Nemesis: Why the bad rap?

Battlefield Earth? Oh God that was horrible. It made absolutely no sense to me (of course I was fairly young at the time.) We rented it when we went on vacation to the lake and ended up regretting it.

I think the Picard clone, the Romulus-Remus material, and Data dying. I can't believe the isolationist Romulans would have a ... Picard clone run anything.

Didn't we have a darkside Picard with his Borg counter part?

I think there had to have been a better Romulan story than this out there.

Scimitar, etc felt like another big supership that needed to be overcome. (First Contact, anyone?). But at least the E wasn't shot down by a Bird of Prey this time.

Most people know that am a avid denfender of TREK at times but Nemesis was just poor. The amount of plot holes like the whole B-4 thing, the date that they gave for the creation of cloned Picard which at that time Picard was of no real importance in the Federation, that buggy crap and even the action was very plain and slow.

There's been worse sci-fi films, Battlefield Earth anyone?

So what? A gynecological exam with an ice-cold speculum is better than a root canal, but that doesn't make either one a good time.

50% of the readership can't even begin to imagine that one...

Well, Nemesis made 6 million dollars. While some might call that a good chunk of change, Paramount had to switch to generic coffee, and no more donuts. So they said to hell with this, we're selling off all your Star Trek toys, that shit's been piling up for years. Noooooo!!!
Did you folks see the uniforms going off on ebay? That was mildly entertaining this past summer. Data's main TNG suit went for around 3000 buckazoids.
I did enjoy Nemesis actually, although I had to forgive a few things. I was really surprised there was no sequel. I think that's the main reason Nemesis gets the Bolo award. Still, B4 goes over big with the shortbus crowd - - actually you know, I work with that population. It would have been easy for Spiner to step on a landmine with B4. Keeping it childlike, but not using any overt mannerisms of the retarded, was good work. To this day I like to twitch my head and sing "Never saw the sun....Never saw the sun...."
But there is one thing right about Nemesis at least, they left us wanting more.

It did things that were tired in TNG, as other mentioned:

1-"Evil" twin (both Picard and Data)!

2-Troi's mind get violated

And things were tired in Trek movies

1-One on one match between good ship and villain ship (As one person said "When did every Trek movie become The Wrath of Khan?")

2-Focus on 2 or 3 characters, with everyone else just background filler.

3-Plot that involves the fate of Earth, the galaxy, the Federation hanging in the balance, etc...not just something of importance to the characters.

4-The Enterprise getting trashed.

In general:

-The dune buggy scene rang false and wasted time.

-Remans were never mentioned or shown, but they act like they've been there all along. Rings false!

-The Remans being vampiric, led by a clone who needs Picard's blood (or some such).

-Romulans selling out their own to a human clone leading a slave race. Rings false.

-How did a slave race get a super big monster ship?

All that said, as movies go...it's watchable. But plotwise, it's nothing that couldn't have been done on t.v. in a three parter. What's Nemesis got over say, Enterprise's Augments arc? Better efffects?

Because it was a cheap knock-off of another movie? Another Star Trek movie?

TWOK was a good film, but NEM was just a pale imitation of it. Will leave the reasons why as listed above as plenty, but that's kinda it. If you write down the basic plot points, change a couple of character names, you can get to a bad version of TWOK without even trying...

You just made me simultaneoulsly cringe and giggle.

Well done. ;)

Okay, I confess. I was entertained by Nemesis. Yes, it was different than the other movies, but I was okay with that. I've seen it way more than once.

I liked it as well, no its not the best movies but it doesn't deserve all the bad rep' it gets

The designs of the Remans were based on Nosterafu.
I've seen and heard it before... I just still think it's a bit silly... Suddenly, I have a mental image of the crew equipped with something that shoots wooden stakes and garlic... :cardie:

I disagree. As someone who loves Star Trek and gives every incarnation a fair shake, I have to say that Nemesis was the worst Trek movie I've ever seen. That's not fanboyish hyperbole, either. If I were to rate all of the Star Trek movies, Nemesis would rate last.

On my top 25 favorite movies of all time, it's not even close. On my top 100, it's not even close. It would be in my bottom 10, #3 as a matter of fact. I don't even think it made a solid action movie. It sits a level above Apocalypse 3: Tribulation (2nd from bottom), and right below Battlefield Earth (4th from bottom). There's no character development, no real plot advancement, no notable dialogue (of the quality kind), no new or innovative filming techniques, no breakout acting role, no continuity or adherence to established history. In fact, the only thing Nemesis had was good CGI, and I'll give up movies for the rest of my life the day I consider CGI to be the most important factor in a Star Trek movie.

In my opinion, Nemesis deserves every lashing it gets. I might watch the movie once in a while, but every time I do I can't help but think what might have been. That's no way to enjoy a movie, especially a Star Trek movie.

I've watched Nemesis time and time again on DVD at home, and I don't understand why it got such a bad rap.
If you really can't see why people might dislike it, then you have problems.
