Name some changes you'd make to Odo's Arc

One I don't like is the "relationship" he had with Madame Founder and their alone time on DS9. Nope

I don't mind the relationship with the Founder. That's consistent enough.

But Odo is a basically a.....blob...he's not going to be interested in humanoids like Kira and the others.

I would have liked a long running story about how Odo turns in to a bench to lure Morn into sleeping on the promenade, but he keeps getting outsmarted, so he keeps escalating into more and more comfortable things until he's a full king sized poster bed and then Worf and Dax are feeling adventurous and get romantic on him and he's too embarrassed to reveal himself.
Then he can't look them in the eye until Vic Fontaine teaches him to just accept it.

Odo's a top five Trek character for me. There's very little I'd change. The only thing I'd do is enhance his rationale for doing what he does at the end of the series. The subtext is there, but the script itself feels rushed in that regard.

I would have liked to see the 'discussion' he had with Kira about his actions during the occupation of DS9 arc. Or you know, actually have had it be a serious issue for a while.

I would've used Odo as well Garak in the intelligence arc a bit more towards the end of the series rather than just Bashir.

It would have been nice to hear from Laas again. Did he rejoin the link after the wormhole was opened again at the end of the war?

Not enough was done with Odo as a humanoid. That should have lasted for at least a season since it was such a huge life altering change for the character. I did enjoy his roles in Apocalypse Rising and The Ascent though.

I agree. This was a wasted opportunity. Odo almost cost them the station but there was prety much no followup to this. It tarnished Odo in my opinion but he did redeem himself further on in the series.

I wouldn't change much.

When Odo had humanoid form sex with the female founder it confirmed that changelings have humanoid physical responses when in humanoid form.

I agree there we too little fallout from Odo's temporary betrayal.

Just more of what worked... Odo's distance and curiosity at the solids was neat. A few more creative uses of the shapeshifting ability beyond 'impersonation' ie.e some T-1000 type solutions to problems...

When Odo had humanoid sex with the female changeling her reaction seemed to be "That was pleasurable but it pales in comparison to the link".

I think this topic has been discussed before, but if changelings in human form didn't simulate humanoid internal organs it would be much easier to detect them. Odo says at one point "If you scan me as a rock, you detect a rock." So if you can't tell a human apart from a changeling with a tricorder, then it follows that their bodies in humanoid form are capable of responding in the same way to the same physical stimulus.

I'll agree with this. He does seem to adjust to life as a human way too easily.

This is exactly what I was about to storm into this thread and say. I think the biggest regret I have with Odo was this missing discussion. It really harmed the character after endangering his friends.

I agree with this as well, but to a lesser extent. I remember the cliffhanger at the end of season four and I though 'Shit! That's really going to mess him up!' Outside of Apocalypse Rising and The Ascent though, it didn't really.

I like your suggestion of keeping him solid for a year. Perhaps even slightly longer - wait until the Female Shapeshifter appears at the start of season six?

Would this mean no Children of Time? :o suppose whilst I'm making things up in my head we could move Children of Time into season six and replace one of the dull episodes in the middle of the season.

Odo </3 Kira

I thought their relationship was silly. It was the product of a TV thing where characters get together that normally wouldn't because the writers have them there to play with. They wanted to write a relationship and were poor at fleshing out main/recurring character couplings (e.g. I found Sisko/Kasidy dull).

Come to think of it, I also found both Sisko's and Jake's love-interest arcs troubling as they were usually (space-vampire aside) with black women...Jennifer, Fenna, Kasidy...Leanne, Korena, Kesha... But I digress:

I think Odo's arc might have been more tragic if it was his closest friend Kira that reminded him of himself when his people and romantic partner the "Female" Changeling beckoned him otherwise.

Hmm...I liked Odo and Kira together in part because they didn't seem like a stereotypical television couple. It was sort of beauty and the beast in a way. I loved that it developed over a looong time. The writers seemed to pick up on a touch of chemistry there, and the fact that Odo seemed to let his guard down a bit around her. I'm not sure if Rene acted that into the role, or if the writers thought of it beforehand - but brilliant either way. I loved it that we all knew Odo was in love with Kira and it seemed as though it took forever for Odo to admit out loud that he loved her (when he said "I love you" or "I'm in love with you" to the female changeling when she was posing as Kira, my wife said "finally!" LOL). I'm glad that Kira seemed to go through some boring (and more "typical") pairings in her life prior to finding love right in front of her with her best friend. It wasn't love at first sight. And I like it because - wow, does that happen a lot in real life! It happened to me.

I liked Sisko and Cassidy, though I think they could have done more with Cassidy being a little more deceptive and helping the other side to add more tension and conflict to that relationship. They started down that road, but unfortunately they turned her into a more innocent, safe character. But to me, they still worked just fine together. I secretly hoped mirror Jennifer would have come through the looking glass and hooked back up with Ben for a few episodes, only to tragically die once again (because that would have been so DS9).

I liked Odo in the first seasons as this kind of arch-curmudgeon type and as a kind father figure to Kira. I think they watered down those elements slightly and took the easy route by linking those two up. The parts where he's depicted as secretly pining for Kira I find aggravating as a recurring theme. Although, when they do eventually link up, it was reasonably done when I expected it wouldn't be. But I wouldn't have taken Odo in that direction at all.

Another episode featuring Dr. Mora would have been great. With flashbacks to their common past.

No wonder that I think that Odo is fascinating... I'm a Vorta after all. ;)

Hoping for a little Vorta-Founder romance?

(The Vorta did have gender, and they were uniquely sensual.)
