My New Opinion of Nemesis

I have. And yes, they've both got huge plot problems. But overall Picard feels a lot more... well, like Picard. He's out there giving noble speeches about time or grappling with death in the family, or he's making sweeping moral gestures that jeopardise his career.
None of the TNG films are wholly satisfying, though FC is probably the best of the lot - yet really doesn't get Picard, the Picard I knew, as good as GEN and INS did.
I had some problems with Nemesis, particularly in regards to what I felt were some pretty egregious violations of continuity from the series (had the director watched much of the series before making the film?) and it could've been edited a lot better. I think that the deleted scenes were actually rather good and should've been left in, particularly the ending scene with the new commander. That being said, I didn't particularly dislike the film and loved the special effects, particularly in the space battle between the Enterprise and the Schimitar towards the end and Data's sacrifice was handled well. The main thing that I liked about the film, compared to the other ones was that there were some major changes with the characters and storylines. With the exception of "Generations" and the loss of the Enterprise-D (which was unexpected for me) and Kirk's death (which we all knew was coming but was still pretty dramatic nonetheless), there was nothing particularly dramatic about what happened in the movies since everything got "reset" and all of the characters basically ended up pretty much the same by the end of the movies. This was certainly NOT the case with Nemesis as several things permanently change: Troi & Riker get married and Will leaves to take command of his own starship along with Troi, Crusher leaves to go back to Starfleet Medical (although they didn't actually show her departure during the movie) and, of course, Data is destroyed, ultimately sacrificing himself to save the Enterprise and Earth, through the defeat of Shinzon, a "detente" with the Romulans also seems like a possibility by the end of the movie. Jerry Goldsmith, as usual, composes another excellent score for the movie as well. While it may not be among the best of the Trek movies, Nemesis really isn't really that bad of a movie, particularly if you are able to get beyond the continuity issues and just enjoy it for what it is.

That's possible, but I suspect the bigger problem than big meanyhead nasty message board writers hurting Stuart Baird's feelings was that Paramount spent as much money as the United States spent on World War II to make Nemesis and in turn earned very nearly $26.00 in worldwide ticket sales.
What should people who didn't need any help to find Nemesis incompetent do?
My complaints with NEMESIS start right with the main plot and roll downhill from there. I understand the "nature vs. nurture" inspiration, but it doesn't develop logically. Why would Shinzon be intent on destroying Picard and the Earth? What's his motivation? They haven't done anything to him. Wouldn't his anger be directed squarely at the Romulans for the way they've abused him from his very creation? One could argue that he's mentally unstable, but that would negate the "nature vs. nurture" premise and we're back at square one.
If they'd really wanted to explore that premise, they could have had Shinzon going to war AGAINST the Romulans, and Picard trying to stop it. This would contrast their different approaches to a common enemy and provide a true exploration of the "NvN" theme.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. In my opinion, anyway.

In other words, make the big space battle at the end twenty minutes longer, blow up more ships, and scrap that ridiculous Riker/Viceroy fight scene in the Jeffries Tube of Doom.
How about a simple, straight forward action adventure story?
- New Romulan preator comes to power; he's a fucking maniac
- Enterprise is sent to negotiate but gets ambushed instead
- Starfleet sent to intercept his invasion fleet in the Rift
- Big battle
- Enterprise vs. Scimitar on the fringe of big battle
- Scimitar kills data, Enterprise kills Scimitar, Preator dies
- The end
Sappy, but at least we'd get more kewl space battle junk and less badly written nonsense masquerading as a movie.

With two fairly straightforward changes, I believe Nemesis would have had the potential to be a great Trek film, possibly even a great film.

I like watching it, but it's flawed - there's a good movie trying to get out, and I prefer the alternate version described above. There were a lot of goofs, no-one was really in character, and Baird should never be let behind a camera again for all eternity.
The biggest goof, which even my dumbest co-viewer pointed out, was the Scimitar pulling away from the Enterprise following the ramming sequence - it violated the laws of physics in a manner that even my mums dog with her favorite tug-o-war toy would quickly point out.
There were some nice moments, and Data's death makes me tear up, but I like it as a simple bit of entertainment, and not much more.
