacific? It's not like they're under sail and at the whim of the winds, for Pete's sake.

They've apparently updated their site to say they will be shipping sometime in November.

That's ok with me. I'm dying to read the book, or at least have it, but what are you going to do?

At least they're communicating with their customers. As long as those of us that paid are kept in the loop as to what's going on without having to start "banging on doors", I'm ok.

I'm okay being patient. I'm okay with having to pay for this months in advance. I'm a little iffy about a company that can't send a mass email out to all who ordered a late book but I'll deal with it. I just want to know -- Did I get in early enough to get an autographed copy? :p

At least they finally updated their website. They should have done this a week ago or more.

UPDATE: The finished books are en route by sea freight from the printer in Hong Kong, and are due to arrive at our warehouse in Los Angeles in mid-to-late November (pending weather and clearance thru customs). Based on the high volume of pre-ordered copies, please allow 1–2 weeks for us to process all of the orders, including the first 100 signed editions.

All orders will be shipped by USPS in the order they were received, so look for delivery shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, and closer to Christmas for overseas orders.

I wonder why they were not able to get them printed in the US or Canada? Surely there have got to be printers in North America that could've done them just as cheaply as Hong Kong printer.

In NA you have to pay workers a living wage, but China has no such restrictions. This makes it hard to compete with them. This is a place where there are kids sewing together soccer balls with their teeth for a few cents a day. Hard to make things as cheap or cheaper when your workforce is willing to work under those conditions. Of course, I've always heard that Hong Kong is different than the rest of mainland China, so my point may be moot..

I'm also not sure if the labor situation in China is really relevant to printing. I can't imagine that labor is a significant percentage of cost when it comes to a printing company.

While I took this photo last month, I only asked Creature Features today if I could share it. This is the finished book. The rest are on their way over and should be here any day now (according to CF).

For the Life of me, I cannot understand (Given Limited Run and Printing Costs, not to mention shipping from Hong Kong and the resultant delays) why this book was not distributed Digitally. A project like this seemingly SCREAMS to be done in that format, and you could still charge the same price.....

Well, I wouldn't have bought it.

Why charge the same price? The costs of printing and distribution would be negligible!

Consider the target audience for a book on ST:TMP, though -- mostly people old enough to have been around in 1979. It certainly feels appropriate to me, as a member of that target audience, to have this book in print form.

But that's a small part of the cost of creating a book. Most of the cost is labor, the person-hours invested by the writer, editor, copyeditors, proofreaders, typesetters, designers, cover artist, etc. After all, you're not paying for the paper, since you could buy a ream of paper for a few bucks. You're paying for the content. And the content is the same in either medium. So the cost in electronic form might be a little cheaper, but not immensely so.

Can you post pics of the spine and back too?

I gotta tell you, that's filling me with desire; I may have to order that.
