My sister Want's to get A PS3, is it worth it?

At least its a good Blu Ray set! lol

I actually agree with you for the most part, I do feel as if I lost money out on the deal. I hardly ever use it in comparison to my 360. But hey, each his own

It's funny how much use different people get out of the same thing. I use my PS3 so much that it would have been worth twice the price (500€) I paid for it. ;)

Seconded. I have a 360 and PS3 and if I had to choose between the two, I would throw away the 360 in a hot second. Besides being a wonderful machine (DVD's, Blu-ray, music, internet, interface, etc), the PS3 has an under-appreciated game library. I haven't turned on my 360 to play a game in months.

Praise aside, unless you have a burning desire to buy a PS3, just wait for the price drop. That will definitely happen by the end of the year, if not sooner.

The PS3 is a brilliant system, and its certainly worth it.

Although like others have said, it may be best to wait a little while... with the slim rumours and also price cut rumours you just don't know when or how much its going to be. To be fair though, you would think if it was anytime soon they would have announced it by now? I suspect they are waiting closer to Xmas time or something.

The whole built in wi-fi and free internet access for me was just too good. Ive had my system now for 2 years and never had a problem, I own most of the good exclusives for the PS3 and I gotta say most of the ones on the 360 (Halo, Gears) don't interest me too much when compared. But to each their own! Also, does any one use PS HOME here? I thought it was crap at first but lately its been getting a few updates and its quite fun if you give it a go haha, still trying to beat 51secs on the red bull air race tho, solid!

Actually, it isn't so shocking that they are denying all rumors. If they flat out admitted that they are going to drop the price in September and release a slim edition in November (or something along those lines) then people will wait until then to pick up the system. They're trying to hold out as long as they can so that they can keep selling what they have for the higher price

I own all 3 of the current gen consoles, and the PS3 is by far the most disappointing. If the next Playstation is actually good I'll have no problem pimping that out, like I did PS1 vs N64.

If I may ask a question, (and this is a sincere question, NOT an attempt at starting fight), what exactly do you mean by that? What do you find "disappointing?" Do you mean you don't like the PS3 exclusives?

I'm sincerely curious because I'm also an owner of all 3 systems, and frankly other than exclusives and maybe whether or not you like the controller, there really isn't any difference in the experience they gave me. (I mean between 360 and PS3, Wii IS a differnet experience) I owned Call of Duty Modern Warfare on the 360 and later on the PS3 (so I could play with my friends) and it was the same game playing experience.

Like I said, I'm just curious, always trying to understand what gamers are thinking as maybe I'm missing something.

I think the two biggest problems a lot of people had (and some still do) with the PS3 are:
- price
- lack of decent exclusives at launch

Until you decide to 'upgrade' your 360 to get all the stuff PS3 comes with out of the box (larger HD, wireless - then there was the HD-DVD add-on, and the possibly forthcoming blu-ray drive) and then there's the Live subscription.

The 360 is not the bargain people think it is.

Unless you don't need all that stuff. When I get some money I plan to buy the 360 Arcade, and I don't intend to upgrade it at all. Well, except for the HDMI cable, but you can buy those online for about $5. The 360 can be a huge bargain, even cheaper than the Wii, for some people.

I would hold off on the Arcade for a month or so. If the rumours are true, the Xbox 360 pro is being phased out, and to get rid of excess stock stores will be offering extremely good bundle deals. You might have to pay a bit more, but you could get a bargain.

As for the OP, at the moment i would say no, its not worth it. The PS3 is woefully overpriced, and its exclusives are disappointing to say the least. Wait for a price cut.
For the record, i own a 360, but i was a Sony fanboy until they priced me out of the market. The PS3 is a fine console, but they havent fulfilled its potential by a long shot. At the moment there is exactly 1 game i want to play on the PS3, compared to the dozen or more on the 360.

I like all the free games in Home like Poker, bowling, pool, red bull flying, and all those arcade games and all those different game specific rooms that have been appearing and rewarding people with clothes and exclusive stuff for use in their Home......and i was messing about with the demo of the Namco arcade games from the US PSN and i see the demo opened up some clothes and a arcade cabinet of galaga for your home personal space, and you can actually play it(although i could not get it to work seeing as it was a US PSN demo).

Those were my main issues with the system as well. I still think its priced too high, but I really wanted to play MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles. At the time I got it FFXIII was still exclusive as well. That being said, there haven't been too many other exclusives that make me want to rush out and buy the games, and I own the system already. That's the problem the system has to over come. It needs a sure fire system selling hit, and while it has well reviewed exclusives, they haven't released a game yet that makes people want to go out and buy it. Maybe God of War will do it, but I don't think it will. For multi-platform games, I almost always reach for the 360 version since I greatly prefer the controller and I feel as if the achievement system is better implemented than the trophy system

If I could marry my PS3, I would.

