My biggest fear? KIRK

Anakin Skywalker, Richard B. Riddick, Legolas, Jonathan Archer and any action movie character played by Shia Lebouf all have one thing in common when it comes to me. I don't care for them in the slightest.

When a movie comes out about some guy trying to make his way into the world, the least I would ask the movie to do is give me something to care and appreciate about this character so I can agree with the character's adventures being fulfilling. Some movies do a good job, others don't. What really irks me about this trend is when they spend so much time making us accept them.

This is my greatest fear I have about the new Star Trek movie. I might actually hate the character of James T. Kirk. From what I've seen in the trailers and spots, he has no redeeming qualities nor any elements that I find worthy of spending two hours trying to give a dang about. And since ALL of the marketing is focused solely on Kirk, every other character comes out more as stand ins just for the sake of completing the list of characters.

Just because he's Kirk doesn't mean I have to like him. And I hope to god that I do like him because I want this to be a great film so badly. But since they're throwing us more 'Kirk' than you can shake a stick at, some of the other characters (if they do get any screen time) might come out more likable than Kirk.

I, uh...I really have no fears about the movie.

For a brief while, I was concerned that it might follow me home and take my lunch money, or cause me to develop some kind of cancer. But on reflection I realized that it was a good idea to discuss such irrational fears with a therapist and I've gotten over them.

Well, back in the day most of us thought "Star Trek" was about Spock. He was the "break-out" when it ran on the network, and even NBC's people eventually recognized that he was the one to promote.

"Jim Kirk."

He'll do. :techman:

I think the whole idea for this movie, however, is that Kirk will be broken down and rebuilt. He's already a person of honor, he just needs discipline, at least I think.

What's wrong with Kirk as presented in the trailer? He's young. Brash. Athletic. Oversexed. A bit pushy. A little egotistical. Essentially he's everything but Shatner. ;)

When I watch the trailer and see Pine on the bridge of that ship standing next to Spock I'm seeing... I'm seeing someone with the energy and the looks to sell me on the fact that he's really James T. Kirk. The guy I grew up with but with a different mug.

What is it about him that you dislike? He hasn't done anything in that trailer other than the thing with the car that he hasn't done on tv in the movies and frankly...

He wasn't much of a driver on the tv show either. ;)

I fear that the original (and mostly typecast) actors became these characters and only they can credibly play them...not just Kirk.

But Kirk may be the hardest to emulate.

I didn't like how the new actor said he didn't try to mimic Kirk. That's precisely what he should have been doing.

There are a bunch of characters I would be hesitant to recast unless absolutely necessary, but none of them are from Star Trek. For the most part, the qualities that make various Trek characters (including Kirk) interesting aren't tied to the subtle qualities one actor brings to the part over another. For this film, Spock is probably the hardest to nail, but from what we've seen I think Quinto is up to the task. The cast in general looks good, I'm a bit iffy about the actor portraying Chekov, but it's Chekov, how much damage to the film can he really do?
