Netflix greenlights new "Lost in Space"

My kids had a really hard time continuing after that episode. Fortunately the next episode is happier. Of course "happier" is relative. I just mean they didn't both go to bed sobbing. Yikes.

(They'll finish the show after we're out of our ALL MARVEL ALL THE TIME mode this weekend.)

Just finished the second episode, starting on third. Again, really impressed by the show and highly enjoy it.

It is maybe telling that they don't entrust the colonists with the ability to create a handgun. You would think just for survival purposes a rifle at least could be handy.
They were expecting to be at a semi-established colony at Alpha Centauri, not a dangerous unknown world.

^And I don't think firearms are banned so much as carefully controlled and possibly licensed since 1) the pattern is in the printer's database at all and 2) it specifically said it needed the colony group leader's authorisation.

If the colony was the size of Paris but was the only colony on a world that we've only been on for two years, it's still a dangerous unknown world.

The pattern is NOT in the printer's database. John brought his own.

I took it the pattern was in the database as the robot printed a gun. (Granted I've only watched the first three episodes.)

John loaded the pattern in and the machine's security wouldn't let him print it.

Obviously the robot was a bit more of a hacker.

I had forgotten that he had used that flash drive to access the pattern. That adds an extra layer of culpability that he had introduced that pattern himself.

Ah, I forgot about the flashdrive thing, guess I assumed it was a access pass or something, but I guess it makes sense it was him loading the gun's pattern into the replicator, er, 3D printer. ;)

Maybe I misinterpreted, but I took the "flashdrive" as an ID or security dongle of some sort.
No, later on Maureen is shocked not that he had access but that the pattern was even there.

I'll have to go find the scene with John trying to print it again.

As I said, I thought the thumb-drive was a security pass or something, but thinking it over the data could have been just the pattern for the gun (which if I recall wasn't that big when we see the window later describing the previous pattern "printed.") It is strange that they wouldn't have the ability to "print" weapons considering how useful they can be (i.e. hunting, protection from wild animals). You can argue safety concerns, but they're so heavily vetting the people making the trip you'd think they wouldn't be concerned about psychopaths getting through. (Though Dr. Smith and Will were able to slip through the flaws or manipulations in the system.)

It's odd to me that Mr. Robinson, being military personnel, would need the approval of someone to "print" the gun. I could see him having sole access to the pattern (having the thumb drive) but why would he need permission to "print" it? He's military, I'd think the permission would be presumed.

Any rate, I've watched a few more episodes and had to stop for now. Just finished the one where Will tells the robot to jump off the cliff following the incident inside the Jupiter 2 with the woman, the gun, and Mr. Robinson.

Really liking Don West more and more, and full enjoy the girl playing Penny.

Penny and her rescue scene were just so awesome. She's one of the most fun characters. I just love that whole scene. Mina Sundwall is an excellent young actress.

She is doing a good job, I enjoy pretty much all of her scenes, her wit and stuff is just a lot of fun.

Is there some implied... "romance" between Don West and Judy? Because that feels awkward given then massive age difference between the characters AND the actors, but the flirtation and such is somewhat there.

It's also interesting to watch this and think of some similar parallels between it and the 1998 movie, mostly in how characters act and such it all very much feels like that movie. Though, to be honest, I don't recall the original show all that much so it could all be born from there, but the 1998 movie seemed to crank up the angst and grit. Don's "womanizing" ways, him butting heads with Mr. Robinson and some marital tension between Mr. and Mrs. Robinson.

Looking forward to finishing the season, probably tomorrow.

I think the Lost In Space 2018 Jupiter 2 orange hull markings is an intentional nod to the original 1965-68 series Spacepod hull color.

I've read orange was Irwin Allen's favorite color, so its use in the new LiS is deliberate homage.

The showrunners seem to have put a lot of thought into even the fine details. I appreciate that.
