New Companion Rumour

^He would only accept being the Doctor!
Shamelessly stolen from Twitter...

Announcing the announcement of making an announcement (ad nauseam) is a current media fad that just fucking puts me off whatever it is... Big fucking deal. - I'll look at the internet an hour or so afterwards. When, of course, it'll turn out to be some lass I've never heard of, and who I have no idea what she'd be like until her episodes actually air. Like normal.

Like the "huge" announcement that ended up being Class?

The announcement of a spin-off series was truly a huge announcement, though. The BBC gave the greenlight to a multi-million pound investment. That's properly huge.

Unfortunately, they bungled the roll-out of the announcement. The pre-announcement hype wasn't the problem. The lack of any useful details with the announcement itself was the problem. The cast pictures and synopsis that we got two weeks ago should have been part of the original announcement so that people would have had something to wrap their minds around. The "Oh, hey, we're making a Doctor Who spin-off and we'll tell you more later" announcement wasn't just bad PR, it let people project their hopes and fears onto Class and assume the worst of it.

Having Capaldi's Doctor being the companion of McGann's Doctor would be funny. Especially if he has to keep that he is also the Doctor a secret from his younger self. Though I'm not sure if he (the Doctor that is) could pull that off for very long. At least not without nearly destroying the universe via the first law of time or something like that.

Now that I think about it, Matt Smith's concept for series 8 -- a tenth/eleventh Doctor team-up -- could work for eight/twelve. There's a space/time threat that's too big for one Doctor to handle, so he works with another Doctor to defeat it.

Hmm not sure is someone with that level of profile and experience necessarily justifies a live announcement but I guess we'll see. Given how well they kept a lid on Capaldi I do wonder if it will be a complete surprise.

If it's not someone super famous they are going to look like fools. Hell, they're even running ads it on BBC1.

Seriously, ads for the announcement of the casting of a role in a TV series. It's pretty insane when you think about it.

Well really Eight would have to be Twelve's companion given he's about 1000 years younger, and it'd have to be a two Doctor season, I don't think they could pull the "who are you?" trick for 12 episodes, and at the end Eight would basically have to forget it all!
Age really doesn't matter. The whole point would be to see Capaldi's Doctor doing his best to act in a companion role to keep Eight in the dark about what was really going on, make sure things go right without disrupting all of time and space and all that. Of course then we have the funnies when it is completely obvious to Eight what is going on and they team up as proper equals and banter and bicker and finally joke about how its a shame they always forget these things.

On the Twitter feed there's also a picture of the companion's shoes (not being worn) next to Capaldi's boots (also not being worn) outside the TARDIS.

So I guess the Doctor and companion are taking their shoes off when they enter the TARDIS now? Hope the console room is now carpeted.

Ugh, actually that told me everything I was interested in knowing. It's going to be yet another relatively contemporary human woman. Boo.

I couldn't give a wit about who it actually is.

Meh, it's pretty obvious by now that's what we're always going to get. Like I said earlier, the only time they were planning a non-contemporary companion (Clara), the fact they turned her into a contemporary companion at the last minute requiring half a season to be re-written makes it pretty clear someone important only wants contemporary companions.

Okay, I guess Captain Jack wasn't contemporary either, though he was secondary companion to a contemporary character. And when it came time to give Jack his own show, they turned him into a contemporary character.

This better be someone famous and not from "Eastenders"

I like that they are being silly about it.

Matt Smith's Doctor was the silly one trying to be serious (sometimes), while Peter Capaldi's Doctor is the serious one who's being silly (sometimes). So this fits very well.

This best not be an anticlimax! I'm guessing with the timing that the new companion maybe somebody already known? Particularly with the football crowd? A WAG?

You know, it could be the most trollish answer possible. A huge delay in production. Allowing for Jenna Coleman to finish filming on Victoria so she can return to Doctor Who as a difference Clara fragment.

Just to seriously mess with us.

That or Billy Piper.
