Hi all i am a huge star wars fan who thought I coudnt watch trek becasue you cant like both. Though all my star wars friends are upset but a took season one of deep space nine. I watched in a week. I am now on season 2. The trek boards don't have a lot of talking and I want to talk about the new show I like may soon love and could turn into a full blown trekie if ds9 stays as good as it is now. I love star gate as well. I am a huge teal'c fan. I love the whole warrior race thing. I am a martial arts teacher and christian preacher. Trek was not what I thought it was. I may try some of the movies and other shows down the road. How I went 38 years ignoring somthing I like so much so fast. Hope to find some cool people who like to talk ds9 with me.

I agree, Destructor. Trek is my favorite, obviously, but they are two very different franchises and there's different things to like/love about each one. Why pick if you don't have to?

Most people think it keeps getting better until at least early season 6. I'm a big fan of season 2, but if you like the show so far, then I will just say this: you have a lot to look forward to and a lot of great moments ahead.

DS9 is quite a bit different from other Trek shows in many respects, so that is something to keep in mind as well. I would say it is more common to go from being a fan of other Trek shows to being a fan of DS9 than vice versa. The show is a bit less accessible to some viewers than a show like TNG, but once you get into it, the rest of Trek can seem pretty bland by comparison.

Where did this idea of rivalry between Trek fans and SW fans start? This must be an internet thing. I'm a fan of both franchises, and I'd think if you were a sci-fi fan you'd like both as well.(though on the prequels your mileage may vary)

I agree...it's a silly thing to be upset about. If it weren't for a few people who like to fan the flames (that have no reason to exist), there would be no rivalry, period.

I love Star Wars, prequels just as much as original and I first saw Ep IV in the movies when it was released. AOTC is one of my favorite ever movies.

But ya know I don't have enough time to throw myself into two fandoms and Trek has been the one I hang out in.

WELCOME to Trek Kalskylander and if you like DS9's first season are you ever in for a treat as this series progresses. Since you're a preacher I will assume you enjoyed the wrestling with faith type issues in SW, well DS9 is the Trek series where these themes are long running and not dismissed. I've had several personal epiphanies watching DS9 over the years.

I hope you will post more and not be leery of newbie comments, I'd love to hear a first time Trek viewers impressions!

i dunno. as an 80s/early 90s kid i would always argue Star Trek VS Star Wars with my friends. i like both, i just like Star Trek more.

You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a Star Trek fan who doesn't also like Star Wars.

I don't like Star Wars. But I also don't like Voyager or Enterprise.
The first three Star Trek series are quite good though, with DS9 being excellent, but of course also with a lot of weaknesses.

Anyway, OP, you are a lucky bastard for discovering DS), especially since you watch it for the first time, as I would like to do that too, especially not knowing that the

You appear to be a little confused: you're allowed to like both Trek and Wars but you're not allowed to like both DS9 and Voyager. There was a big civil war in the Trek fandom back in the 90s while both shows were on the air and there's a very tense ceasefire in place for the last decade. TNG fans act like peacekeepers and try to stop both sides from developing nuclear weapons.

Trek was not what I thought it was.
DS9 isn't a normal Trek show. The other four shows are based on starships that travel across the galaxy visiting new locations and facing new problems each week with a couple of minor story-arcs thrown in. DS9, being set on a space station, revisits old problems regularly and the show develops many long-running story arcs that build up throughout the years and take centre-stage during the final seasons.

Both styles of shows are good, but don't expect the other Treks to be like DS9.

Hope to find some cool people who like to talk ds9 with me.
Cool people? On a Star Trek board? I don't think they're allowed here.

I didn't say you couldn't argue which one was BETTER, that seems like a natural argument since they're both sci-fi franchises. I was asking whose idea it was that you couldn't like them BOTH.

(Like you could argue baseball was better than football or vice versa, but it's stupid to suggest you have to pick one and dislike the other)

Right here. I never liked Star Wars and it has nothing to do with being a Star Trek fan. I'm sure if I'd never heard of Star Trek I still wouldn't like Star Wars. It's just one of those things that has a huge following that never really did anything for me and as the expression goes, 'I couldn't get into it'. I don't actively hate anything from that franchise, though, except for "Revenge of the Sith" which I truly believe is one of the worst movies I've ever seen (horrible acting, horrible dialogue, horrible special effects...horrible everything).

The original trilogy and "The Phantom Menace" simply made no impression on me. I watched them and didn't especially like or dislike them, and when they were over, I couldn't really remember anything about them. I saw them all as a teen when a lot of movies tended to be easily forgotten by me, so maybe I need to re-visit them, but there are also great movies I saw during this period of my life that I still cherish and adore. I never saw "Attack of the Clones", but I just found most of the other Star Wars movies forgettable. I really don't see what the big deal is.

Remember, the counterargument to "Profit and Lace" is "Threshold", and the counterargument to "Threshold" is "Profit and Lace". ;)

On a more serious note, welcome to the board and to Deep Space Nine, Kalskylander.:)

I'll ignore the rest about ROTS, but really you thought the special effects were horrible? I don't klnow what kind of standards you have, but that's the first I've heard that particular criticism.

(oh, and saying you just don't like CGI is not the same as saying the special effects are horrible)

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with it if a person decides to like both DS9 and VOY.

Now, bear in mind I am one of the biggest Niners you'll find. I can't stand VOY and I'm pretty iffy towards TNG, ENT, and even TOS to varying extents, and I can tell you exactly what I think of each series and why it is I think DS9 is the best.

BUT--I see that as no excuse to trash other people for what they like. I realize there is a lot that's a matter of taste, and I don't see why I have any right to flame people because they disagree with me. I may state my case but if you disagree, my attitude is to live and let live. :)

Too Much Fun--Try Attack of the Clones with a foreign language audio track. In all seriousness, I've never heard sound mixing THAT good on dubbing. The Spanish (North American version) is quite good, and some of the voice actors get quite close to their counterparts. And personally, I like the voice of the guy who does the dubbing for Palpatine better than the original actor. Very creepy and seductive, when he's in "Senador" mode.

You hippie peacenik, you! You're doing exactly what the TNG fans want us to do!

Dude. Let's, like, give peace a chance.

I just think Star Wars is a LOT of fun. Well, the original three movies, anyway. I don't look to that franchise for a lot of deeply moving dialog or anything, which is good because I'm not going to find it.;) It's just that that universe is fun to look at (I absolutely disagree with you on the special effects - I think we've disagreed on this sort of thing before) and the adventure is enjoyable. And the aliens are cool. Watching any of the first three movies is just really fun ride, so I like to sit back and enjoy.

GodPerson is kidding, Nerys. At least I'm pretty sure about that. He's just that kind of guy.
