My theory on why Kes wasn't a more beloved character. Also opinion on Lien. post-"Voyager."

Geez....this is a whole different conversation. But dogs haven't been around long enough (dogs are a man made creation through selective breeding) and monkeys, well....monkeys in a way have evolved into talking beings. YOU are one of them.
But me and the other "developed monkeys" have a lifespan of 70-90 years.

Yeah, the heels were dumb, but it was the 90's. I don't think T'Pol had heels. They probably wanted her to be taller too.

As for catsuits, Seven gets an awful lot of flak on here for that, and the complaints are often used to slam the show as a whole, but I rarely hear the same gripes for any of the other catsuits. Troy wore a catsuit that always included a great deal of cleavage, and Kira wore a catsuit with heels that made no sense at all, as all other Bajorans continued wearing the same uniform. She even wore heels while pregnant!

B'Elanna, Kes, and Janeway wore heels, too.
But did B'Elanna, Kes and Janeway have as high heels as Seven?

Fortunately, Trek offers great resources to help one understand the science of evolution. I recommend viewings of "Threshold" and TNG's "Genesis"...

Not played, no, but I think 7's appearance was clearly intended as such. Why else the impossible catsuits that stressed certain parts of her body? Why those high heels? Why the make up that made her lips look fuller, etc? Can't have made her more 'efficient' in astrometrics :) Imho, she clearly was intended as 'the ice cold sex bomb that didn't know herself, or care about it'.

But, it isn't just the catsuit but the way she was marketed. A lot of the magazines, TV Guides and the like, portrayed Seven far more as "beautiful" and "sexy" than others:

Compared to this, which was just one issue before, of another female character:

Sorry, there was more than just the show that informed my point of view.

That was part of my imaginary evolution doctoral studies at Daystrom.

Here, I Googled this and the interesting discussion on dogs, and how selective pressures have impacted their adaptation, especially in Russia.

It makes me wonder if the Ocampa had some genetic tampering by the Caretakers that resulted in some damage to their genetics, and hence Kes' changes after leaving that environment. My contention is that the Ocampan life span isn't as much the issue, but their reproductive cycle is truly baffling.

Ah, I remember those Star Trek magazines!

They all turned into the "Seven Of Nine Fan Magazine", competingt with each other about which was the most dedicated Seven fan magazines.

In each and everyone of them there was at leas one poster of Seven, at least one article about her and lots of comments about "beautiful Seven", "te sexy Borg" and "Seven saved the show". :barf2:

No wonder that I really disliked the character then when they tried so hard to push her down our throats.

I actualy stopped buying those magazines for many years, stll buys them only occasionally now.

Is there something "bad" here? I don't understand.

I don't like pixie characters or court jester characters for that matter. So Kes rarely connected with me. Some good episodes with her nothwithstanding but she wasn't particularly missed by me when she left the show.

I liked Seven as a character well enough. The media fuss over Seven's looks passed me by. The internet being in its infancy helped with this. She kind of vaguely filled the Vulcanesque science role one kind of subconsciously expects in Trek whilst Tuvok was doing his thing at security.

I think Kes had a prettier face than Seven, nicer looking eyes. Seven had the sexualized 'presentation'.

I wonder how much respect there was for the story telling of Kes at the end. I mean it's shallow stuff but it's continuity. I look at both those depictions of her being older and if Kes aged the way she was supposed to why did she look different in the two? I mean the hair doesn't make sense either. So she had the pixie hair for most of her life and then it got long (look at my avatar). Then she goes away and in Fury she comes back with short hair again. Yes, not impossible but out of whack in my opinion.

Sometimes I've wondered if they wore heels so they wouldn't appear too short (choice made by the producers of course).

I've always interpreted that the Caretaker did something to their lifespan and maybe their reproduction cycles. Perhaps as a population control. It's a little more humane than what happened to people who turned 30 in Logan's Run.

Some of these actors/actresses are short, lol. I remember getting into an elevator with a performer once and she was tiny. Like I'm not big weight wise and about 5' 8'' and I felt like an amazon. I've noticed Seven and her heels and like a corset or something showing through.

I disagree (and I apologize for the mistake in not saying lesbian when I should have): I think that Seven would have been very good in a relationship, and I think that he being in a relationship with Kes would have been amazing. Seven does not have to be a sexless scientist to be a great character, she can learn how to be human, grow, and love just like anybody else.
That's just it - NOT being "just like anybody else" is what made her unique and to take away everything that made her different would be to ruin the character.

II noticed some talk about Ocampa's short lifespan and for me that was always a intresting aspect to the race. The idea though they can only get pregant once seems to not make sense. In theory you would think a species with such a short lifespan would actually be super horny and would want to constantly be repoducing since you would have a never ending stream of people dying all the time and needing to be replaced. It's possible though the Caretaker altered them somehow once they moved underground.

As for Seven's outift I wonder how people would have seen her wearing a catsuit if they hadn't started with the way over the top silver one. All you would really need to do is make a catsuit seem kind of starfleet like and people would buy it a little better. KIra's for example was still red like the regular Bajoran outfits and sort of looked like them. Troi's outfit never really looked as tight on her as the other outfits that Kira and Seven had to wear. Plus it had a very bland color.

Not bad. Just different way of positioning the characters, portrayed as more "sexy" than others. So, while Seven was explicitly a sex object in the show, she was in the marketing. And that annoyed me to no end, especially within my circle of friends.

I agree. Kes is beautiful while Seven is "sexy".

I remember Seven becoming a laughing stock among some people I know who were more into TOS and TNG than Voyager . One of my friends, an ardent TOS fan said to me: "They must be in real trouble with that series if they bring in such a character."

I also think Kes was sexy IMO but they didn't do her favors with a really bad wig in season 1. I thought her hair looked better by the time season 2 rolled around but am I the only one who didn't like the long hair and catsuit look? The hair was okay but I liked it when it was shorter but if they wanted to get her out of the skirt I would have liked to see them give her a starfleet uniform. She could have been a non com like O'Brien if they felt to need to justify which they wouldn't since you know there are marquis aboard with no starfleet training at all who had to wear a starfleet uniform.

To you and YOUR friends, yes. To me and millions of others (both men and women), no. This uptightness about what people wear is prudish nonsense that needs to stop.
