My 50th Anniversary experience

Well I am so THRILLED right now. I went into DC to look at the Starship Enterprise at the Air and Space museum. It's the 50th anniversary since the original series first aired. A woman with a video camera on a tripod comes over to me and asks if she can interview me cause I'm a Star Trek fan. I am wearing a t shirt with the Enterprise on the front. So I'm like okay. I'm not good in front of a camera but I think I did okay. Turns out she works for one of the local news agencies and wanted to ask me some questions about Star Trek. I think I was coherent. She told me I'm going to be on five mins to 6 tonight. Then I met a lady who was wearing a Federation T shirt and I struck up a conversation with her. She was talking pictures of the Starship and as we were chatting a guy from startrek.com news. SO if this is a dream don't wake me up!

I'm going to make one more trip to DC someday, for two reasons: to visit my uncle's gravesite at Arlington, and to see the Enterprise. Last time I saw her was in 1982, and I'm long overdue.

I have been watching at least two episodes per each STAR TREK show from The original series to Enterprise.

I watched Doomsday Machine. That's pretty much it.

Watched The Man Trap. Had no time to do more. Have been watching the TOS movies recently in the anniversary spirit. But yesterday was my busiest day of the week (as all Thursdays will be to December) so one episode (very late in the evening) was all I could manage.

I did listen to the Final Frontier score on my long drive home (not my favourite movie but my favourite score of the TOS films). Guess that counts for something.

I missed the 50th date as I have been in another city working and have had one of the worst most stressful weeks of my adult life. Words cannot express how thankful I am that BBC America is airing a Trek marathon on my days off and I have spent most of my time in the hotel room trying to rest from that week as well as preparing for the inevitable week of hell that's coming. Don't know anybody here, but at least I have some old friends on the t.v. to keep me company for the next day or so. I've kept the t.v. on since the marathon started and it's helped me relax some, lower my blood pressure and get some sleep after a largely sleepless week. The 50th anniversary just became special to me in a way that I didn't anticipate.

Well, I watched The Man Trap at 8:30 EST, a laserdisc version with period commercials inserted, which was a LOT of fun. A few days later, my wife surprised me with the 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray box set. Yeah, I already had the blu's, but this is such a great box and, for some reason, motivated me to watch the series all over again, but this time with the CGI effects. I usually, 99% of the time, stick with the originals. but this time, I'm going for the newer.

I really need to get to DC to see the newly restored model. That's definitely on my list.

Thank you. This week has been better, can't wait to return home and get back to more familiar environs. The nearby Half Price Books has all the original DVD releases, so I bought a couple on Monday so that I'd have a few episodes to watch after work. It's been awhile since I'd seen the original FX, and I'm interested to see how the quality from these DVD's are on my current t.v. The Blu-Ray's original FX quality was bad enough to take me out of the story.

I will say that it was great to see the original FX again on these DVD's.

I had toyed with the idea of a watch through for the 50th anniversary year, after this week, I plan on doing it when I get back home.

Thanks for sharing your experience! To, celebrate the 50th anniversary of ST I took a trip to NY for the STMissions convention at the Javits center. I took my 10 yr old daughter and we had a blast.

I was in DC for the 3 day 50th festivities as well, was a lot of fun. Was a good excuse to visit the Capital and see some stuff I hadn't seen before (MLK and FDR memorials) and to go back and visit old favorites (inclusing NASM of course). The highlight of the weekend (besides watching The Man Trap on an Imax screen on the 50th anniversary of its first airing (to the minute)) was when my wife and I ran into Bjo and John Trimble at the food court at the Museum of the American Indian (apparently the food there is supposed to be excellent, even if my buffalo chili was not so super). I had only intended to say hello, but they insisted on sitting and chatting with us for over an hour. Very nice people. Attached below is a pic I took that shows not just the newly restored big E, but the amazing Space Mural and (to far left) the Trimbles. For comparison, I've also attached a pic of my own Enterprise and Space Mural "tribute" mancave display (no miniature Trimbles are planned).

I didn't see Shatner because I only attended Saturday and he appeared Sunday. I did see a bunch of ST actors though.

My daughter and I decided that we'd each get an autograph - she loves Terry Farrell and got hers (Terry was very nice and spent a few minutes talking to her). I got Conner Trinneer's autograph, also a nice guy and chatted with me a few minutes as well. We both also got John de Lance's autograph at Star Trek On-line's vendor booth - also a very nice guy and seemed to really enjoy talking to my daughter.

We attended some panel discussions, one with Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller which was very enjoyable. We also sat in the audience for the ST writers discussion where Kirsten Beyer and Nicholas Meyer spoke and was very insightful.

We had a great time and it was a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ST. What makes it most special is I got to experience it with my daughter
