My daughter's Trek

Well..JJ has hooked my daughter. Something I have never been able to do in 15 years..how did he do it? Casting a HUNK to play Kirk..she now has a CAPTAIN KIRK poster on her wall....good going JJ!!! You know how to lure them in!!!

And now, for the first time ever, she actually watched KHAN (my new BLURAY version) and totally got the KOBYIASHI stuff...wow...incredible!!!

Rob

I have a 21 year old daughter myself and have never been able to get her into Star Trek. But she loved this new movie. I recently got her to watch the TNG episode the Inner Light. She rolled her eyes when I suggested it but really loved it after she watched it. So there is hope for her yet!

Over the weekend I caught my daugther texting with her friend at 1am in the morning (my daughter is 14). So her punnishment? I made her watch THE OFFSPRING!...she was crying when it was over....

She wants to go back and see STAR TREK at the theatre (gunning for you Jeri) So we might go again tonight if it works out...

JJ! you da bomb!!

This exchange last week with my daughter:

Me: "I'm going to see Star Trek tonight."

Kayla: "Dad...not again...

...can I go?"

Uhura/Spock was done for to make the movie "HIP", IMO. It doesn't matter if the old farts (like me) like it or not; it was logical to do it. And I know many here still hate the spock/uhura stuff; but not me. I LIKED IT..IT WAS EXCITING!

And I hope they push the envelope with these two characters in TREK 2. And something tells me; they will. Now..all they have to do is introduce a hot babe for Kirk, and then they can double-date and REALLY give some inspiration for those "porn" versions of TREK....

Rob
I don't care if it's supposed to make it "hip", all I care about is that it makes the story a lot more interesting. Even TOS writers must have realized that there's only so many times you can use alien spores, weird space substances and what not in order to have Spock lose it and get emotional for an episode and fall in love, before you hit the reset button. It's certainly refreshing that Orci, Kurtzman & J.J. have the balls to go through with a story about Spock being in an actual relationship and ruffle a few feathers, instead of playing it safe, like the earlier TOS movies and TNG.

Let's see: how do we satisfy everyone? Let's have Spock frak Saavik, but it's acceptable because it's Pon Farr and he was a katra-less teenager (but don't ask what adult Spock does every 7 years to get 'relief'). Now let's drop some hints about Spock and Valeris, but don't go too far - let them have a candle-lit dinner in his quarters and some emotional scenes over her betrayal that show their closeness, so some people might go "hmm?" and the others could think nothing of it, nooo, come on, they're just mentor and protege. :vulcan: And if you write an episode of TNG with Spock as a guest star, throw in a line about Sarek's son's wedding, but when you're asked in interviews, don't confirm or deny that it is Spock. And while you're at it, add in a short, dialogue-free moment at the end of the episode in which a female Romulan resistance member is visibly upset when it seems that ambassador Spock is going to leave. You know that things like that will get noticed by people who like to imagine Spock getting nookie, but they're not obvious enough not to get ignored by those who want to think of him as asexual. Good way to have your cake and eat it! :rommie:

I think the line about Spock's wedding, if it was his, came from the episode with Sarek. But thats my point. These are lines of dialog that only you and I and other TREK fans can recite...Paramount (JJ ABRAMS) can't sit there and worry about whether or not a line here and there doesn't jive with some trekkie/fanboy memories of what was said in 1 of over 600+ episodes...it would be unfair to expect them to adhere to, thankfully, a Timeline that has been obliterated in one movie...

This movie was shrewd as it was hip. And it made a tons of money and was quite well reviewed on ROTTENTOMATOES..and again..made some serious dough for a movie series that was LUCKY, utterly LUCKY, to even get another chance after the previous two TNG movies bombed...big time.

So..its all good with me...

Rob
I was making a point about the TOS movies writers/TNG writers...not J.J. Abrams or Orci & Kurtzman.

TNG writers threw in that line by Picard in "Unification": "I last met him [Sarek] at his son's wedding". And then when they were asked whether that meant Spock was married and had been married at some point (if he had, it must have been over or it wasn't much of marriage - he sure didn't seem married when he just left for Romulus!), they just avoided the answer and said "How do you know that Sarek doesn't have another son" (I guess that was a facetious reference to FF). Obviously, Spock having another brother or Spock having been married at some point between "Undiscovered Country" and "Unification" would both have been pretty important facts. It's not like he changed haircut, so you'd just mention it casually! But they obviously didn't really care about establishing 'canon' events, and were either not even thinking about it, or were just winding fans up and throwing them a bone, something for fans to discuss..

Thats awesome~i love it!!! i am so jealous~ i'm afraid i'll never be able to get my daughter to watch with me. But at least my son has said he is looking foward to seeing it with me once it comes out on dvd.
But my daughter? I'm afraid it'll never happen.

All this started from me watching TOS one afternoon, and my daughter came in from playing, and got interested in it.

She also considers Uhura as a role model, which I think is fantastic. She's got me on the lookout for when Nichelle Nichols or maybe Zoe Saldana will make an appearance in our area.

My kids are 9 and 6, so thus far I've only been able to interest them in TAS, but my 16 year old stepson is getting heavily into Trek, not because of Trek XI, though...he's into Trek gaming, and watches the eps and movies for ship ideas. He's actually started complaining already about how Trek XI violates continuity. And as a Canonite, I couldn't be prouder! :)

It does not violate continuity -- or canon. It's an alternate reality; the other realities still exist as they were.

I just realized I had this out on Photobucket. This is when we met Shatner last summer at a con in Cherry Hill, NJ. I'll see if I can find the other pic, one that made it into a Southern NJ newspaper. It was of my daughter playing with her Trek figures we bought for her there.

In this photo, there is my Mom and Dad, my wife in the green wraparound (no idea where she got it...), I'm in the gold TOS shirt, and my daughter is in the Uhura outfit, which we made for her:

Very sweet, KO! :D

Thank you, Jeri!

Here is the photo I was talking about, that was in the paper. And the con was July, 2007, not 2008.

I love this photo of my daughter, because of the wide-eyed look she has when she's playing and imagining:

KIRKOVERACTUS: omg those pics are so freakin' COOL!!! What an amazing thing to have. And i just LOVE your daughter with her action figure. You've made my day.

Poor Bill, he looks so tired!

KirkusOveractus, your daughter is so adorable! Her enraptured expression just melts my heart.

All the stories in this thread have been great to read. I got into Star Trek after seeing the new movie, and my own dad was quite excited when I told him about it. I'm an adult and no longer live at home, but I've been talking to my dad online as I work through the original series. We disagree on who the coolest character is (I have been informed that Kirk is "the man," which evidently negates all other arguments), but we sure have fun debating it! :)
