Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Thats interesting and not bad at all. May I make a smallish suggestion? When I attempt to depict alien worlds I try to tweak the atmospheric colour just a bt to make them look a little less Earth like. Mind you I realize I cannot make it too different because they are supposedly visiting Class M Earth equivalent planets. OTH they did give Vulcan a reddish sky in "Amok Time" I believe.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Wow! The image with Pike's bridge and the Enterprise-D is really thought-provoking; you can imagine how futuristic it would look to them. Putting the NX-01 in the same viewscreen, by contrast, would look completely ridiculous; I for one wouldn't be able to believe it was from the past. And I'm sure Warped9 wouldn't either. ;)

The Ent-Ent-D picture is great!

webstat the desert looks a bit too bright, better make it a night sky

Actually, I think that's Captain Pike's hometown from "The Cage", so the Earth-like sky makes sense, as it's on Earth. ;)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Here are 2 digitally enhanced/modified screen shots from The Menagerie. Great episode, but those window scenes with Pike are just awful (you can actually see the fold in the blue wall behind the paper mache buildings in the original). I can't imagine how anyone could defend those horrid effects. I took the matte painting from that episode and modified it to fit the window in both of the screen shots. Before the trek purists flog me, keep in mind that I did try to retain the essence of what was clearly intended but never achieved by the original sfx. Also brightened the color throughout, and added a couple extra techno here and there (also using familiar tos technology). Enjoy!

You have to remember that when these f/x were first conceived televisions did not have the resolution we enjoy today and so a lot of flaws simply wouldn't have been so noticeable. Today, particularly with the dvd releases, we can see things we never saw before. The viewscreens on the overhead bridge consoles are a fair example--it wasn't a problem back then, but now one can sometimes clearly see the warping of the paper images.

"Alert! Alert! Captain to the Bridge."

A show of strength. The rumored new Klingon battle cruiser makes an appearance...

But in that episode it's not supposed to be Moabi.

Actually these shots remind me of Marvel Comics' brief run of Star Trek: Early Voyages. :)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Inspired by those excellent pics, here's another one:

"Captain, it appears to be an old-style sleeper ship!"

[without a gorgeous, hero-addled historian it'll be tough sledding for Khan... :D]

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

In a way it's a shame that there is so little Pike era materiel to work from and so few neat shots of the Enterprise filming model behind the scenes, particularly of the 1st pilot version. It's practically a ten year era of blank canvas and why I had such fun several months ago congguring up all those Pike era shots even in b&w.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ :D

In my own defense I will say that the shot of the E I used had been previously tweaked with a taller bridge dome, spikes on the engines, a larger deflector dish and some of the windows eliminated to be more in keeping with Pike's ship. :)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

I think they look about the right size. It's really tough to judge getting it right. There are three figures there with one behind another on the left and one alone on the right. The lighting and lack of detail may make them seem smaller than they are perhaps.
