Need some advice on "catching up"

I'm starting up with Trek lit again and have a lot of catching up to do. Until just very recently, the year actually, other than the Eugenics War series and a couple of Mr. Shatner's novels, the last major Trek reading I'd done was all pre-2000. I haven't read any of the newer TNG/post DS9/post Voyager stuff. When I was still reading regularly, most of the novels were more or less stand alone episodes that didn't rely too heavily on anything else. Now, however, we have major on-going series like the Destiny/Typhon Pact series, and, if I did deeper, I'm certain they rely heavily on stuff before that. Now that I have Kindle and am reading more, I'm anxious to start catching up on some Trek goodness.

What would you guys suggest to someone wanting to start catching up with the newer novels? I'm sure this has been asked before to one degree or another so please feel free to refer me to another thread if that would be better.

For the record, I'm reading the most recent Vanguard novel, Precipice, now and I've really loved that series so far. I'm anxious to see what more is to come. Luckily, the whole series is more-or-less self-contained so I didn't have to worry too much about missing out on back-story and could just pick them up and start reading.

Thanks for your help guys. I'm really looking forward to a lot of great catch-up reading.

Sincerely,
- Byron

Thanks guys but I think I've answered my own question. I think most of what I'm wanting will be found in the sticky "Charting the Novel-verse" thread at the top of the list. You know, the one right there in plain view that I've seen every day I've logged onto the board for the past two months!

Anyway, I think I'm going to go save that thread locally and read through it to plan my attack on the world of Trek lit. If any of you have any specific suggestions, please feel free to pipe in.

Thanks guys.

Well, if you want to be more or less completist, that thread's "core continuity" for TNG, VOY, and Titan, as well as Articles Of The Federation (between Titan #2 and #3) and A Singular Destiny (immediately after Destiny) is your best bet.

Attached to that, if you'd like to go a little deeper, are the primary and secondary core continuities of DS9, the Klingon Empire books, the New Frontier books, and slightly more marginally the SCE series. But there's a lot there to start connecting to; if you want to be current with the 24th century, I'd really just read the ones I mentioned above, and maaaaaaaybe DS9 if you don't mind out-of-print-hunting. Several things established in DS9 are paying off in other series now, but chronologically it's way before any of the other "core continuities" and has a lot of (awesome, but still, a lot of) books to follow.

Personally, I'd say the SCE plays a bigger role in the continuity than KE/GKN or NF. There's alot more crossover between the other series and SCE than the other two.
