New Game: Think up a new idea for Star Trek series VI

It cannot be a "just another ship" series?

I wish that once, just once, people who say things like this would look up the definitions of the words Star and Trek. Just once.


This is EXACTLY what I thought as I read the "NOT" list! WTF?? :wtf:
 
Here's my idea. Not exactly new, but I think it has enough of a fresh spin.

Some day some starfleet scientist discovers a strange alien ship orbiting an uncharted dead star.
It is of a design nobody has ever encountered. But what is truly intriguing about it is the technology.
It features an engine fast enough to cross the galaxy within a couple of months so it could really travel at the speed of plot.
What's even more interesting is a machine the scientist finds out is some kind of quantum communication device. After they turn the thing on starfleet gains contact with never before seen or heard of aliens. As it turns out they inhabit a totally different galaxy. They tell our new protagonists, the machine is more than just a fancy communicator.
It can also transport matter instantly over intergalactic distances. It just has one catch. It only works if matter enters the machine on both sides simultaneously to be exchanged.
The aliens also believe there are only two of those ships in existence, they found theirs just like the feds did.
Ultimately both sides decide on a bold plan.
To search for the mysterious shipbuilders, to explore a whole new galaxy and for cultural exchange the each send a small specialist team trough the quantum communicator. Each team gets a diplomat/tour guide from the other side. Both crews would use the alien ship instead of their own vessels.
This would take place in the pilot episode. From now on the show would alternate in setting and cast from episode to episode. One week we show the strafleets in the new galaxy, the other week we would follow the aliens in our familiar surroundings.
Event episodes could show both of them and even let them interact some.

What do you think? Is that different enough?
 
Premise: Set 300 years after the TNG/DS9/Voyager era. The Federation is a distant memory. In its place, a vast alliance (somebody else can come up with the name, I don't care) of all the Milky Way's people - the former Fed races, Klingons, Cardassians, Dominion, etc. who all united when the Borg set out to conquer them all after the Dominion War. The Borg have been completely wiped out.

(The Borg aspect is not particularly important, just a bit of background to explain how we got to this point.)

There has been uninterrupted peace for over 200 years. However, the Milky Way is dying, mysterously collapsing in on itself. We must find the answer - before it's too late (queue ominous music).
 
I just think that I have a new idea

The time is several years after the next generation era where the Federation has a technology like Wormhole that make them able to travel to the other galaxy. Say, Andromeda.

Then, humans create a very big starship. It is not just starship, but a base ship. A Ship that has a function like a starbase. The size is as big as a standard Federation Starbase. It's mission is to become the Federation foot hold in the new galaxy.

The Story begin when the Base Ship come to the new Galaxy (Say Andromeda for example).

Because of the range between Milky Way and this new Galaxy, Humans can't go and back between the two galaxy. They just depend on this Base Ship as their Starfleet Command. In order to replace their supply and stand their foothold in this Galaxy, the first Human's mission is to establish the telecomunication to the Milky Way and create a sulficient Colony that can replenish their supply and need. And to establish the Federation political stand, scout ship and explorers are being send to establish first contact with the native.

Cast :

1. Admiral : He or she is the highest Starfleet officer that responsible for the Federation Starfleet Command in this new Galaxy. A strict man or woman who always love adventure. (why my first choice is captain Picard. Maybe because I'm his fanboy :D)

2. A captain of an explorer Ship (a Galaxy Class? or just a mere Miranda or another older class starship) : His job is to explore the strange new world. To seek out new live and new civilizations and establish first contact with them.

3. A Fleet Captain of a security Task Force. he or she commands several Defiant Class Starships. His / her job is to ensure the safety of the base ship and the colonies. (an old cast ? or new one? But it's weird to give this title to a new character, as old characters deserve a better title. But, whatever)

4. Colony Leader : He / she is the leader of the first human colony in the new Galaxy.

5. A Doctor : A Doctor of the base ship. He is the highest medical officer that the Starfleet has in this new Frontier. His job is to lead the another doctors and nurses.

