Well that was a hell of a season finale. Very good twist and I like the idea of Gowron being a changeling.

"Apocalypse Rising"

"Going on evidence picked up by Odo from the Founders, Sisko, Odo, O'Brien and Worf enter Klingon territory to expose Klingon High Council Leader Gowron as a Changeling. They end up in the right place, but discover that they have the wrong man."

I really didn't expect the Gowron problem to be solved so easily. I thought the arc would play out longer, they almost solved it too easily. Oh well, still highly enjoyable. The crew was great as Klingons.

"While the life of a crewmember hangs in the balance, Sisko struggles to gain control of a crashed Jem'Hadar warship. He wins, but finds the costs of the conflict too high."

Good episode. The episode felt very claustrophobic.

"While Worf helps Quark court Grilka, Quark's former "wife," on whom Worf himself has developed a crush, Dax plots to make Worf hers."

Below average episode. I do enjoy these character based episodes but this one was thin at best. I expected better from Ron Moore.

 

[Too Much Fun]

I'm in the same situation as you. I just started watching DS9 late last year for the first time and am currently just a little bit ahead of you on Season 5: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?". My favourites so far - "Trials and Tribble-Ations", "Re-Joined", and "To the Death". What are your favourites so far?

I'm enjoying the show, but I'm finding it maddeningly inconsistent. There are episodes that are just so rivetingly intense, exciting, and entertaining (like those three I listed) and then others that are painfully boring or cheesy (I especially loathe the ones that get all wrapped up in Bajoran politics). I'm also watching the 60s "Star Trek" for the first time and feel the same way about it, so I think the series is pretty much up to Star Trek standards of quality. A lot of fluctuation between superlative drama and comedy and almost unwatchably bad stories.

So far "The Visitor" and "The Way Of The Warrior" have been my favorite.

"Trapped with Bashir on a planet being assaulted by the Klingons, Jake panicks and flees a battle, lies to Bashir, and must come to terms with his cowardice."

Bashir has finally matured. Jake's actions were completely understandable and it was good to see a hero run away.

 

[Too Much Fun]

Yeah, "The Visitor" is pretty wonderful. Really intense and touching acting by everyone involved. "The Way of the Warrior" is another excellent choice...two of the most epic and cinematic Star Trek episodes I've seen. I really like the character of Jake...it's nice how he's vulnerable and has flaws unlike perfect Wesley on Next Generation. I also like how he's an aspiring writer...it's just unfortunate how horribly they used that aspect of his character in "The Muse".

Which characters are you enjoying most? I like all of them, but I find Odo the least appealing, although there have been episodes when I've felt bad for him. As I've said before, Dax is by far my favourite, but I also like Bashir and O'Brien a lot. I think the series has also made Worf even more interesting than he was on Next Generation (not that he wasn't already interesting) by putting him in social situations he hadn't dealt with before. I hated Kira at first, but I think she was softened and made a little more likable in seasons 4 and 5.

Worf and Sisko are my favorites. As the series has progressed I have enjoyed O'Brien and Bashirs friendship. They have had some fun moments. I can't stand Dax but I think that might be Terry Farrell's fault and not mine.

"The Assignment"

"Keiko O'Brien's body is possessed by an alien who forces O'Brien to secretly sabotage the station; if he refuses, the alien will kill his wife, and possibly his child as well. Fortunately, he manages to be one step ahead."

I enjoyed this episode. I was trying to figure it out the entire time. Rom was used to great effect. I can't believe people dont like him, he is a funny character. For the first time Odo was foiled by a simple punch to the face. How does it feel to be solid now?

"A vengeful Arne Darvin forces Sisko and crew to travel back in time to space station K-7, where Kirk's Enterprise once stopped a shipment of grain poisoned by the Klingons. Sisko has to save Kirk's life without stopping the historical inundation by tribbles, or the temporal authorities will punish him severely."

Such a fun episode. You could tell the writers had a lot of fun with this one. The footage with the original and DS9 crews was amazing. I remember seeing this episode when it first aired (who didn't see it?) and loving when Kirk asks O'Brien who started the fight.

I'm completely shocked that this thread has as many views as it does. I have provided little analysis of the episodes that I watch but it seems that people are reading this thread regardless. I would like to thank people for reading and I would love to hear some advice on how I can make this thread better.

Well, I love DS9 and I love when new people discover the show. It kind of feels like watching the series over again for the first time.

I'm rather interested to hear what you think of the series and the individual episodes... and I actually anticipate reading your thread when I know you are getting to a really solid episode.

Some of the stuff this season and next season are just jaw dropping, IMO. Can't wait till you get to the season finale!

If you ever make it through a second round of viewing, you may be surprised at how much some of these weaker episodes seem to come up after watching the whole thing.

It is obviously not as serialized as B5 and was never meant to be, but a lot of little character bits from early episodes really shine on through to the end of the series. It is a pretty cool journey, and IMO, the only Trek series that really has that epic feel.

I'm actually an old timer on this board. I've been here since 2001 or so. And I almost never visit the board anymore except to visit your thread and to check out the SF&F forum. So that is high praise for you.

Yay, vacation episode and on Risa nonetheless. The idea of the fundamentalist Essentialists made a lot of sense. However, Worf's actions did not make sense. He was quick to join them and even quicker to leave them.

For me this thread is similar to getting other people hooked on a dangerous narcotic in order to feel better about your own addiction.

Actually, you inspired me to do a similar thread on the Voyager board where I'm re-watching that show for the first time since it aired to see if it is as bad as I remembered. I don't know whether to thank you or curse you.

Haha. I was actually thinking about doing another series after I finished this one. I look forward to posting after every episode and it feels like I'm watching it with a community. Maybe I should do TNG next. I haven't watched my dvds in a least 4 years it would be a good excuse to go through them again.
