Anakin Skywalker, Richard B. Riddick, Legolas, Jonathan Archer and any action movie character played by Shia Lebouf all have one thing in common when it comes to me. I don't care for them in the slightest.
When a movie comes out about some guy trying to make his way into the world, the least I would ask the movie to do is give me something to care and appreciate about this character so I can agree with the character's adventures being fulfilling. Some movies do a good job, others don't. What really irks me about this trend is when they spend so much time making us accept them.
This is my greatest fear I have about the new Star Trek movie. I might actually hate the character of James T. Kirk. From what I've seen in the trailers and spots, he has no redeeming qualities nor any elements that I find worthy of spending two hours trying to give a dang about. And since ALL of the marketing is focused solely on Kirk, every other character comes out more as stand ins just for the sake of completing the list of characters.
Just because he's Kirk doesn't mean I have to like him. And I hope to god that I do like him because I want this to be a great film so badly. But since they're throwing us more 'Kirk' than you can shake a stick at, some of the other characters (if they do get any screen time) might come out more likable than Kirk.
