Is the PS3 worth getting?:vulcan: She already has a Wii, but wants to get a PS3 now. Is there anything we should know about the PS3 that would make us avoid getting one? And is the Blu-Ray feature any good? And does it have the reputation of dieing on you that the X-BOX has gotten?( the red ring O death)

Wait for a little while. It's almost certain that Sony is going to release a slim version of the PS3 within the next few months (possibly at a reduced price) and the old version will most likely be discounted or bundled to remove excess inventory.

A decent article with all the rumors about the PS3 Slim. I've also seen reports from a Gamestop employee that they've gotten in big $299 and $349 stickers, the kind they put on consoles.

Just tell her the best thing to do right now is wait. That's what I'm doing.

If she has an HDTV and has the PS3 properly set up (with HDMI) then Blu Ray is going to be higher quality then DVD. Right now the PS3 has no manufacturing issues like the 360.

Ya, she's brought up waiting for the ''SLIM'' version. Will the slim have the same stuff as the original? or are they cutting back on the features to make it a ''SLIM''?

There have been no official announcements regarding the Slim version, so anything we post in here about it just speculation. But yeah, the rumours are that the price will drop to $299 and that feature wise it should be pretty much the same as the regular version.

I've had my PS3 for almost two years now and I have to admit it's the best piece of tech I've ever owned. It's a a great gaming console, it plays Blu-rays, you can stream video, music, and pictures from your PC so overall it makes for one awesome multimedia system.

So yeah, I think it's totally worth getting. Oh and btw, rumours of a price cut have been surfacing for like a year now, so yeah it will probably happen sooner then later.

Again, this is all speculation but I don't see Sony dropping the price of the slim. They might drop the existing prices of the current systems to clear stock as was done with some of the other PS3 SKUs, but they can then say "Hey! We have this all-new slim console that fits in neatly with your home theater AND plays PS3 games! Buy it!!" and continue to sell it for the same prices we currently see.

They took a major financial beating early on if rumors about the PS3 initially costing $800 to $1,000 to produce are true. They'll want to keep prices as high as possible for as long as possible, public perceptions about "value" be damned.

There really haven't been any rumors about the tech specs of the slim so hard to say for sure. I figure the only things they could really cut out is wi-fi and any card readers (though I don't know if any models besides the 60 and 20 had card readers, Sony has released way too many of them).

It will be interesting to see how Sony prices the PS3 slim. Personally I'm hoping for $300 (which is about what I'm willing to spend on the PS3) but who knows. They're pretty hard to predict pricing wise this generation.

Yeah try and wait a bit longer and see how these Slim rumor pan out, as well as the rumor that the present PS3 on the shelves will be getting reduced bug time to get rid of all the old stock before the slim become the main production unit.

There are rumblings around the web about a price cut as soon as 8/18. So she might want to wait at least until that time.

As for the PS3, I've had a unit since a few months after launch and it's been a very reliable machine for me. Whether it's better or worse than Xbox 360 is one of those cans of worms that I don't want to open right now. Both consoles give you roughly the same experience, it boils down to which exclusives you like better.

As for blu-ray, I love it. If she's got a good HDTV and as someone said above, hooks up with a HDMI cable, you get a great picture. Even regular DVDs upscale pretty well on the PS3.

People always bitch about the price of the PS3, but here are 3 factors to consider IMHO. If you're connecting to the internet via a wireless connection, the PS3 has built-in wifi. If blu-ray/upscaling DVDs are important to you, the PS3 does that very well, and if you play games online, the PSN is free, wheras the major competitor charges $50 a year.

If these 3 factors aren't important to you, then it may not be a good investment compared to the 360.

Instead of getting into the whole 360 vs Ps3 debate. I'll explain why I choose the 360.

- Price a lot cheaper
- Ability to mod
- Feels like there is a greater cheaper games out there

No issues with RRoD yet with me and I love the ability to watch avi files on my Xbox.

If she doesn't dig Blu Ray then just get an Xbox. No reason to invest in the loser.

Until you decide to 'upgrade' your 360 to get all the stuff PS3 comes with out of the box (larger HD, wireless - then there was the HD-DVD add-on, and the possibly forthcoming blu-ray drive) and then there's the Live subscription.

The 360 is not the bargain people think it is.

That was exactly my point. If a person plans to play online, in 2 years you will have paid as much for the 360 as you did for the PS3.

If you don't play online, or don't connect via wi-fi, then the 360 maybe is a bargain.

Why are there a lot of 360 owners who are like political zealots and feel like they need to inject their beliefs into everything? I own a 360, I have a few friends who own 360s, and none of them are like that.

"Did you watch the Super Bowl?"
"If Kurt Warner was a 360 owner, he would've won."

"It looks like it's going to rain today."
"It would be sunny if God hadn't allowed PS3s to exist."

"How far along are you?"
"Four months."
"Well if any of your kids turn out to be PlayStation lovers, I'll have to go back in time and have them aborted."

Unless you don't need all that stuff. When I get some money I plan to buy the 360 Arcade, and I don't intend to upgrade it at all. Well, except for the HDMI cable, but you can buy those online for about $5. The 360 can be a huge bargain, even cheaper than the Wii, for some people.

I'm just looking out for people. I own all 3 of the current gen consoles, and the PS3 is by far the most disappointing. If the next Playstation is actually good I'll have no problem pimping that out, like I did PS1 vs N64.

There's something about seeing that overpriced ugly dust magnet in my entertainment center that makes me want to 'warn the others' :)
