Spoilers New Kirk series (SNW spoilers)

With the casting of Paul Wesley as James Kirk, and the premiere of Strange New Worlds just weeks away, If they were to do a new Kirk-focused series, where would you want it to be set? Would you want set during the Fifth year of the original Five-year mission? post-TMP pre-TWOK? or would you want to be set during his academy years?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Depends on how they bring Kirk into SNW (which I'm not that excited about), but now that's happening I wouldn't seeing if Kirk commanded another starship before Enterprise. I think there's room there between his time on the Farragut and the Enterprise to explore with Kirk and a lot of new characters, though it would be neat to see more Gary Mitchell and perhaps even Will Decker. They could even bring Janice Lester and Carol Marcus into it. I also wouldn't mind if they fudged exactly when The Motion Picture happened and just did another five-year-mission. They already have several TOS cast members recast with younger actors already, so a second five-year mission series (bringing in M'Ress and Arex) I would like to see.

Doesn't change the opinion I read. He might not have agreed with it but that doesn't change what can be done.

The point is that Roddenberry was not some giving, "hey--everybody gets a shot" producer--even on TOS. He had a format and expectation of what he wanted, and despite the contributions of Coon, Fontana, et al., the series still had to fit his overall vision / format. He was even more in that frame of mind on TAS. The only thing to stop him was Paramount effectively booting him from any influence and control of ST.

Not sold that we should have yet another Kirk, but as we do, both of those are favourite periods for me. I'd do it as all one show over five seasons :

Season 1 - ToS Year 4
Season 2 - ToS Year 5 (introducing Arex and M'Ress ?)
Leave some "wiggle room" for TAS if it is still canon ?
Season 3 - Decommissioning and other events during refit leading up to TMP, mid season break then the immediate aftermath of TMP and 2nd 5 Year Mission starts.
Seasons 4 & 5 - more 2nd 5 Year Mission, crew rotate out leading towards TWOK.

And absolutely never, ever mention the bloody Starfleet Academy show that has been mooted every time they run out of ideas again.

Never. No. Just let it go...
I'd actually add to this list -

Season 2.5 - A full 3D animation (in the vein of Prodigy) redo of TAS using the original voice files and maybe a bit of minor 'tweaking' to reduce the silliness of a few episodes.

I am in the minority. I would love 7 seasons for SNW. And then they move on to TOS remake. I would love TOS with today's budget and technology. I would love TOS in a much more diverse world. I would love TOS without being cheesy. TNG is what made me a Trekkie. TOS was before me and I could never get into it as it did not age well. I did like most of the TOS movies with the exception of 1 and 5. So most of the stories would be new to me. The real question would be if the actors would sign on to play the same characters in a new show? (Spock, Uhura, Chappel)

I feel like trying to remake TOS with new actors is just going to result in another variation of what we've already got with SNW and Kelvin Trek. They can take a step closer to it by putting actors playing their version of Spock, McCoy and Kirk on the SNW sets, but only a step, and trying to retell stories like Balance of Terror and City on the Edge of Forever isn't likely to have great results.

I doubt that is the direction they will go. Telling other adventures within the TOS timeframe is perfectly reasonable given the supposed 5 year mission.

TOS does not need a reboot IMO but it could use a final two season run leading to and concluding with the Enterprise reporting to spacedock for an update. :D

I'm not interested in a new series about Kirk. It's like retreading old steps to me.

I've read all the comments made in various interviews over the last couple of years, and it seems pretty clear that the plan is:
1 - Pike will be captain of the Enterprise for SNW seasons 1 and 2
2 - James T. Kirk will take over as captain at some point in the series (alluded to by Anson Mount)
3 - Kirk will now be bi instead of straight (reported in June 2020), likely leading to some graphic K/S scenes on the show. This does double duty of importing fannish elements into official continuity, and aligns with CBS' goal of showing more diversity. Although I think some of the mandated woke content is a bit overboard, I would gladly and tune-in for this.

Really? You joined the Trekbbs just to post that nonsense?

I really don't want to go down this rabbit hole of personal attacks, but here you go. If you click on my profile, you will see that I joined Trekbbs over two years ago. Clearly, I joined just to make this post. Is this really what Trek fandom has come to? Does every post degenerate into false, assumption-based, personal attacks? There was a time when Star Trek fandom was much kinder.

As to your accusation that my theory is "nonsense" -
(not sure whether or not I should continues to use the spoiler tag here)
Discovery has gone through at least 5 captains in only 4 seasons, so there is no guarantee that Pike will stay on as captain of the Enterprise in SNW. It is already known that James T. Kirk will play a much bigger role in season 2, that will be his introduction to the series. Here's a news article about Kirk taking the helm.

Further, Anson Mount has said that Kirk will have his turn in the chair later.

As far as Kirk being bi? It was leaked last June that CBS was toying with the idea.

The K/S thing is my own addition - but I assumed it was obvious and it makes sense. The new shows are already about sex and relationships; everybody is sleeping with everybody and I have seen more of Spock and T'Pring than I have ever wanted to. In fact, more than would have been possible in pre-CBS canon.

CBS has been updating Star Trek in a diverse way. They made Robert April black (he was white in the animated series), and Chapel bi. They clearly have a policy of introducing gay, bi, trans, and non-binary characters. They are pushing the envelope. Wilson Cruz has called this a policy of "accelerated acceptance." I am not going to list all such characters here, but if you really need me to, I will. CBS has even added rainbows to all the Star Trek logos and show intros, yet you call my theory "nonsense."

CBS has a clear record of importing fan additions to the mythos. K/S has been a part of fandom since the 1960s.

It is only natural for there to be a K/S relationship of some kind in CBS Trek.

I am not stating an opinion on whether I like this or not, nor whether I think this is a good idea or not.

Only that it seems to me like all the pieces are in place for it, and I will certainly not be surprised when it happens.

Just how is this "nonsense"? Where have I erred in my logic?

1. I don’t care when you joined. Two days or two years makes no difference. You chose to make your first post about K/S nonsense.

2. The K/S thing makes NO sense. CBS isn’t going to turn the show into a homosexual BDSM fest. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

3. We Got This Covered is a clickbait site which posts false information for money. It can never be used as legitimate proof of anything.

What's your source for Mount's comments on Kirk eventually becoming the captain during SNW? The only thing I could find was this, which hardly implies that Kirk will take over.

I could see them having Kirk be bi, but with Spock already in a relationship which will have to endure into TOS I doubt they'll put him in a relationship with anyone else. But yeah, We Got This Covered is not a reliable source, so it's kind of a moot point.
