NBA Discussion - The Stretch Run

I hope the Lakers wrap it up tonight. And please guys make it easy on me...play strong throughout and kick butt.

YEAH, BABY!!!!

The Lakers almost gave that one away. I was worried after Gasol missed those free throws.

Nice win in San Antonio. We'll take it.

3-1 Good Guys!!!

:techman:
As someone with tickets to the Round D, HG3 (Game 6), I hope the Lakers win, but in reality, Brent Barry should have been shooting free throws!

Perhaps, but again I'd argue that the shot clock error on the previous play was just as bad. If the Lakers had a fresh 24, as they should have, LA could have run out the clock or the Spurs would have had to foul, giving the Lakers a shot at a 3 or 4 point lead.

Barry should've jumped into Fisher as soon as he felt contact and thrown the ball up immediately--the call would've been automatic.

You could argue that...
But you can't deny that he was fouled.

Well, the refs, the coach (“If I was the official,” Popovich said, “I wouldn’t have called that a foul.”), and Barry himself (“That shouldn’t be called in the Western Conference finals.”) said otherwise.

Think about it this way...what if Barry had hit the 3 pointer to win the game, but it was waived off for the contact foul before the shot? What would people say then?

I thought the play was perfectly (non) called. I hate...HATE it when the officials decide the game. I prefer the refs put their whistles away in the last seconds of a game, especially a playoff game. If that had been Kobe trying to score, I'd argue the same thing. Let the players decide it, not the refs.

Besides, the Spurs got a gift bucket on Timmy's 4-5 step stroll through the lane to that uncontested dunk. So they probably gave back that deuce when the refs failed to bail Brent Barry out. As usual, the calls have a way of evening themselves out.

I can hardly believe it. Just a year ago it seemed the franchise was in shambles, and then it got worse. The Lakers were the laughingstocks of the league.

Guess its true that things are never quite as bad as they seem.

PnG baby, till the casket drops!!!

Now the question becomes what team has a better shot--the Celts or Pistons...

Well, the Celtics have displayed an annoying inability to close out their opponents in these playoffs. They might have squeaked past the sub-.500 Hawks and the Cleveland LeBrons, but Detroit is actually a good team that knows how to win. I think that series will definitely go to a game 7, and the Pistons just might pull it out.

If the Celtics do make the Finals, however, the Lakers will win. They've showed a killer instinct that the Celtics simply don't possess.

I'm not sure about that.

I think the Lakers will struggle against either team.

It should be epic, regardless.

Kobe (arguably Fisher) is the only Laker with a demonstrated "killer instinct" on the Lakers from what I've seen.

And are you suggesting Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce don't have that killer instinct?

Both teams have exhibited mental lapses and inconsistency. It will come down to bench play and coaching strategy.

The former I'd say is a tie, the latter goes to Jackson, obviously.

As for Detroit, they are all about focus. When they're on, very tough to beat. When not, they're ballerinas.

Hamilton being hurt would seem to give the Celtics a better shot at trying to close out the series tonight. They said he's going to play through it, but if his dominant arm is all banged up (elbow injury), that can't help his shooting, and he's been their best scorer. Not sure if he's going to help them or hurt them by going out there vs. letting someone else have his minutes. Either way, could be an interesting game...

So if the Celtics do win tonight than the NBA will still take a week off to start the finals? That kind of sucks. Still, good win for the Lakers, and go whoever comes out in the east. I hope it's a good series.

Celtics/Lakers in the NBA Finals, can't ask for much better than that! I'm sure the NBA and the advertisers are happy to have the 2 big markets in it, too. Celts are back in the Finals!

Well, tonight, the Celtics found that spark to take over a game in the 4th, and put a nice stamp on their trip to the Finals. :)

All of the speculation about the Celts possibly becoming the first team to win an NBA championship without winning a road game was predicated upon the presumption that they would win all their home games.
They won 2 out of 3 road games in this round, so I guess they aren't worried about that home/road record anymore, and realized it might be easier to just win a couple on the road, and play fewer games :p
