My Clogged Sink

"My Clogged Sink"
by RoJoHen

Hi, my name is RoJoHen, and this is the story of my clogged sink. Several weeks ago, while washing my dishes, the sink started to back up. "Damn," I thought, "there must be a clog." I went to the store and bought some Drano, poured it down the sink, and let it do it's job. It seemed to work great, but then, a few days later, it started backing up again. "What the hell?" I asked, believing the clog to have already been removed.

I went to the store to buy a wrench, for I did not have a wrench large enough to remove the pipes underneath the drain. I figured, "If Drano won't work, I can just take the pipes apart and remove the clog by hand."

It started out fine. I unfastened one of the screws with no trouble at all. I went to loosen the second screw, but it wouldn't move. Instead, the whole pipe started to bend out of place. The next thing I know, the pipe cracks, and water comes pouring out!

"Fuck!" I thought. The whole pipe had corroded through. Through the crack, I saw a strange white object poking out. It was a plastic knife! "Well, that certainly doesn't belong there." I tapped it lightly, and it fell out...and then four more plastic knives fell out behind it! "Who the hell put these knives down my drain?!" I wondered.

It's too late now to go back to the hardware store to get a replacement pipe, so now I am unable to use my kitchen sink. Looks like I have a project for tomorrow morning!

Yeah, I seriously have no idea how the fuck those got there, nor any idea who has had access to my sink that would do that.

Did you ever consider calling a plumber?

(A few years ago, my kitchen sink was so badly clogged that the plumber had to call in reinforcements...)

Why would I call a plumber for something that I can easily fix myself? It's not like the plumber would be able to tell me how the knives got there!

My mom’s bathroom sink stopped working, then her washing machine, kitchen sink, etc. Everything worsening.

Turns out her 60 year old pipes were crumbling away. Everything had to be replaced. So $28,000 later, her house’s plumbing is just fine, thank you. And she had the little bathroom that was in horrible shape for over 20 years redone pretty cheaply but done well--taking to the studs and re-building. Which wasn’t that much more than ripping out the walls to get to the pipes anyway. Tiny bathroom, 6’ x 6’, just a sink, toilet, and shower.

My house is 70 years old. Whenever something goes weird with the plumbing, I worry a bit. And our sinks have no shut off valves. The pipes and taps are in the walls. The only shut off is the main shut off for the entire house. Which means to do ANYTHING, the entire system must be drained.

If you're replacing that trap yourself, get the PVC kind. Usually comes in a kit with the J bend & a tailpipe. PVC won't corrode like that.

I had a bunch of straws in the trap in my apartment's kitchen sink. Who knows how long they'd been there, but that kind of thing will accumulate other crap and cause the clog.

Well...it's too late for that. I already replaced it with the metal kind. :(

BUT...it works! And I'm sure it was a helluva lot cheaper than it would have been had I called a plumber. Wrench = $4. Pipes = $10. Done.

Many years ago, my laundry sink was clogged and I had to get a plumber in to unblock it because all efforts by me to unclogged it failed. When the plumber removed the pipe dozens of nails fell out. All three of my sons denied that they had put the nails down the sink but it had to be one of them who did it.

I suspect that the knives were put down your sink by former tenants but I don't know why they would have done it. I imagine it wouldn't be easy for a child to stick one down.

The funny thing is, the more I think about it, the more I get this very vague, blurry (drunk?) memory of someone putting knives down my sink. I feel like it may have happened at the party we had over the summer...and I feel like it may have been my friend Kevin. :klingon:
