The Hunger Games: Mockingjay I
While not as good as Hunger Games or Catching Fire i still loved this movie. Yeah it's set up but I suspect (while not having read the books) the next one will be worth it. Also, I've had the song that Jennifer Lawrence sings stuck in my head almost all day.

Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, I love this Jennifer Lawrence, not the one who was in American Hustle. Katniss is a character we need more of, the strong willed but grounded character you can point to and say that yeah she is a hero. Jennifer Lawrence and Katniss is why I've really enjoyed these films and why Mockingjay was one of my most anticipated films this year. Also, I didn't realize she had a nice singing voice, but that scene was beautiful.

Intersteller

This was a very impressive movie. I was dreading the length and the comparison to 2001: A Space Oddessy but it ended up being a really really good film and one of my favorite films this year. It does lose points with the resolution but it gained it back at the very end. Also, the visuals were stunning and McConaghay and Hathaway were really good.

The splitting of final films into two parts is controversial, and the concern behind it is very obvious financial, but of the two "Part 1" films that I've seen (this and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1), I've liked both. Indeed, one of the things both films have been criticized for, the slowed-down pacing, I actually think is beneficial, as in both cases it allows for some of the series' most detailed character work. The film walks a fine line between showing the heroic aspects of Katniss' character and showing how that same heroism is "manufactured" and exploited by the rebel group she works for, which also becomes basically a commentary on movie-making. If done improperly this plotline could have come across very badly and seemed to be breaking the fourth wall, but it doesn't. Jennifer Lawrence continues to be superb in this role; it's easily the best lead performance in any of the YA franchises that have dominated the multiplex for the last decade or so. The film also does a really good job with Julianne Moore's President Coin, a character who is built up much more than in the novel, in a way that I think really works. The main thing that doesn't especially work here is Liam Hemsworth's Gale; this is the book where I recall Gale actually becoming a bit interesting, but Hemsworth is determinedly bland in the part.

127. Princess Mononoke (A)

I think the title character's title is used like once in the movie, which is confusing. The new Blu-ray releases seemed like a good opportunity to take a crack at the works of Miyazaki, which I've never had the opportunity to watch before (I wanted to go see The Wind Rises when it was in theatres, but I never found the time). I didn't know all that much about the film, and in the opening action sequence where the hero shoots his arrows into the eyes of the huge boar it was already noticeably more violent than you'd find in American animation; that's before you get to where his arrows cause men's limbs and heads to fly off their bodies (in an effect that really needs some cartoony sound effects, because while it sounds grim, it's actually a pretty hilarious visual). The animation is phenomenal, and I thought the story was quite interesting, especially as it initially seems like a fairly straightforward Captain Planet message, but complicates that considerably (though I suppose you could debate whether the movie's lack of any sort of resolution to the thematic conflict at issue is deep or futile; at the end, everybody goes back to doing what they were doing before, apart from Eboshi's talk of a 'better village', with no suggestion of what that would involve).

This film from Nickelodeon has it's charms in places but is essentially a "seen it once" and you're good type film. My girlfriend had wanted to watch this closer to Halloween but alas, here we are, more like Thanksgiving. The film takes place on Halloween night and it's name is derived from the "fun size" candy + plays on her little brother, who himself is something of a fun sized package of mischief for a 6yr old.

I had to look it up, the lead Victoria Justice, looks like she could be Katherine McPhee's sister. The actors must largely be Nick Studio players and I wasn't largely impressed with the acting. Chelsea Handler is playing the mom role, see what I mean. Unless your girlfriend wants to watch this or your really bored you can probably find something better--but it's not horrid.

Watched the Patton Oswalt special a couple of weeks ago, pretty funny, but not as good as the other one of his stand ups I've seen.

Rented a few movies for free from Hasting's yesterday, fell asleep durin' two of 'em, Hercules (with the Rock) and Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods.

TNM was alright, not as good as I had hoped, though. I like Pierce Brosnan, and wish he made good movies more often.

HtTYD2 was very good, though. I liked it quite a bit. Wish I had gotten to see the sequel in theaters, for the flyin' sequences.

Watchin' The Hunger Games: Catching Fire via Netflix Instant now, to get ready for the first part of Mockingjay.

The thinking man's Doctor Zhivago, and a leading candidate for the "would probably be an HBO miniseries if they made this in 2014" award (though HBO would probably have insisted on some nudity), a three-hour historical epic about the life of American Communist Party founder Jack Reed and his wife Louise Bryant. It's quite impressive that Warren Beatty was able to get this movie made, and also get people to go see it (though also, looking at Reed's bio, Beatty was too old for this part).

