NBA 2014-2015 Season Discussion

39 points on 37 shots. Kobe can't do that all season long.

Of course he can. He's chasing Kareem's scoring record.

Well, he just set the record for most missed shots in NBA history.

So that's something...
I don't know this for a Googleized fact, but I'de be willing to bet that the numbers 2,3. and 4 guys on that list are probably guys like Kareem, Jordan, Wilt, etc. It is a booby prize only for the all-time great.

Kareem and Wilt are centers so they probably never missed that many field goals. Now if you factor in missed free throws, that might be different.

Right, you have to be in the league a long time and play at a high level to even get that many shots. John Havlicek held the record before Kobe.

Still, it's a little funny.

BTW, Kobe's on pace to set the turnovers record before the scoring record, but it will be close. Assuming he sticks around long enough, he'll have to average 8.7 points per turnover in order to reach the scoring record before the turnover record.

No doubt Kobe will own several all time records when he leaves the NBA, testament to just what an extroidinary player he has been.

After all of the ridiculous stories over the summer about him suddenly being on his last legs, Kobe has returned to his usual position as one of the league's top scorers - at 36 years old, coming off an Achilles tendon tear and fractured kneecap. I don't think the league has ever seen a player with his combination of talent, focus, and drive (not to mention pain threshold).

This is all barring injury of course, because at age 36, injury is a much greater probability.

BTW, Digits, I'm surpised to hear that Hondo had been the league leader. He must have whiffed on a lot more layups from the wing than I thought he did. He sure as hell never seemed to miss any in all those Finals games agains the Lakers. Old wounds.

Let's see: 48 million AND woe is me?
Are you referring to Kobe's contract? If so, I say, still worth every penny of it regardless of record. ;)

You just worry about whether or not your Spurs are going to once again fall on their faces attempting to repeat as champs.

Actually, the Spurs would have been one of several ideal teams for Kobe this season. Having him, with Ginobli coming off the bench, would practically ensure another ring.

If it is worth every penny, then Kobe should stop whining and pretending he's still the guy trying to save everything. No one believes it.

Spurs will be there.

Kings...? Not so much.

:D

And Kobe on the Spurs? Not for 24 million a year, thanks...

What exactly do you claim he is whining about? He is the guy tryung to "save everything". What makes you think he isn't?

Spurs have never had a player like Kobe and that's probably a major reason their championship teams have never been considered "dominant", just really good. Even the recent Heat teams were considered dominant because they were able to return to the Finals and win back to back championships.

The Spurs core are made up of undeniably "nice" guys but you need some (junkyard) "dogs" in order to repeat as champs. Shaq had it, Kobe has it, even LeBron came through and finally proved he had it. Timmie (who I really do love as a player), Manu, and Parker are on the clock.

And just so you know, Kobe didn't "negotiate" or hold out for that salary. The Lakers offered it and he took it. It worked well for both parties. I would have preferred a smaller amount too, but the thought of him taking less money and playing for (perhaps) the Spurs, made me queasy. This could easily have happened. Pop loves Kobe.

Pop loves Kobe.

Long as he doesn't have to coach him!
Ha ha. That's your opinion. If you think Pop or any other coach in the league who has a contending team, and wants to win, wouldn't want to coach Kobe, then you greatly midjudge these guys' desire for a ring. Kobe won all 5 of his rings playing in a structured offense for a future Hall of Fame head coach (with strong leadersip skills, like Pop). He won the first 3 rings while not even being the focal point of the offense.

Don't kid yourself, Kobe being "uncoachable" is fan and sportwriter talk. As much as he has personally tortured the Spurs over the years, if the opportunity arose, Pop would take him in a heartbeat. He'd be a fool not to.

He'd be a fool not to.

Long as Kobe understood who's in charge. Phil had a lot to contend with and even wrote a book on it.
After writing that book, Phil returned to the Lakers and won 2 more rings with Kobe playing the MJ role in the Triangle. I have said for years now that Phil and Kobe just didn't fully understand each other at the begining of the relationship. You listen to the two of them talk about each other now and you can feel the love.

What Pop knows about Kobe is that he delivers - that he is one of those players who can make a way out of "no way" -- a trait shared by Tim Duncan.

Boy did Houston look bad tonight... and the Lakers actually looked pretty good!

They just needed Swaggy P back! ;)
Helped that D12 didn't play but still, a nice win. The Rox are flawed right now. Coming off a blow-out loss to a team they might meet in the playoffs and playing at home after 2 days off against a 2-9 (or whatever the record was) team, they should have rolled -- even without Dwight. They need D12 in order to beat the Lakers? At home?

Especially nice after idiot Jason Terry said before the game, that they would take the Memphis loss out on the Lakers.

Yeah, Swaggy makes a huge difference.

Pop is no dummy--he's not going to antagonize any team or player to the detriment of the Spurs. Not to say that he's lying, just that his views on certain players and teams may run deeper and be more complex than a soundbite for the media.

Surely the Spurs organization wouldn't pay 48 million to one player for the product on the court--it has hurt the Lakers tremendously, and Kobe bears some responsibility for his attitude.

I for one don't think an 8 spot is out of the question for the Lakers, by the way, but that will depend on team morale, among many other factors.

It would take a gargantuan step forward in the team leadership department on Kobe's part to take lethargic and angasty players like Boozer and Lin to consistently play up to their potential.

Edit: I think the Rockets are a mirage and will implode as the year goes on. Howard is by no means a leader of men, to McHale's chagrin.

And maybe cut some minutes on playing time to ensure you can go the whole season while your other players develop... that is, if their new coach has the balls and acumen to sit Kobe and have a game plan.

Anyway, pity me: I'm a Kings fan as well, and even this "new and improved" product I fear will struggle to finish ahead of the Lakers, let alone make the 8 seed.

And the Bulls are in town on tribute night... Be afraid...

Edit: I feel the Rockets are an illusion, and somehow old habits will doom them to another subpar season relative to roster. Howard is such an underachiever--except apparently in the getting multiple women pregnant and hitting his kid departments.
