New Animated Series in Development?

backstept

Responding to a tweet from TrekMovie, Star Trek writer Bob Orci revealed on his twitter feed tonight that he’s been talking about putting together an animated Trek. Just exactly who he’s been talking to about this remains a little unclear, based on the context of the conversation it’s either something he’s been mulling over with his Star Trek co-writer Alex Kurtzman, or it’s something he and Alex have actually been talking about with Trek rights-holders Paramount and CBS. Either way, I like the thought process.

Hmm . . . interesting.

personally I would hope it's done in a style that's more towards the classic animated series, and not like some popular animated shows these days. maybe even more towards Clone Wars than Phineas and Ferb . . . if that makes sense

in fact I'd love it if the new ST:TAS looked like the Clone Wars :D

If this is true, I would love to see it happen. I would even love to help develop it if that was possible.

The screenwriters are currently behind Transformers: Prime. However, whereas Transformers has had much success with animation in the past, can't say the same about Trek, which is mainly a live-action franchise with one short-lived toon.

TF prime seems to have a lower budget than Clone Wars, as well....however "Trek" can use say, the same models more if it sticks to a similar look to the TV shows.

I assume this has nothing to do with that *other* new TAS rumor, the one set in the 25th (or was it the 26th?) century, and all the episodes would be like 6 minutes long?

yep, roughly 5 years ago there was talk about an animated series that took place after the last tng movie where it has a gloomy setting. there were a couple of test pics of the cast. the artwork seemed reminiscent of the new gi-joe cartoon from what i remember.

Something in the vein of Batman: The Brave and the Bold would be fun. A bit campy and not afraid to poke some fun at itself. But at the same time having some more complex story telling then your regular "it's a cartoon so it's for kids" show mentality.

There are tons of opportunities animation can take advantage of that a 2 hour movie or a live action TV show can't get away with due to lack of running time/small weekly TV budget.

This is the way to go. The designs could be exquisite and they would just be reused over and over again. Think of the matte painting renditions. Alien planets and worlds. Art and music finally together and no egos to interfere or worry about, just some recognized name voices. Pure and simple. An adult cartoon.

I'm curious and cautiously hopeful. That said if it turns out to be something spun off the Abrams' Trek continuity then I couldn't give a damn.

I only care about whether it's good or not. Which universe it takes place in really doesn't matter. :techman:

^this. But from everything I've read/seen, and broader potential of animation, TITAN would seem best way to go.

If Bob Orci is developing it, I seriously doubt he's going to lift a novel only series wholesale. It'll be in the 23rd century and more than likely will focus on Kirk/Spock.

I just realized it's pointless being on these boards for the forseeable future because they are not to going to compete with that mediocre crap they're force feeding us. They have a monopoly juggernaut on the space game. Drips and drabs are all you're gonna get or they'll take that away too if you don't like it. The business strategy is to create a demand that they have a corner on.

I actually would not have a problem with this, oh course that might be becuase I 1) didn't have a problem with the film and generably liked it and 2) like TOS the best any way.

So, is there any evidence whatever - other than an ambiguous "we've talked about it" tweet from Orci - that any such project is "in development?"

Nope, and TrekMovie is reporting at this point that the "we" is Orci and Kurtzman. There is no CBS or Paramount involvement yet.