6. An Engineer. He or she is the head of Federation new Shipyard in this new Galaxy. His or her job is to ensure the stability of the Federations equipment in this new frontier. Later, he or she will create a new Starship design that will make this story more interesting.

Later posible Casts :

1. Governor : The Federation's political representative in this new Frontier. Unlike the Admiral, his job is to ensure the present of Federation in this Galaxy.

2. Trader???

Federation property (it's can be change) :

1. USS Federation NCC 000001. The first Federation Base Ship and the first starship that can create an artificial wormhole.

2. USS London NCC XXXXXX. An old Federation starship that docked in the first Federation Base Ship. It is the last Ambasador class Starship that Federation ever has.

3. Several Defiant Class Starship. The Flagship called USS Riverrun. An enhanced Defiant class that has the capability to detect a large area around the Federation Teritory.

4. New Earth : The first Federation Colony in the new Galaxy.

5. Ship Yard : A Shipyard created on the New Earth Orbit. Because of it's limited capability, the best starship it can make is old Federation Starship design like MIranda.

One of the things I've always found facinating with Star Trek, is not so much the ship or the trek, but the people. How the people live and interact in the Star Trek Universe. So, rolling eyes at a series based in the 'universe' that Gene Roddenbury created, is a bit short-sighted.

My idea:

a relatively small cast. 5 or 6 people. The Federation 'Marshal's' office. They go after people like Keifus (?) Fajo and the two DS9 guys who went 'Maquis', and the time traveling con man.

Then you've got your semi regulars - The Outrageous Okana and other 'fun' characters.

The office is based on a space station within (relatively) easy reach of the first 4 (or 5) Federation members Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, [can't remember this one] and depending on which way the canon goes, Alpha Centauri.

The main character - a female - 40ish, is the highest ranking deputy marshal and also has a house on Earth which she travels to ... on weekends or something.

the marshal - 60ish, male, whatever ...

couple other deputies

a 'administrative' person.

Plenty of room for at least two 'overall' story arcs - the one big bad guy we meet in the first episode and is finally captured at the end, and a romantic arc for the main character whom she meets in the first episode and ... they live happily ever after by the end.

and many 'single serving' episodes.
 
I had an idea for a series which has its roots in a concept my cousin and I came up with decades ago ...


STAR TREK RACES

It is 2385 - about the same span of time after Nemesis in the Trek universe as it has been in real life since the films release - and Captain Jean Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise are exploring a mysterious planet of alien ruins when - a mammoth ship glides out of some sort of hyperspace, swoops in above the Enterprise and ...

Lieutenant Daniel Cameron, the ships dashing Helm Officer, vanishes - wakes up in the massive hold of the mammoth ship with no idea how long he's been unconscious and no idea where the mammoth ship now is.

It turns out that Cameron is a specimen of the Human race, collected by the mammoth vessel which is on an automated tour of the Milky Way to collect specimens from every race seeded by the Ancient Humanoids and take them to another galaxy where they will colonise.

Lieutenant Cameron has been judged by the ships sentient (albeit, quirky) computer system as the most mentally well balanced specimen that has been collected and has been awoken first - the computer gives him command functions and permits him to wake the other specimens from sleep.

Chaos erupts on the collector ship as the specimens wake because warring races now find themselves along with each other in confined spaces and Cameron must exert authority over the representatives, gathering a council of four other races - one from each of the traditional quadrants, none of which he has previously encountered - including:

KRON is a representative of an amphibious alien race which worships technology and considers engineers and technicians the way some species consider priests. Luckily for our specimens, Kron is a member of the 'priest' cast of his race - and quickly gains a handle on the majestic god that is our ship.

ATULA is the four armed representative of a pirate race - who becomes the right hand woman of Lieutenant Cameron, though not out of choice. She becomes the senior representative of the allied factions who oppose Cameron, but quickly comes to respect and admire him.

