I think it's up to the institution, but generally, a BA is awarded for more academic subjects, while a BS is used for subjects that are for a specific profession. YMMV, of course.

Those aren't the only two options either - personally I have a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering.

That's how I've always understood it as well. Throughout my years in school I'd always have friends and family members question me as to why I was getting a BS rather than a BA since "graphic design is, you know, art".

I've had two interviews so far since graduation. One said thanks but no thanks and wanted someone with more experiences, and the other place hasn't given me an answer one way or another. I've been applying like mad to just about every job that seems like it would be a good fit. What is maddening is that a lot of places want a graphic designer AND a web designer all in one. Our curriculum covered user interfaces and things like that, but never went over any HTML or CSS. That's what the Web Design & Interactive Media degree program is for. I guess a lot of places now want to save money by hiring one "jack of all trades" instead of specific specialists.

i dunno if these will show up here, as it's the photo hosting site of another forum i post on, but this is me...

Didn't notice the Norfolk references until Flukie called them out - are we talking Norfok, VA? If so, I lived there from 2001-2008 and have excellent memories.

Also, Praetor and Shameless ... you guys are hilarious. My hetero-blush is in full force. :)

The way it seems to be here, and I'm sure there are exceptions, a BS (or BSc as Canadian universities refer to them) aren't for a specific profession, that's a post grad degree, which is generally where Graphic Design falls into. Although, many university's are adding BA's in Graphic Design and Media/Web Design. A BSc is for...I know this is crazy...scientific subjects, like physics, chemistry, biology, etc.

All my friends in Graphic Design have post grad degrees. I've talked to a couple friends with BSc's, and they're kind of offended that a graphic design course could get you a BSc.

 Elitist pricks.

haha, you're barkin up the wrong tree there buddy
Shameless has stripped the bark off plenty of trees around here.

There's a lot of wood in those trees. ;)

We do what we can. ;)

You obviously don't know Shameless.

Play to my strengths, i say. ;)

I don't mean this to be offensive in any way, but I'm shocked that in the States, Graphic Design is a Bachelor of Science degree. In Canada, it's a Bachelor of Arts at its best and most rare, but nine times out of ten, it's a "mere" college post grad program.
I was wondering about this too, as Graphic Design seems more appropriate as an "arts" degree.

My alma mater in the US awarded B.S. (or S.B. per the university's quirks) degrees in one field only: engineering.

you goddamn Pinko Commie SOB!

(j/k;))

Heh, it was part of a teribly in-joke with another wrestler.. I'd just built a Communism Wow! campaign site the week before and we found the UK Communist party in the centre of Glasgow doing a little bit of campaigning.

I was standing there in my old Red Navy coat and he had all his Commie wrestling gear with him (and we'd been drinking since the night before, which helped) so we ended up buying half the stall's pins and newspapers.

He's got a copy of the Daily Mail hidden behind the cover :p

I'd never stoop that low!
