My First Tanning Session

:guffaw:

This is hilarious...I've been tanning since 1998...my only real worry was that my ass would be burned, but burning isn't very common in tanning beds. Back then the beds were kind of cramped for guys, but these days they're much roomier, and almost too relaxing to be in. I've never heard crackling noises before! I never use anything with SPF, and I use a tanning accelerator. I just hate being pale.

RAMA

 Glad i madeja laugh!

In the end, what's the point? Why should I bother tanning? What does it get me? Nothing, as far as I can tell.
There are definitely health benefits, especially if you're not getting enough natural sunlight and Vitamin D.

I recently had bloodwork done. My doctor, upon seeing the results said to me, GET OUTSIDE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! I have a mega lack of Vit D, so take prescription suppliments now. But, the tanning bed really made me feel good.

Neat. So do I.

It's not the only benefit. Again, if you're getting enough sunlight, you don't need to tan, but some of us spend the entire day indoors. I view tanning as a health supplement more than anything. It makes all the difference for me in the winter. I used to suffer from really bad depression in the winter until I started tanning.

I swear to god, i felt SO GOOD for a couple of hours after i walked out of there. No shit. I suffer from depression and have enough shit going on to make anyone want to put a gun in their mouth. But i felt amazing after i walked out of there.

That aspect of it was actually pretty fun because it really, noticeably improved my mood. It was also kind of dizzying getting back outside in the cold

"i cant believe i tanned before you" (somehow i deleted that part of your message).

Come over here so i can smack you in the head.

I've considered it before, but knowing my skin, I'd get out and find it stuck to the bottom of the tanning bed, or I'd look like one of those two day old hot dogs a gas station employee forgot to remove from the grill.

That said, there's something appealing to being so pale that when someone plays a trumpet near you, people start hitting their knees in prayer.

That's why you start slow. The first time I did it I was only in the bed for 5 minutes.

Same here. I paid the price that was for 15 minutes but i only did ten.

Well, I don't like the idea of going to a tanning session but I see why you did it. Still, I prefer the traditional way: Get a bottle of SPF 20 lotion and hit the beach!

Meh.

^ The beach is totally overrated. Or maybe I'm just bitter because the weather on the Baltic Sea coast sucks ass this summer

Yeah, im on LI, the beach is less than a mile from my home. i could give a shit. A million kids running around kicking sand.

Could my mind be any more blown?

I'll add my voice to those urging caution in using tanning beds. I've done a fair bit of research on pigment cells, I've been published in Pigment cell and Melanoma Research (even my data featured on the cover once), and I know the heads of several of the big labs in the field. Every one of them will tell you to avoid tanning beds and there have been several articles published in the journal examining the risk of tanning beds.

I could visualize the trepidation. :p

Most salons do offer some sort of spray tanning, there are also home kits. If you are too worried about the dangers of UV then they work pretty well these days.

Doing it for cosmetic reasons when tanning salons increase your melanoma risk just seems stupid to me. WHY? Seriously, why do you care if you skin is white? Also it's not like you can tan a few times and stay that way, this will take regular maintenance.

"The relevance of age was highlighted by a landmark study published in August. The Australian Melanoma Family Study found young people who used sun beds were 41 per cent more likely to develop melanoma than those who didn’t. This rose to twice as likely if they started before the age of 20 or reported more than 10 sessions."

As usual, these sorts of studies tend to be overstated...for 30 years there has been no major study that links melanoma to tanning beds (btw depsite what it sounds like, only a very small percentage of people get melanoma in the first place).

This one attempt at refuting one study doesn't mean that no other studies have made a connection. Go here (a scientific journal dedicated to melanoma and pigment cells) and do a search for tanning bed or something similar. You'll find several studies and literature reviews on the subject. If you want more, go search PubMed. The link is pretty well established, although some might quibble on the magnitude of the risk.

Must be nice to live close enough to a beach that this is an option.

Well, that's one of the good things in my country. I can be to a nice beach in 1 1/2 hours. :techman:

I guess if I lived somewhere in the North, I wouldn't like that method so much. I don't like cold water or big waves...

I don't know how much you need to do this before it becomes dangerous, but I have a friend who was a real beauty in her teens, after 20 years of "keeping her tan up" she now looks like one of my mum's old handbags.

Ironic (situationally) considering it was narcissism that set her on that path to start with.

I came to terms with my whiteness a long time ago, and I've stopped caring that I'm not as tan as other people. People do make remarks to me about the fact that I'm pale; I respond in the 'and?' vein.

If other people want to tan - it's your body, do what you want with it.

Same here. I was told, "Buy some vitamin D ON YOUR WAY HOME." And calcium. And all the damn milk I drink and no vitamin D to help it absorb meant calcium supplements, too. 5000 iu's daily is bringing my vitamin D to juuuuust within range that the doctors don't fuss.

Going to Disneyland tomorrow--gonna wear a long sleeve UV shirt and UV hat. Oh yeah, I'm out in the sun, but not reallly IN the sun, ya know?;)

Friends have said, "You should get a bit darker." I've challenged them to say to a black person, "You should get a bit lighter." Face it, I'm pink and that's that. I'm practicing self-acceptance a bit.

What? You think you get nothing? Surely you jest! You get a greater liklihood of skin cancer and you get premature aging of your skin (e.g. you get to look older sooner).

No moreso than if you were just to spend a lot of time outside.
