We will definitely get a female Doctor soon (Moffat's blow off of casting a woman was sad) and the world will go on, leaving people who can't handle a woman as a mainstream hero in the past.
It is heavily implied that during the run between the Wedding of River Song and TNOTD that the Doctor had a full marital relationship with River, albeit not spelled out on screen.
That said, I don't think that can be classed as shagging about, she was his wife.

Capaldi is an interesting choice; I never thought they'd cast an older actor, but I'm glad they did. I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll do with the role.