Cameron also uses the systems he's been allowed to access to give the ships sentient mainframe a holographic representative - fixing a matrix that has been dead for millenia - and gives the mainframes female personification a name: WELLES.

The ship is nicknamed the MAYFLOWER after the ship used by the pilgrims.

The show would be a bottle show - as the specimens struggle to come to a cohesive crew and live together, struggle with the fact they're now nothing more than animals in a massive spacefaring zoo, there are lots of stories to be told.

In the second episode of the season, a previously unknown races biology prooves to be fatal to the others on the ship when toxins in the aliens skin cause a plague to sweep through the collectors population and Cameron and the council members work to solve the problem.

The game is afoot in the third episode when a specimen is murdered by one of the others and Cameron determines to figure out who did it - whilst in the fourth episode, a fundamentalist gains power amongst the anti-Cameron population and the crew must figure out how to stop a civil war amongst the specimens.
 
i came up with two ideas based on alternate universes and posted in the fan fic area 24 hours or so ago - no responses.

I have all kinds of ideas the hard thing is to pick just one.

Heres 5.

1. The borg wars. Its a new kind of war because its got temporal hopping,
escalating as each side hops further and further backwards in time- which then ends up involving some of those interesting aliens which were supposed to exist long time ago according to trek universe.
2. The obvious foook all the gene roddenberry limitations- what if they developed a new warp system capable of traveling to other galaxies- so star trek but now instead ofgoing from star to star they are going from galaxy to galaxy- a much more adult and much more advanced sort of show
where the interest really relies on the exploration end of finding and exploring new civilizations and such.
3. The aliens that can't stand the idea of Data being wasted- travel back in time in cloaked vessel, rescue him, give him a ship- full of android duplicates of himself.
4. Mission impossible trek. TOS era, a group of 20 small ultra high tech super secret agency which does top secret missions ala mission impossible.
They would have a lot more aliens in the crew.
5. BSG crossover. Some deep exploration surveyor runs into a very large fleet of very primitive early war ships fleeing genocidal robots...
 
This concept would bring back Trek to its glory days:p

Star Trek Brains and Lizards.

In every even numbered episode, the brain of one of the main cast members is stolen.

And in the odd numbered ones, one of the crewmembers turn into a lizard.
 
It's not the story concept that's been the problem with Trek. It's been the execution of the concept.

It was an interesting idea. I'm opposed to rebooting the series but I can see where this is an intriguing concept.

Star Trek should stay far away from creating a big, bad, all powerful enemy. I'm of the mindset that creating such overwhelming enemies is like a drug. It's a lure. A gimmick.

Maybe in the right hands it can be done. But it would take a dictator in charge to oversee this. Star Trek's been ran by a committee and look where it's gotten - the same as everything else. Watered-down and spread thin simply in an attempt to appeal to the masses.

I hated JMS and his arrogance but the first four years of Babylon 5 do make for an excellent series. After that, it all went downhill but I think there are other factors responsible for that.

Regardless I think if you have one person in overall charge of the plan and vision, you can make a compelling story.

Science fiction and story telling has changed since the 60s. Star Trek was made at a time when shows were episodic. The whole intent was to make the show so a viewer could miss an episode or watch the episodes out of order and not be lost. Times have changed. Now we have story arcs and entire series focused on one overreaching plan.

And that's what I'd do. I'd follow basic approach RDM has taken with Battlestar Galactica. You have one overall Series Arc. One story that starts with the first episode and ends with the last episode. Inside this Arc you will have Season Arcs. In each season Arc you have multiple Story Arcs. Extend it further or included in this would be individual Character Arcs.

Cut the technobabble down. One idea presented in the TOS Writer's Bible was to not bog the story down with too much technobabble. The Bible said "Matt Dillon doesn't explain in detail about his horse, Joe Friday doesn't go on about how his gun works and Marcus Welby didn't go on about how medical proceedures work." Technobabble has turned many off. In the end, stripped naked of the science fiction elements the same story should be able to be told in any setting.

