Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Er, nice execution. But, uh, how do you explain how the ship gets sub-orbital without crashing into the ground?

Sulu! :D

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Okay. That would explain it.

A starship pulled down from the sky? The Enterprise struggles to remain in orbit while under attack from Landru...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

I take it that's a CGI Connie, right?

If so, that explains the hard shadow on the left nacelle pylon (and that wierd looking neck shadow?) :p

Anyway, even though it's a good shot, the grain differences between the planet and the Enterprise kinda ruin the shot. Either make the planet more blurry or clean up the Enterprise render (if it is one.)

Either way good shot. :)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Nope. It's a scratch-built model that I happened to come across on the net about a year or so ago--I think the guy did a damned nice job of it too. I downloaded some other shots of it thay I'll eventually find use for. :)

Both planet and ship have the same amount of grain added, but I added a touch of motion blur to the ship to suggest movement across the sceen.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Klaus, your pic really looks good. I'm not sure about the plausibility of it, though (the Enterprise doesn't look like a low-orbit capable ship). Also, why are the necells colorless?

Aside from that, like it said, it looks really good. I hope you do more later as well.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ ty! I got it from a pic of one of the models, the one in the Smithsonian I think, so there's no lights or other post-production stuff. Someone else used it for a wallpaper a while back as I recall...... I noticed the nacelles later, I'll try to add some color if I can make them look OK. I know it's the not the most realistic angle, but that was the best pic I found in a quick Google search so I decided to go w/it. I do a lot of Photoshop work making sigs usually, this photomanip is a fun thing to try, a lot different from artsy stuff...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^ Well the nacelles wouldn't be "on" if the ship was in the Atmosphere.

Wasn't the Enterprise in very low orbit in "Tomarrow is Yesterday"?

NICE!!! Do you have a larger version, it would make an excellent wallpaper!

I think what he was saying was that the reasion the horizon line seems off is because that the station is built near the edg of a cliff.

If you look closely you can see the line where the cliff would drop off. This is why the perspective seems off when it isn't really.

Perhaps a wider version of this matte painting will help clear things up.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Technically it's very good. But my quibble is that the mood of the scene is lost. TOS had a way of making you feel you were kinda out there with the crew in these lonely far off alien places...and your brightened skies loses that feeling. OTH it does give one some idea of what daylight might be like on such a planet, assuming it gets that bright on that world.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

It's tricky finding a good middleground in this--in other words knowing when to stop screwing with the original effects. I do think that the original matte painting is salvagable. The problem with the original (beyond the optical illusion of the layout) is that the sky appears obviously as a painting, you can even discern the brush strokes in areas. I have always been of the opinion that TOS does need re-imagined to a limited degree. It would be so cool to see this scene on the screen, maybe with a tiny dune buggy driving by in the foreground, slow movement of clouds, and a 3D rendition with the camera panning slowly. Oh well, back to reality.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Agreed. I've played around with it at times myself and never got the effect I wanted. Unless it's an unusual quality of the atmosphere the star simply looks kinda weird.

...love it!

"This is the Federation starship Ent-- err, a Federation starship."

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

This was a bit of a nutty exercise and done rather quick-and-dirty. But the question is: did Pike's ship go into the future or did the 1701D travel into the past?