PS3 has amazing games and getting trophies gives you great motivation to play games (besides the awesome games themselves).

I have almost every console ever made and my PS3 is the one that gets the most love.

Well I get that for a new buyer but not somebody who says he already owns the system (as Yoda did). There's something about it after the fact he finds disappointing and I'm curious as to what that is.

Out of the two people I know with PS3's other than myself, they have both had problems with the DVD/Blu Ray Drives failing. One of them had to send it back to Sony to get it replaced, whereas the other one just updated his firmware and it magically fixed itself, although he seems to think he's on borrowed time.

Personally, I love its media capabilities. Streaming stuff from my Mac is brilliant. And Blu Rays look stunning. As for gaming, I'll admit the selection is pretty thin, and there's not really MUST HAVE games for me on the console (I like the look of LBP and Uncharted, but I cant bring myself to pay the money their asking for them).

I've been thinking a lot about other advantages (besides the Blu-Ray capability). Actually, I don't play a lot of console games, though I have two or three PS3 titles I like; e.g., Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and Streetfighter IV. I use my PS3 mostly for watching movies, going on-line, and managing some of my media files.

I had a very unpleasant experience with the system, however. Earlier this year, its laser reader burned out, and I couldn't play any DVDs, BDs, CDs or games, but everything else was working. What pissed me off was the fact that it broke down one month after the one-year warranty expired. :scream: I refused to pay Sony $160 to have it fixed; fortunately, I found a local service tech that fixed the unit for a reasonable fee.

So I'm a bit lukewarm about it. I've never owned an XBox and can't speak about its performance and quality.

Exactly. I don't need a larger HD. I barely even touch my 20GB as it is. And with the new update the files sizes are going to be improved. I run a wire to my Xbox. I don't need HD-DVD. I don't need Blu ray. I'm way too cheap to upgrade all my Dvds. I'm a bare bones kind of guy.

The Live Subscription. Let's delta between 360 pro ($300) vs PS3 ($400) this is Cdn $. So I have two years of using Live before I the cost of the 360 is greater. A lot can happen in 2 years.

Edit: this could be pure fanboy speculation but paying for live does have its privileges. Like the new COD 5 map pack it is was live for all over the world. PSN was a tiered launch. Also there was this experience: http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/live-vs-psn-cod-4

One feature i thank Sony for adding to the PS3 is the ability to install your own HDD, talk about a bargain feature, i installed a 320gig HDD for just under £45 and did it in 5 mins....absolutely cracking feature.

I'll be happy to list off things I don't like about PS3, I hope you like walls of text :)

First, something that you mentioned. You're right, I don't like the controller. Keep in my mind I have a launch PS3 (20gb, no floofy wirless or memory card reader! :)), the downside is I have the retarded and gimmicky Sixaxis controller. I bought one right away as Sony assured us that rumble was a feature of the past and they weren't going to support it (on account of that Immersion lawsuit) So I buy a second controller too, and then a few months later they put out the Dualshock. Pretty infuriating stuff. Then I have issues with the controller regardless of feeling screwed on the Dualshock issue. The triggers are retarded. Why they hell are they convex instead of concave? It makes no sense. Developers realized how terrible it was and started mapping FPS fire controls to R1 instead. And then the motion sensitivity is so utterly pointless and useless, and such a transparent and panicked 'holy shit we have to counter the Wii' reaction that it's just sad. The layout is annoying as well. I understand why the original Dualshock had the analog sticks where it did. After all, they were added on after the fact to the original PS controller. But why are they still in the same position? It makes no sense to me. I love how Microsoft promoted the thumbstick to the 'primary' position on the left side of the controller. It makes sense with how these games played today. The D-Pad is often just the 'least useful 4 extra buttons' in modern control schemes. Why is it under your thumb's natural resting position? It's not because it's more comfortable, it's just because people are used to it. It's bad design, plain and simple.

Then there's Blu-ray. It's great I have the new standard for watching movies on my HDTV, but from the perspective of actually playing games it wasn't a great choice. The damned thing is slow. So slow that many PS3 games have mandatory installs. That's certainly nothing I ever envisioned at launch. With the 20GB model which I have it's one reason to avoid multiplatform games on the PS3. To their credit though, they made it really easy to upgrade to a larger hard disk. Microsoft 120GB was quite the scam even when I got it for 50 dollars off. HD-DVD was probably a better thought out platform, and Blu-ray only wins because Sony decided to abuse the loyalty of their user base.

