Nature of the visual reboot

Visual reboot was what we got with the Klingons in TMP (not to mention the Enterprise and all the special effects). Most of the changes used excuses where they could (like a refit), but other changes are just ignored.

Until Enterprise came along of course...

Deep Space Nine used both the original Klingons and Enterprise.
I’m so glad they did - I love “trials”.

My point was that TMP Klingons were only a visual reboot until Enterprise and I love the augment virus storyline too fwiw :)

Trials is a nice one off.
As was “Mirror darkly” :)

Don’t get me wrong I’m not going to argue for a TOS clone on DSC. That would have looked decidedly fan filmy (not that there’s anything wrong with fan films!).

But I do think the visual reboot could have been more subtle. For me, that would have helped with the fact that DSC is set immediately prior to TOS.

I fanboy squeed for both.

A visual reboot was coming. I just hope season 2 is much more faithful to the look and spirit TOS established.
Something like this without being a cute easter egg.

Same goes for ships. Less harsh and jagged edges and more sleek and smooth like the Enterprise. I hope we'll see a Disco style Miranda in vain of it's new Enterprise.

Found this interesting tidbit on EAS of all places:

Updated user interfaces
The Original Series uses the techniques of the 1960s to visualize the technology of the 23rd century. It is appropriate that in a series made in the early 2000s, the consoles of a future starship shouldn't consist of chunky push buttons, static displays and analog instruments. The user interfaces were updated for Star Trek Enterprise, to a style that reflects the real-world development while not clashing too obviously with the one shown in TOS. The consoles still have mechanical buttons, but they are combined with graphic displays as they are necessary for a proper interaction.

Now, I'll grant that the nature of updating/rebooting and how much changes are acceptable will vary from person to person. But, it is always nice to see that there is an acknowledgement that an update is necessary.
