Just wanted to show off my first big cross stitch project of the year...

Noticed this building when in Toronto at the end of November and wondered what it was. Struck me as something you'd find at university but now in hindsight and the clock town - it wouldn't the old town hall?

It is, in fact. It was our city hall from 1899 until 1965, and it's currently used as a provincial courthouse. My grandfather worked there for years.

Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but I figured I'd post the results of some of my idle time at work. Photobooth on the work iMac is pretty good at making me look like a douchey self-help author. But I digest ...

You look like Richard Hammond from Top Gear.

For some reason that I can't quite place, I'm getting a Steve Buscemi vibe - but RapidNadion would definitely be from the more handsome side of the Buscemi family tree!

Actually, I was getting a John Waters vibe. I think it's the pose more than anything else.

Just thought I'd share this shot of Mrs.Q2 and I taken before we left for our 10th. Wedding Anniversary dinner (just before Christmas). Ten years, man, time has sure flown by (in a very good way).

Happy Anniversary! I told you before and I'll tell you again, you and your wife make a wonderful couple. :)

It has been so cold here, in Central Oklahoma, that my pond has completely frozen over. It has never frozen so throughly that I was able to completely walk across it. Had my neighbor not been busting the ice, so his cows could get a drink, it would be smooth enough for ice skating.

Thanks for sharing your pictures with us. :)

I expect in years to come you'll be thinking back to the winter of 2010 and telling folks stories of how it was so cold the pond froze over, etc etc.

Some nice sentimental memories there :)

What is maddening is that a lot of places want a graphic designer AND a web designer all in one. Our curriculum covered user interfaces and things like that, but never went over any HTML or CSS. That's what the Web Design & Interactive Media degree program is for. I guess a lot of places now want to save money by hiring one "jack of all trades" instead of specific specialists.

This is one of the biggest problems with liberal arts education today. Institutions are simply not preparing students for the reality that convergence has taken over the field of communication, be it visual or written, and the days of specialized employment are over.

Newspapers don't hire writers anymore: They hire people who can write, take photographs and shoot video, and if they can work with InDesign, so much the better. Creative directors can't just claim Photoshop and Illustrator proficiency and call it a day; they need to demonstrate proficiency with Web development and other fields. It's frustrating to try to draw new employees from the local colleges, and see that they're still being taught as though media and communication today is the same as it was even ten years ago.

That's the way it works at my company, too. I hired a new graphic designer last year, and her duties involve making print ads, developing skins for DotNetNuke-based Web sites (heavily CSS-based), some Flash animation and a few other miscellaneous tasks. At any given moment on any given day, I might be writing, shooting or cutting video, reviewing content, doing a photo shoot, fixing the printer or designing marketing pieces.

It sucks. Good luck in finding a job. In the interim, start reading every book you can find on other proficiencies in the field of communication, so you can widen your portfolio and make yourself more attractive to potential employers.

Kira's Mom, are you going to frame her, make a pillow with her or do you have any set plans for her yet? I wish i had that kind of patience and attention span, but i do not. She is really lovely.

I was bored earlier, and I thought "You know what would be awesome to have that I don't? Chainmail!" And, like always when I have thoughts like this, I was off to Home Depot.

Here's what I accomplished in about an hour:

Well, that, and I made about 300 rings. I'm making the rings from 14 gauge steel wire using only hand tools.

Looks awfuly "open" for good chain mail, but go-you dude!

So I'm not the only one who thought that then again maybe he's practicing before he makes the smaller rings.

There's only 23 rings there. I spread it out so it looked like I had more done. Now that I have a little over a hundred rings put together, it's starting to look more like it should:

chainmail2.jpg

The rings are kind of large, ID 1/2 in. I was going to use 12-gauge wire originally, but they only had 9, 14, and 16 gauge. I got 14-gauge wire but I didn't go smaller on the diameter. Now that I'm actually working with it, if I went any smaller it would be at least twice as difficult. Plus, smaller diameter means more rings, and this thing is already going to be heavy as hell. I'm making it sleeveless so it won't be as heavy as it could be, but still. However, if I'm not satisfied with the finished product, and I decide I really want chainmail, I'll probably go 18-gauge and 3/8 in diameter. This project turns out to be a lot easier than I originally thought it was going to be, so I may make a second one anyway.