There's arrogance and idiocy in the rest of the design. They put out a system with a weaker GPU than its one year older competitor, and decided that somehow throwing a whole assload of processor cores into it would make it supremely powerful. Never mind that their development tools are so lacking that it takes developers far more work to achieve the same result as on 360. The net result is that 360 is typically the lead platform for multi-platform development, and generally has better performance. Sometimes equal, rarely inferior. I suppose if I only had PS3, I would appreciate the library much more, but when you have all three systems, PS3 is the one that sits out having zero advantages when it comes to multi-platform games.

I worked at Sony very briefly as a game tester. Worst job ever. I don't imagine that game tester is any better of a job at Microsoft or anything, but seeing how Sony was approaching things in early 2006, I probably should've known better than to buy at launch. Oh well. Score one for the Sony hype machine.

The firmware updates. They are so annoying. And way too frequent, especially in the first year. I don't want to be told that I have to download a new update EVERY DAMNED TIME I BOOT THE MACHINE UP. It's crazy, granted I don't use the PS3 all that much, but if it were the 360 that I didn't use much, I would only need to update once or twice a year. Also the download process is just terrible. First you download, then you have the extra install process on top of it that is even longer than the download? Why god why? On 360 you just download something and boom, it's done. Why do minor upgrades on PS3 take so long?

As for media/streaming, they are both utter failures. PS3 is a better DVD player, and obviously the Blu-ray is a bonus in that department. But what can I say, I like streaming media from my computer, and the best container format out there is MKV, which nobody wants to support. I had to buy a 'Popcorn Hour' box to handle my streaming video needs. Since the original Xbox was cracked, you could run an awesome full featured media center for streaming which is still light years ahead of anything the PS3 and Xbox 360 do today. The only problem is the original Xbox is a too slow to decode HD resolutions. Oh, and the Linux mode for PS3 is so gimped that you can't use that as a media box, which is just pathetic since that would've been the perfect place to build a PS3 media center app.

Trophies vs Achievements. Honestly I haven't paid much attention to Trophies. Achievements were pretty cool, but I'm kind of over them in a lot of cases. Designers pick really stupid criteria for achievements. I'll do them when they're fun, but the days of going for 1000/1000 are pretty much over, just because so many achievements are stupid grinds instead of fun side tasks. But still, this is an area where Microsoft wins. The 360 achievements were there from the beginning, which means everything on the system supports it from the get-go. With the PS3 support is spotty, sure it's getting better every day, but as a chronicle of your gaming history on the PS3, your trophies will thus still be spotty.

Xbox Live blows PSN away. I guess this is one case where you get what you pay for. I don't love spending 30 dollars a year on it, but what can you do? I hear PSN has been getting better, and of course they get points for being free, but when I tried getting into it in the early days it was just plain bad. Obviously this will vary from person to person, but the people I want to play with are on 360, so it's just another reason to go 360 on multiplatform games. The selection on Xbox Live arcade is far superior to PSN as well.

There's better compatibility for rhythm games on 360 as well, as in my GHWT controller will work on all my games in the GH and Rock Band series. I know that the PS3 compatibility has improved in the later games, but it's nice that it's hassle free on Xbox. More importantly the XNA allows for Rock Band Network (third party songs that don't have to be developed by Harmonix). The PS3 doesn't have the framework in place for something like that. I feel bad for PS3 Rock Band players because they just won't have the level of selection of 360 owners for Rock Band DLC in a couple of months.

There's not a whole lot to love for PS3 exclusives. GTA went mutliplatform, and exclusive for DLC on 360, so that was one big loss to the PS3. They lost Final Fantasy as an exclusive. I don't care for MGS. Little Big Planet was overhyped. In the end it was just a cute platformer with bad controls. I want to try out Wipeout HD, as that looks fun and the new expansion got good reviews though. But there's just not that much there. Resistance was terrible, especially when you put it head to head with Gears of War which launched around the same time. I'm sure God of War 3 will be badass but there's just not as much there as I thought when I initially purchased the thing.

The games I've spent the most time on, and enjoyed the most on PS3 are Lemmings and Super Stardust HD. To this point I'll say that the Sega Saturn offered me more at the time than PS3, and Saturn was very quickly clobbered out of existence by Playstation. At least it had some good Sega exclusives!

Oh, and one last thing that pissed me off about it. Of the 10 or so things that constitute my entertainment center: TV, surround sound, game consoles, set top boxes, etc... The ONLY thing with a grounded plug is the PS3. That wouldn't really be a problem, except it introduces an annoying ground loop into the system with my cable service. So if I leave the PS3 plugged in I get scrolling horizontal purple lines on my TV. Maybe I should just stick it into a cheater plug and be done with it, if every other damned thing in there can get by without a ground plug, what makes the PS3 so special?