I came up with an idea for a female captain of the Enterprise B. This was before Generations showed us the E-B and before Voyager showed us Janeway. Two ideas of mine stolen, but I digress... One of the rules I kept to in my series was going "where no man had gone before." For all its talk about exploration, Star Trek did a lot within Federation space. I stated that the first season must not feature any major stories or plot points set within the known universe or dealing with known aliens. The entire first season should be about exploring strange new worlds.

One of the things that killed Voyager was it didn't adhere to the rules established within it's own story. Voyager was about a ship in a hostile land trying to find its way back home. No supplies. No friends. Abandoned and alone. Unfortunately it didn't look very abandoned and alone. We should have seen more stories featuring the concepts of "reduce, reuse, recycle." Instead they kept churning shuttles out like they were in infinite supply. Every week Voyager looked fresh and pristine. They had a messhall with real food being cooked but still had enough power to run the holodeck. And they never ran out of photon torpedoes.

If your going to come up with some bold new concept have the decency to stick with the concept and explore that concept as much as you can. Don't mention it in passing and then present the show as if that concept never existed.
 
I had a series of ideas back around 1999-2000. Let's see if I can find them. I am sure some would need to be updated but I will post the unexpurgated version.

Well I found one!

ST:VIRTUAL GALAXY (or just GALAXY):

The time: late 24th century, after the final murmurings of conflict of the Breen and earlier Dominion wars a new information age arises following the discovery of an ancient alien, galaxy-wide web that will take decades to explore. A new class of explorer ship is designed to tap into the this galactic net, as it becomes more efficient to explore the galaxy by using the remnants of old messages as historical archives and the intriguing discovery of NEW messages from younger alien races using the backbone of the old technology.

The adventure will be two-fold: the advanced 3-D communications holographic centers adjacent to the bridge on board the starship will take advantage of the carrier waves of the packets of complex, multi-layered data being sent over them, providing a new, seemingly real "universe" to explore. In this universe the crew can interract with the information, some of which is the network interpretation of neural thought patterns that were linked to extremely sophisticated communications systems. Others are standard transwarp messages and data that ran continuously over the system millions of years before. The new messages offer the possibility of first contact of literally hudndreds of species that have used the abandoned system--providing a quick shortcut to space exploration. This Second part of the adventure will demonstrate the ship equipped to physically explore some of these new and lost races when so desired. There is also the hope that the creators of this system will either still exist in some form and their whereabouts will be discovered for the benefit of the Federation and alpha quadrant.

The ship will be tied to a new series of starbases established at various hubs of the system..there will be teams of support personnel that will also be availbale to swap out equipment and to download information to transmit to the Memory planets of the UFP. New crews can be seen on board based on the mission, and a rotating cast is a possibility here. Science vessels are stationed and in case of contact with hostile lifeforms, the starbases are equipped with a Defiant class vessel and...an upgraded self destruct, so information cannot be easily obtained by potential attackers.

This series will allow for "information age" relevancy in the the ST universe, expanding on the rather pat, classical portrayal of SF seen on modern Trek. It offers an even easier way to explore the galaxy, transforming "wagon train to the stars" into "info superhighway to the stars". It preserves the basic premises of ST as we know it and does not limit potential stories in any way.

"A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts... A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding..."

An attempt at combining radical new characters with a coventional concept to stretch the boundaries of the Star Trek universe's imagination. Might possibly work better as a CGI series.

The Century, a super explorer class vessel armed for battle against the Dominion and Borg threats, but with the most integrated multi-species crew in Starfleet to represent the UFP to the opening frontiers of the galaxy..her bridge crew..

Emon'Vesh- The non-corporeal Medusan ambassador to the Federation. Lives in its own cubicle/quarters where it uses the innate navigating sense developed by its species over millions of years of evolution to help guide the ship. Though detached from the other lifeforms onboard ship for safety, it continually studies the behavior of the various organisms, which it finds endlessly fascinating.'

