My daughter's Trek

So now the school kids wearing Star Trek are the ones going around beating up other kids? :)

I browsed the IMDb message boards for some of the cast, and they are full of posts that sound like they were made by teenagers. Girls who previously were hung up on Twilight have new hotties to gush about.

And in the grand scheme? THAT is a good thing. Far more important than canon and nacells and whether or not 'ships can do that in space'....

Some of our younger male TREK fans might actually 'score' before the age of 40!!!..Its hard to believe!!

Rob

Already done that! And I'm 18. Thanks to JJ Abrams talking about Trek in public school ain't no taboo speaking of which I have class in 45mins

My son, who is nine, has always steadfastly ignored Trek in favor of Star Wars. I've offered to show him episodes and movies many times, but he has always declined...until now. I haven't taken him to the new movie yet (I still think he may be a bit yound for some of it), but the commericals were enough to get him interested. We started with TWOK, and, as soon as it was over, he wanted to see TSFS. Now we're about halfway through TVH. I'm skipping TMP and TFF. Can't risk scaring him off, but I think he'll like TUC. After that, I'm not sure where we'll go. I'm going to try TOS, but I have a feeling he may gravitate more toward TNG or DS9.

Haha...this thread made me laugh because its a bunch of parents talking about getting their kids interested in Trek. Except in this case I'm the kid...also a teenage girl. It was an amazing movie!

I should see how my nephew is doing, re: Trek... though he is kinda young. My sis-in-law might have him close his eyes during the scene with Gaila... and he's a sensitive sort. He might not do too well with some of the tragic aspects.

He's a huuuuge SW fan, but my brother is very Trekked out, too, so we'll see if my nephew comes around. :)

Welcome! Great to see you here. :)

Well..JJ has hooked my daughter. Something I have never been able to do in 15 years..how did he do it? Casting a HUNK to play Kirk..she now has a CAPTAIN KIRK poster on her wall....good going JJ!!! You know how to lure them in!!!

And now, for the first time ever, she actually watched KHAN (my new BLURAY version) and totally got the KOBYIASHI stuff...wow...incredible!!!

Rob

That is really awesome. I am so happy for you! My 15-1/2 yr old daughter is still refusing to go. She is ashamed of her mom, the Trekkie (who, by the way also collects vintage Barbie dolls, so she is REALLY ashamed of me).

If i can't get her into the theater before it is totally gone i will just have to tie her up and force her to watch it when we get it on blue-ray.

I can at least take consolation in the fact that my almost 25 yr old son loved the movie and has now expressed interest in watching all the original series episodes and movies again, now that he can really appreciate them.

One out of two ain't bad!

Boooyah!

My 16 YO was intrigued when I told him, in preparation for the movie ,that one of the characters was a Vulcan and they didn't have feelings. He was intrigued and said that this couldn't be, and we talked. But after the movie, we realized that this aspect of Trek has been changed. He told me his friends mother said that "Spock was way to emotional and that he didn't have a love affair with Uhura in the original." I don't know my son's friend mother well, but I'm sure she would never post on the internet. But, though only one opinion, I wonder how much this accurately reflects the opinion of the silent baby boomer generation that grew up on TOS and were happy to see it back on the big screen only to be disappointed.

You shouldn't have told him inaccuracies to get him hooked. Vulcans were never presented as people without emotions in TOS, the movies, or the subsequent shows. And the half-Vulcan Spock certainly was never presented as a person without emotions. Nothing has been changed in that respect.

Uhura/Spock was done for to make the movie "HIP", IMO. It doesn't matter if the old farts (like me) like it or not; it was logical to do it. And I know many here still hate the spock/uhura stuff; but not me. I LIKED IT..IT WAS EXCITING!

And I hope they push the envelope with these two characters in TREK 2. And something tells me; they will. Now..all they have to do is introduce a hot babe for Kirk, and then they can double-date and REALLY give some inspiration for those "porn" versions of TREK....

I don't care if it's supposed to make it "hip", all I care about is that it makes the story a lot more interesting. Even TOS writers must have realized that there's only so many times you can use alien spores, weird space substances and what not in order to have Spock lose it and get emotional for an episode and fall in love, before you hit the reset button. It's certainly refreshing that Orci, Kurtzman & J.J. have the balls to go through with a story about Spock being in an actual relationship and ruffle a few feathers, instead of playing it safe, like the earlier TOS movies and TNG.

Let's see: how do we satisfy everyone? Let's have Spock frak Saavik, but it's acceptable because it's Pon Farr and he was a katra-less teenager (but don't ask what adult Spock does every 7 years to get 'relief'). Now let's drop some hints about Spock and Valeris, but don't go too far - let them have a candle-lit dinner in his quarters and some emotional scenes over her betrayal that show their closeness, so some people might go "hmm?" and the others could think nothing of it, nooo, come on, they're just mentor and protege. :vulcan: And if you write an episode of TNG with Spock as a guest star, throw in a line about Sarek's son's wedding, but when you're asked in interviews, don't confirm or deny that it is Spock. And while you're at it, add in a short, dialogue-free moment at the end of the episode in which a female Romulan resistance member is visibly upset when it seems that ambassador Spock is going to leave. You know that things like that will get noticed by people who like to imagine Spock getting nookie, but they're not obvious enough not to get ignored by those who want to think of him as asexual. Good way to have your cake and eat it! :rommie:

I think the line about Spock's wedding, if it was his, came from the episode with Sarek. But thats my point. These are lines of dialog that only you and I and other TREK fans can recite...Paramount (JJ ABRAMS) can't sit there and worry about whether or not a line here and there doesn't jive with some trekkie/fanboy memories of what was said in 1 of over 600+ episodes...it would be unfair to expect them to adhere to, thankfully, a Timeline that has been obliterated in one movie...

This movie was shrewd as it was hip. And it made a tons of money and was quite well reviewed on ROTTENTOMATOES..and again..made some serious dough for a movie series that was LUCKY, utterly LUCKY, to even get another chance after the previous two TNG movies bombed...big time.

So..its all good with me...
