Uhura/Spock was done for to make the movie "HIP", IMO. It doesn't matter if the old farts (like me) like it or not; it was logical to do it. And I know many here still hate the spock/uhura stuff; but not me. I LIKED IT..IT WAS EXCITING!
And I hope they push the envelope with these two characters in TREK 2. And something tells me; they will. Now..all they have to do is introduce a hot babe for Kirk, and then they can double-date and REALLY give some inspiration for those "porn" versions of TREK....

I don't care if it's supposed to make it "hip", all I care about is that it makes the story a lot more interesting. Even TOS writers must have realized that there's only so many times you can use alien spores, weird space substances and what not in order to have Spock lose it and get emotional for an episode and fall in love, before you hit the reset button. It's certainly refreshing that Orci, Kurtzman & J.J. have the balls to go through with a story about Spock being in an actual relationship and ruffle a few feathers, instead of playing it safe, like the earlier TOS movies and TNG.
Let's see: how do we satisfy everyone? Let's have Spock frak Saavik, but it's acceptable because it's Pon Farr and he was a katra-less teenager (but don't ask what adult Spock does every 7 years to get 'relief'). Now let's drop some hints about Spock and Valeris, but don't go too far - let them have a candle-lit dinner in his quarters and some emotional scenes over her betrayal that show their closeness, so some people might go "hmm?" and the others could think nothing of it, nooo, come on, they're just mentor and protege.

And if you write an episode of TNG with Spock as a guest star, throw in a line about Sarek's son's
wedding, but when you're asked in interviews, don't confirm or deny that it is Spock. And while you're at it, add in a short, dialogue-free moment at the end of the episode in which a female Romulan resistance member is visibly upset when it seems that ambassador Spock is going to leave. You know that things like that will get noticed by people who like to imagine Spock getting nookie, but they're not obvious enough not to get ignored by those who want to think of him as asexual. Good way to have your cake and eat it!
