NEW AVATAR Trailer

Told you so.

I just love the amount of HATRED towards the movie and Cameron the last time and everyone now is going "I love it!"

Told you so.

I just love the amount of HATRED towards the movie and Cameron the last time and everyone now is going "I love it!"

I talk about this at work a lot, I work at a blockbuster, and I can't tell you how many people will literally say "well, it's James Cameron so it has to be good, I'll see it".

The man has built a reputation around himself. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing breaks some records when it comes out.

There's also this parody of the first trailer:

There's a featurette also up online. This is mostly what you'd expect - self-laduatory sound-bytes from directors, actor and SFX guys about what a visionary film they're involved in. I'm linking it because it also includes some additional footage giving us a good look at some of the other creatures on Pandora (some sort of hammerhead rhino) and the habitat of the Na'vi, in addition to some strange plants.

I know I'm in an ever dwindling minority (which is even weirder when one considers I'm not really a Cameron fan), but gosh, this movie looks nice. I can't quite agree that we've never seen this before, as the featurette inevitably trumpets (exotic aliens, alien creatures, a planetscape, and futuristic vessels? I think the Star Wars prequels had all of these and in greater quantity than Avatar does), but I really like where the design of this feature is heading. I very dearly love planetary romance and there isn't enough of it, I say!

Speaking of someone with deep feelings of inadequacy. Oy. Dude is a moron.
Very true. It's actually doing a disservice to scepticism towards this movie (which, yeah, I do think is solidly based) to say that this guy's peonic ramblings constitute their best summation. C'mon, you can do better than that. ;)

That was a much better trailer. Something about the earlier snippets really didn't give me an idea of how well he seems to be able to juxtapose the two very different aesthetics. Still a tad skeptical of the Pandora look, but this trailer has me looking forward to seeing it.

I've seen the long 3min trailer for this now.

Why all the hype???

Seriously its Star Trek:Insurrection 2.0

The plot is the same. Move some group of people in order to harvest an element for the betterment of the many. Its just flashier and more action packed.

I may see it, I may not. The visuals looked fine but its not the second coming of George Lucas.

In short, too much hype for a basic plot that has been done before.

I talk about this at work a lot, I work at a blockbuster, and I can't tell you how many people will literally say "well, it's James Cameron so it has to be good, I'll see it".
People will say this until that movie that shows their vulnerability. I heard it about Battlefield Earth from one friend in particular. Travolta films are usually good. Even though I told him it looked like crap.
Harrison Ford and Hollywood Homicide.
Steven Spielberg and AI:Artificial Intelligence.

It's a well-made trailer, and it looks interesting visually, but its kind of shocking how pedestrian the story seems. Above post calling it Insurrection 2.0 actually has it exactly right.

I'll see it, but like so many others, it's more about blind faith in James Cameron (that's one seriously impressive 'from the director of' list in the trailer) than "wow this movie looks so awesome I have to see it".

Honestly, it really reminds me of the CG intros that come with each World of Warcraft expansion. It's very "Outland" and "Night Elf" (see the floating chunks of land, looking like Nagrand, everything having that brightly colored blue-ish CG look).

Stories about people "going native" are as old as... well you know. That critique can be applied to virtually any story told.

I had not read the old Cameron scriptrment for Avatar that has floated around the 'net, but the teaser trailer made it pretty clear to me that this looked like "Dances With Wolves" with a Sci-Fi twist. And this new trailer confirms that further.

And I'm okay with that. In fact very okay, since "Dances..." is one of my favorite films. :D And on top of that we are getting a Sci-Fi film from one of the best visual storytellers around in Hollywood. I see no downside in this, from my point of view. :)

With "Star Trek" and "District 9" it has been a great Sci-Fi year in films. (I have not seen "Moon" yet) And I look forward to "Avatar" closing out the Sci-Fi year in style!

Why all the hype???

You've clearly had a different experience to me. I saw the first trailer, liked it, and then was rather surprised at the outpouring of venom towards it. I gather the project was quite hyped prior to the trailer (not that I had been paying attention, mind) and there was then a big hype backlash after that trailer was released.

Since then the internet reaction to the project I've seen... well, it's lukewarm at best. Just look at this thread, plenty of folks critiquing the film's premise/trailers and not even a token THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER! response.

As far as hype goes, this isn't exactly The Dark Knight.

Honestly, it really reminds me of the CG intros that come with each World of Warcraft expansion. It's very "Outland" and "Night Elf" (see the floating chunks of land, looking like Nagrand, everything having that brightly colored blue-ish CG look).

On a related note, if the CGI technology is as great as those behind it claim it is, it's definitely something the Warcraft movie could use. I couldn't really see the Tauren, say, in a live action film as anything other than CGI. The same applies to a lesser extent for most of Warcraft's principal non-human races.

(I have not seen "Moon" yet)
Remedy this, as soon as possible! ;)

If I had seen this trailer first, I would've had no interest in the movie. It doesn't wow me the same way the first one did.

I'll see it, but like so many others, it's more about blind faith in James Cameron (that's one seriously impressive 'from the director of' list in the trailer)

Speaking of Cameron's previous work, I wonder if 20th Century Fox will try to cash in with any sort of special Cameron DVD box set. They have access to a majority of his movies. They outright own The Abyss, Aliens, & True Lies. MGM owns The Terminator but 20th Century Fox has been distributing MGM's DVDs for years now. 20th Century Fox was the primary studio behind Titanic, although Paramount has been the one putting out its DVDs.

The only Cameron films that 20th Century Fox isn't somehow tied to are Piranha II (which everyone would be better off forgetting anyway) and Terminator 2 (which is now owned by Lionsgate).

Like I've said before: The most revolutionary part of this isn't the CG as such. It's the 3d effects. They're far more impressive than anything I've seen before. (Granted, what I've seen before may be a bit limited.) But you can't really get that from a 2d trailer on a computer screen.

Above post calling it Insurrection 2.0 actually has it exactly right.

...that this looked like "Dances With Wolves" with a Sci-Fi twist. And this new trailer confirms that further.
Insurrection 2.0 or Dances with Wolves(people like saying this one more cause it won some awards I guess)
The plot is the same: Forced removal of an indigenous group of people so another group can utilize the land or other resource upon it.

Frankly too much is being placed on this movie simply cause its Cameron. I'm fine if people want to be excited about the visuals but lets don't act like the story is something revolutionary. Titanic was still just a love story but that at least roped in swooning females. I don't see visual loving tech nerds keeping Avatar propped up for the weeks that girls propped up Titanic. Avatar will have a good 2 weeks, beyond that it has no vast appeal to the masses.

This movie looks absolutely terrible. The effects look like they were done in 1999. The story is tired. Pass.
