Course change to the far side of the planet to attempt a phaser attack against the planetary shields. This is in response to the explosive death of Marta and the weird comms with the landing party. The landing party is only Kirk and Spock same as it was on Organia.

2. There they are at the start of the episode: orbiting Earth circa 1969. Talk about moving the story along. That's fast.
3. Solve the mystery of how Earth avoided nuclear war in 1969.

Captain's log. Using the lightspeed breakaway factor, the Enterprise has moved back through time to the twentieth century. We are now in extended orbit around Earth, using our ship's deflector shields to remain unobserved. Our mission, historical research. We are monitoring Earth communications to find out how our planet survived desperate problems in the year 1968.

Wow the same game is still running? Here are the clues as I spend some time pondering:

Clue # 1 I think this is the only time the Enterprise follows such a route.

Clue # 2 Unlike the back and forward in 'Amok Time' and 'Let That Be Your Last Battlefield', this course change moves the story along.

Clue # 3 The course change is due to a mystery of sorts

Clue # 4 A similar route is taken in one or two episodes, but that is to pick up landing party personnel. This is a direct course change, which wouldn't/shouldn't have happened, if it weren't for a strange occurrence

Clue # 5 This is one of only two occurences, which feature this particular landing party 'grouping'.

Clue # 6 The grouping isn't character specific so much as gender specific

Clue # 7 This episode also features the only time such a story-telling device is used in TOS

1. Spock follows the unlikely route to a far away beam down point.
2 & 3. Where is the landing party? Let's go find them.
4. The missing personnel? Where are they?
5 & 6. Not a typical landing party.
7. There is no other episode with 3 disembodied brains of differing colors.
8. Dead combatant out, living combatant in.
9 & 10. The Providers interrupt Kirk's romantic run in the country side.
11 & 12. One of the Thralls dies.

2 & 3. The return is to investigate von Gelder's "mystery."
4. If van Gelder hadn't escaped the E would have continued on its merry way.
5 & 6. Kirk beams down with just Helen Noel. In "Shore Leave" when Kirk beams down, it is with Yeoman Barrows only.
7. Smuggling one self onto the E.
8. One cargo beam in, one cargo beam out.
9 & 10. Spock interrupts the kissing.
11 & 12. Dr. Adams dies.
