NCC -1701 (TOS).....

Until it can be accepted as valid in its own right as performances should be.

Which is what happened with nuBSG, both with the ship and the characters.

The main difference, of course, is that nuBSG never tried to pretend that it existed in the same continuity as old BSG, or that the titular ship in question was the exact same ship as the original, or have its fans go through hoops to come up with retcons as to why everything looks different, or why Starbuck is now suddenly a woman, etc. Ron Moore really wasn't about insulting the intelligence of his audience, or feeling the need to use old BSG as a crutch because he didn't trust that his own show would be able to stand on its own.

That's the responsibility of the NX-01 and by the opinion of a great many posters here, it didn't do it's job.

You can't come along 30+ years later and make the first Enterprise look like a Star Destroyer (as an example) and then say "You know, the next ship in line just really didn't follow the lineage. It's just kind of an odd duck."

Really they should have looked at a Civil War era ship and the U.S.S. Nimitz and said "They should have as much in common as that." (I HATE starship "evolution".)
This response makes it sound like you think I'm head-over-heels about the DSC/SNW Enterprise. To be totally 100% clear, I'm not. "Gets the job done" means I think it did what it intended to do. I don't agree with what it intended to do because, like I said, it's trying to please too many masters. But if their goal was, "Make a ship that looks like it came between the NX-01 and the TMP Refit!" they did it. I didn't say I thought the DSC/SNW Enterprise was some awesome design and that I'd cover up all my walls with posters of it.

And I'm not a fan of the NX-01 as you know, or ENT. So, trust me, I'm not the type who would complain if ENT was totally ignored. It's just that I'm not going to complain if it's acknowledged either. My opinion of SNW in general is one step above my opinion of ENT. I like some episodes, but I'm not hooked on the series, and if it ended tomorrow I wouldn't care, but I'm not going to be rooting for its demise either.

Both Moya from FarScape and Lexx from Lexx are examples of ships in science-fiction too.

Whether either is sentient is debatable. Moya is probably closer to the definition, but in practice is basically an FTL capable space whale who can only communicate when linked to a pilot.

A character is someone who.has agency, can be interacted with and responds to that interaction.

The Enterprise is an input/output device that also serves as a vehicle for the crew to adventures. Being sentimental doesn't make an inanimate object a character.