Protector of Humans- Kzin security chief..8 feet tall and 600 pounds of furry sex appeal. Named for his position as are all Kzinti in the worker caste. Superior intelligence and keen curiosity, but has a vicious mean streak when crossed..even Klingons are careful with a crewman who can rend a Nausicaan limb from limb. Has a fear of water.

Lt Cmdr Ti-Shei- Artificial life form from a planet of sentient machines discovered deep in the Beta quadrant who became quick members of the Federation. Ti-Shei is the science officer and can interface with the ship and the magna-gel packs through a special station on the bridge. Contrary to what one might expect, Ti is actually very eager to get along with other species and is in fact somewhat annoying to some crew members who feel uncomfortable with such an unusual and talkative machine standing over them. Can change into vaguely familiar and useful machines at will.

Lt JG Vasulac- A sentient plant. A member of a mysterious species long thought to be xenophobic, Vasulax is the ops officer of the Century 2000. Everyone wonders what it's background history is, and throughout the series we will find that its origins are even more ominous than they first appear..

Lt Varos- Human female of Latino descent, 31. She is the chief engineer of the ship. She strikes up a quick friendship with Protector, and defends his moments of hotheadedness to the crew. She finished first in her class at the academy and is very perceptive..she takes an interest in Vasulac's past.

Ensign Kindle- Human male, 26. Kindle is the navigator/con officer of the ship when Emon'Vec is not on duty, and that is often because it requires much rest. He sometimes resents playing second fiddle to the Medusan, bringing up some uncomfortable emotions. Kindle is an excellent athlete and often is shown working out in the ship's gym.

Ensign Thilec- One of the first of the crystalline Tholian's in Starfleet. Has a grudge against the Jem'Hadar for inadvertently wiping out a Tholian colony world which was inhabited by 50 of his brothers and sisters and is angry his race was not more involved in the war.

First Officer Mystak- An Andorian female with a long history of service aboard 3 explorer class vessels. She's known as a troubleshooter and quickly has ships running in tip top condition. She has become very friendly with Ti-Shei and the captain, as she is outgoing and an eager explorer of the unknown..perhaps too eager, as she has been accused of putting her teams in jeopardy for a big discovery.

Captain Syral Vykistien Indiq- An 81-year old Saurian reptilian, and well known for stocking his home planet's favorite export. Indiq holds the various species of his crew together with his extraordinary ability to organize and charming wit. Of medium stature but with a commanding presence, he has won numerous decorations in the face of overwhelming odds in the Dominion war, but was best known for discovering Ti-Shei's home planet before the conflict started. It was hoped they could prove useful against the Borg threat, and he was decorated highly for a resoundingly successful first contact mission. A veteran of 57 first contact missions.

Saurians are known to have 4 hearts and THREE names. First is the birth name, second a clan name, and lastly a historical reference that changes throughout their lifetime. Saurians have an intricate, almost musical language that is sung and cannot be spoken by most humanoids due to laryngeal structure, though Saurians have no trouble pronouncing phonetic languages such as English.

1st Idea
A series dealing with the post-Dominion war weakness and rebuilding of the Federation, and the subsequent rise of another power to replace the Federation as the dominant power in the Alpha Quadrant.

Political unrest, continued economic difficulties and reduced scope for projecting power outwith its own borders (due to the destruction of a large portion of the Starfleet in the Dominion War), eventually leading to a large number of member worlds wishing to secede from the Federation and return to operating as independent states. It would make a nice allegory for the post war decline and eventual demise of the British Empire, and for the fear that the United States will eventually be usurped by China as the world's dominant power.

It would be interesting to see the unease in the Federation as it slowly begins to realise that the Romulans/Tholians or whoever are taking over the Federation's hitherto unrivalled place as the leading power in the quadrant. How would the Federation react knowing that it is about to be outpaced by a xenophobic, almost unremittingly hostile imperial state?

I think an idea like this opens up considerably more avenues and opportunities for telling interesting stories on the broad Star Trek canvas, and is more relevant to the current state of world affairs than just "another" ship or space station based Star Trek show.

