Myths and Misconceptions in Star Trek

Ever notice how Trill is never explicitly stated to be a UFP member, and the ep. "Equilibrium" strongly implies that it isn't a member, but everyone assumes that it is?

Considering we know of at least three Trills serving in Starfleet at around the same time (Jadzia, Ezri, the conn officer in Insurrection) I'd be very surprised to find out they aren't a member of the Federation.
But the same can be said of Bajorans (Ro Laren, Sito Jaxa, Tal Celes), so this isn't a conclusive proof.

True. Though would it make sense to have a Federation ambassador in Curzon who's planet wasn't a member of the Federation?

My theories of Enterprise and the Animated Series being separate alternate time lines is a myth. But they are plausible or believable myths (i.e. theories) based on the available information at hand, though.

It's either that or choose to either ignore the facts of their existence or make up your own theories or myths on how these series fit within the Prime Trek Universe.

Frankly, if any series should be considered an 'alternate timeline', then TOS is this series.
It fits in the least with the other series.
On the other hand, Ent/TNG/Movies/DS9/VOY are quite consistent, continuity-wise.

No. they made it clear that Bajor wasn't a Federation world from the way they talked about Bajorans and Bajor especially in Ensign Ro. Not to mention DS9.

True, although didn't Tal Celes say Starfleet Academy was showing favouritism towards Bajorans due to what the Cardassians were doing on Bajor? That could explain the numerous Bajorans in Starfleet despite Bajor not being a Federation member.

Here's a myth: Vulcans are pacifists. Not even close, if they were, they wouldn't join Starfleet because they would end up in combat situations.

:)
I'm not sure about commissioned officers in the US military, but there are certainly large numbers of enlisted in the American military services who are citizens of foreign nations. Bajorians in Starfleet might be an example of the Federation extending this practice to officers as well, select non-Federation peoples could enter the academy and Starfleet.

It a good way (the US military) of becoming a citizen. Also lots of personnel from the Philippines serve in the US forces, they realize that if push comes to shove the US has a better chance of defending their homeland than their own forces.

every ship mentioned but not seen in TOS is a Constitution class - IE: Intrepid, Republic, Yorktown.

BS. i refuse to believe it. even if it has a crew of 400, that just makes it roughly Constitution sized.

Interesting question. I think your world's government (governments) would have to be a part of the Federation, at least in some fashion, for someone to be considered a Federation citizen. I can't remember Dax even once referring to herself as a Federation citizen. There might even be a degree of doubt whether Worf ("legally") is a Federation citizen, probably is because of his adoption.

We've seen a Klingon as a senior officer on the Enterprise (Kurn), but that was a exchange program and he didn't wear the Starfleet uniform.

i would think Worf is a naturalised citizen after spending his childhood in the UFP, even before attending Starfleet Academy and then joining the fleet.

Shatner has done some fine work, when given the right project, work that was light years away from his "I'm William Shatner" persona. And a lot of it came before he did Star Trek.

There's the old misunderstanding about disobeying orders.

It's usually understood to be disobeying a lawful order that's a crime.

So when Kirk or whoever is being controlled by an alien entity or is an android duplicate or under the influence of an alien mind probe and tells Sulu to open fire on a starship of nuns then there's really no issue if Sulu disobeys.
Starfleet is not Nazi Germany!
