I own all 3 of the current gen consoles, and the PS3 is by far the most disappointing. If the next Playstation is actually good I'll have no problem pimping that out, like I did PS1 vs N64.
If I may ask a question, (and this is a sincere question, NOT an attempt at starting fight), what exactly do you mean by that? What do you find "disappointing?" Do you mean you don't like the PS3 exclusives?
I'm sincerely curious because I'm also an owner of all 3 systems, and frankly other than exclusives and maybe whether or not you like the controller, there really isn't any difference in the experience they gave me. (I mean between 360 and PS3, Wii IS a differnet experience) I owned
Call of Duty Modern Warfare on the 360 and later on the PS3 (so I could play with my friends) and it was the same game playing experience.
Like I said, I'm just curious, always trying to understand what gamers are thinking as maybe I'm missing something.
I'll be happy to list off things I don't like about PS3, I hope you like walls of text
First, something that you mentioned. You're right, I don't like the controller. Keep in my mind I have a launch PS3 (20gb, no floofy wirless or memory card reader!

), the downside is I have the retarded and gimmicky Sixaxis controller. I bought one right away as Sony assured us that rumble was a feature of the past and they weren't going to support it (on account of that Immersion lawsuit) So I buy a second controller too, and then a few months later they put out the Dualshock. Pretty infuriating stuff. Then I have issues with the controller regardless of feeling screwed on the Dualshock issue. The triggers are retarded. Why they hell are they convex instead of concave? It makes no sense. Developers realized how terrible it was and started mapping FPS fire controls to R1 instead. And then the motion sensitivity is so utterly pointless and useless, and such a transparent and panicked 'holy shit we have to counter the Wii' reaction that it's just sad. The layout is annoying as well. I understand why the original Dualshock had the analog sticks where it did. After all, they were added on after the fact to the original PS controller. But why are they still in the same position? It makes no sense to me. I love how Microsoft promoted the thumbstick to the 'primary' position on the left side of the controller. It makes sense with how these games played today. The D-Pad is often just the 'least useful 4 extra buttons' in modern control schemes. Why is it under your thumb's natural resting position? It's not because it's more comfortable, it's just because people are used to it. It's bad design, plain and simple.
Then there's Blu-ray. It's great I have the new standard for watching movies on my HDTV, but from the perspective of actually playing games it wasn't a great choice. The damned thing is slow. So slow that many PS3 games have mandatory installs. That's certainly nothing I ever envisioned at launch. With the 20GB model which I have it's one reason to avoid multiplatform games on the PS3. To their credit though, they made it really easy to upgrade to a larger hard disk. Microsoft 120GB was quite the scam even when I got it for 50 dollars off. HD-DVD was probably a better thought out platform, and Blu-ray only wins because Sony decided to abuse the loyalty of their user base.
There's arrogance and idiocy in the rest of the design. They put out a system with a weaker GPU than its one year older competitor, and decided that somehow throwing a whole assload of processor cores into it would make it supremely powerful. Never mind that their development tools are so lacking that it takes developers far more work to achieve the same result as on 360. The net result is that 360 is typically the lead platform for multi-platform development, and generally has better performance. Sometimes equal, rarely inferior. I suppose if I only had PS3, I would appreciate the library much more, but when you have all three systems, PS3 is the one that sits out having zero advantages when it comes to multi-platform games.
I worked at Sony very briefly as a game tester. Worst job ever. I don't imagine that game tester is any better of a job at Microsoft or anything, but seeing how Sony was approaching things in early 2006, I probably should've known better than to buy at launch. Oh well. Score one for the Sony hype machine.
The firmware updates. They are so annoying. And way too frequent, especially in the first year. I don't want to be told that I have to download a new update EVERY DAMNED TIME I BOOT THE MACHINE UP. It's crazy, granted I don't use the PS3 all that much, but if it were the 360 that I didn't use much, I would only need to update once or twice a year. Also the download process is just terrible. First you download, then you have the extra install process on top of it that is even longer than the download? Why god why? On 360 you just download something and boom, it's done. Why do minor upgrades on PS3 take so long?
As for media/streaming, they are both utter failures. PS3 is a better DVD player, and obviously the Blu-ray is a bonus in that department. But what can I say, I like streaming media from my computer, and the best container format out there is MKV, which nobody wants to support. I had to buy a 'Popcorn Hour' box to handle my streaming video needs. Since the original Xbox was cracked, you could run an awesome full featured media center for streaming which is still light years ahead of anything the PS3 and Xbox 360 do today. The only problem is the original Xbox is a too slow to decode HD resolutions. Oh, and the Linux mode for PS3 is so gimped that you can't use that as a media box, which is just pathetic since that would've been the perfect place to build a PS3 media center app.
Trophies vs Achievements. Honestly I haven't paid much attention to Trophies. Achievements were pretty cool, but I'm kind of over them in a lot of cases. Designers pick really stupid criteria for achievements. I'll do them when they're fun, but the days of going for 1000/1000 are pretty much over, just because so many achievements are stupid grinds instead of fun side tasks. But still, this is an area where Microsoft wins. The 360 achievements were there from the beginning, which means everything on the system supports it from the get-go. With the PS3 support is spotty, sure it's getting better every day, but as a chronicle of your gaming history on the PS3, your trophies will thus still be spotty.
Xbox Live blows PSN away. I guess this is one case where you get what you pay for. I don't love spending 30 dollars a year on it, but what can you do? I hear PSN has been getting better, and of course they get points for being free, but when I tried getting into it in the early days it was just plain bad. Obviously this will vary from person to person, but the people I want to play with are on 360, so it's just another reason to go 360 on multiplatform games. The selection on Xbox Live arcade is far superior to PSN as well.
There's better compatibility for rhythm games on 360 as well, as in my GHWT controller will work on all my games in the GH and Rock Band series. I know that the PS3 compatibility has improved in the later games, but it's nice that it's hassle free on Xbox. More importantly the XNA allows for Rock Band Network (third party songs that don't have to be developed by Harmonix). The PS3 doesn't have the framework in place for something like that. I feel bad for PS3 Rock Band players because they just won't have the level of selection of 360 owners for Rock Band DLC in a couple of months.
There's not a whole lot to love for PS3 exclusives. GTA went mutliplatform, and exclusive for DLC on 360, so that was one big loss to the PS3. They lost Final Fantasy as an exclusive. I don't care for MGS. Little Big Planet was overhyped. In the end it was just a cute platformer with bad controls. I want to try out Wipeout HD, as that looks fun and the new expansion got good reviews though. But there's just not that much there. Resistance was terrible, especially when you put it head to head with Gears of War which launched around the same time. I'm sure God of War 3 will be badass but there's just not as much there as I thought when I initially purchased the thing.
The games I've spent the most time on, and enjoyed the most on PS3 are Lemmings and Super Stardust HD. To this point I'll say that the Sega Saturn offered me more at the time than PS3, and Saturn was very quickly clobbered out of existence by Playstation. At least it had some good Sega exclusives!
Oh, and one last thing that pissed me off about it. Of the 10 or so things that constitute my entertainment center: TV, surround sound, game consoles, set top boxes, etc... The ONLY thing with a grounded plug is the PS3. That wouldn't really be a problem, except it introduces an annoying ground loop into the system with my cable service. So if I leave the PS3 plugged in I get scrolling horizontal purple lines on my TV. Maybe I should just stick it into a cheater plug and be done with it, if every other damned thing in there can get by without a ground plug, what makes the PS3 so special?