2nd Idea
Set approximately 10-20 years after first contact, showing Earth's first tentative steps into space exploration, suitably helped and held back by the Vulcans in equal measure. We've heard plenty about the eradication of war, poverty and disease, but we've never actually been shown much about the processes that took place to eradicate them, so it would be interesting to see from that perspective.

Just how much help did the Vulcans give to Earth in its efforts to rebuild its shattered post WW3 society, and just how much of their own technology did they hold back in an attempt to stop Earth from developing too quickly, and conversely, how much were they willing to share? Were the humans welcoming of the Vulcans or suspicious and slightly xenophobic? Were the Vulcans always so condescending towards humanity, or did their apparent Enterprise era disdain for the human race come about as a result of almost 90 years of dealing with a species that was largely ungrateful for their assistance?

All of this would be very interesting to see, and again would provide far more scope for interesting and relevant storytelling than a ship or space station based show.

Both of these concepts could possibly prove successful, but only if the stories, dialogue, direction, and character development were pitched at a suitably adult level, a la Battlestar Galactica. Stories, dialogue and character development of a standard commonly seen on Voyager or Enterprise would render both ideas utterly insipid and uninteresting, exactly what happened on both of those shows - decent concepts ruined by hamfisted, lowest common denominator execution.

Star Trek: Star Wars

Just a bunch of space battles, focusing on the Federation. It is either constantly attacked or taking the offensive to gain/regain strategic areas. Title legal issues aside....
 
Star Trek: Holodeck Adventures

Just let the writers have their own series about the holodeck and get it all out of their systems (Sherlock Holmes, Dixon Hill, Fairhaven, Chaotica, WWII, the Alamo, Fairy Land, etc.) so we can avoid these episodes in the future.
 
With all due respect, none of the Trek series have really been based on the others.

They've shared some aspects, but they all differed from each other.

Voyager, in concept, was the most like the original series, but is usually regarded as the least popular among Trek fans.

DS9 is the only Trek show that one could call a direct spin-off from a previous encarnation of Trek, as it (eventually) had two characters from TNG as regulars on the show. But, it's the only one that didn't center around a particular ship at it's inception. Though, even that changed somewhat as the show went on as the Defiant took a bigger role. And, Trek fans often consider it the best written of all of the Trek series.

In the other thread, I mentioned the idea that was ultimately introduced in Insurrection. The notion of a rift from within the Federation itself. Something along the lines of a Federation civil war.

The show could be centered more from a central command perspective, but integrating ships as necessary for inter-federation squabbles in a way similar to how they handled the Dominion War.

You could still, periodically, have guest spots from the TNG era shows, as it would take place right around the same time as Nemesis.

Post-Nemesis could actually be used as the initial backdrop, with the same factions who were responsible for what we saw in Insurrection trying to sabotage peace talks with the Romulans.

I guess sort of combining some of the aspects of Star Trek VI, DS9 and Insurrection in a post-Nemesis universe.

This is the best REASON for going all CGI for a series.
Not having to shoot live action generally saves money (sets, lighting, production crew, location-based production in L.A.)
 
I want a series that we don't know is Star Trek until the end of season one.

We'd follow the lives of a team of aliens and their families working to create their civilization's first warp ship, and the problems it causes both among the principle cast and the civilization at large. The launch finally occurs in last episode of the season, with the aftermath being a space ship landing on the planet, and humans walking out. It would be an interesting reversal of the "take me to your leader" situation.

The series would not be planned to last past the second season, which would explore the world as it becomes aware of the intergalactic community.

This is not a good business idea.
1. Star Trek is a brand. Businesses (like this large franchise Paramount owns) use their brand for advertising and spread it all over. They are not going to hide their brand name. Period.
2. A series planned for only 2 seasons sells their product short. The last series of Trek ran for 4 years. The two before that ran for 7 years each.
If it is not a feature film then a longer life must be planned for a series. 'Alias' & 'Lost' were both planned for 5 year lifespans.