Diane Keaton more than matches Beatty in the acting department. The supporting cast is interestingly eclectic, including an underplaying Jack Nicholson as Eugene O'Neill (one isn't accustomed to seeing Nicholson this low-key); Maureen Stapleton won the Oscar for playing legendary anarchist Emma Goldman, and while she's quite good, nothing about the role really screams Best Supporting Actress to me; Edward Herrmann is also good in his small part.

In general, I think the 1910s are an underrepresented time period in cinema and pop culture, apart from movies about the military side of World War I. The intellectual ferment that Beatty focuses on here is one of the most interesting ideological periods in 20th century politics. There's a perverse form of nostalgia for an era when it really felt like people were going to reshape the world with ideas (they did, I guess, though not as they envisioned). One of the most compelling aspects of the movie is the documentary elements Beatty includes with surviving individuals from this period. I could easily have stood for a full documentary with those people.

129. Stand By Me (A-)

I didn't cotton to the fact that it was Richard Dreyfus in the opening scene, so toward the end of the movie I was increasingly making a lot of mental comparisons with America Graffiti (only for preteens), and then Dreyfus showed up. There's an interesting double-aspect to watching an old movie that is clearly itself programmed to function as a nostalgia-bomb. In this case, this has become a classic 80s movie, but it's aimed at viewers who at the time of release were at the same age and stage and Dreyfus's character (in their late thirties and now married with kids).

The four child actors are in great form here (Feldman is a bit OTT in places, but perhaps that's the writing) -- indeed, but for Phoenix, this movie was probably the highlight of everyone's career. it must be a bit odd to have done your best work before you've even gotten to high school. Kiefer Sutherland's bad guy is pretty cartoonish, but perhaps that's fitting for how children tend to perceive their nemeses. The ending strikes the right balance (Reiner and the screenwriters were wise to rein in the over-the-top pessimism of King's original ending, for a better and more realistic mix of good and bad, and which captures the wistful nature of people drifting apart).

130. Kiki's Delivery Service (B+)

Another Miyazaki film. I have a childhood memory, not the film itself, but of a music video for one of the English-language songs removed from the Blu-ray version; it used to run all the time on the Family Channel in the late 90s/early 00s (incidentally, another such Disney music video was a specific cover of "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" that I've never been able to find since then).

You can see that we're automatically in a friendlier universe than Princess Mononoke, since our basic premise of sending a 13-year-old with very little in the way of money or skills off on her own for a year and nothing much results away from light whimsy and a mild crisis of purpose. The movie is quite charming; not much more to say than that (oh, and also, you're still missed, Phil Hartman).

131. The Theory of Everything (B+)

And to conclude this spate of films, another much-talked-about film in this year's Oscar race, the story of the marriage of Stephen and Jane Hawking, based on the latter's memoir. This is the sort of movie that I think attracts a lot of unwarranted dismissiveness from some cinephile quarters because it's not dedicated to pushing the art form forward or whatever. It's not a revelatory story, no doubt, but I don't think the material calls for that. It's a very effective dramatization of the triumphs and pitfalls of the Hawkings' marriage, and how they accomplished quite a lot but ultimately couldn't stay married, despite everybody involved trying to make things work (which applies even to Jane's eventual second husband Jonathan).

The main reasons to see the movie are, as pretty much all the reviews say, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as the leads. Redmayne is an actor I've grown quite fond of, despite initially finding him kind of weird as a screen presence; he was a great Marius in Les Mis two years ago, and he's phenomenal as Hawking. His gradual physical deterioration draws much of the attention, but Redmayne also does a great job of showing how Hawking develops and deploys his humour to try and get by. I first saw Jones in Like Crazy, where I think she had talent, but I couldn't get past how much I wanted to punch both the leads of that movie in the face. Here, she gets a strong character to play, and she knocks it out of the park; Stephen is obviously the showier part, but Jones get a number of really dynamite moments.

This is one of those movies with a ton of recognizable British actors in minor parts. I spent much of the movie trying to identify the actor playing Stephen's school chum Bryan; a post-film consulting of the IMDb reveals that it's Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen).

Of course, she falls in love with him and the daughter with the dog and everyone has a Merry Christmas.

42) The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part I - B-

A review I read before going into this movie was that it was "a set up for Part II" and I couldn't agree more. All of the pieces are moved into place for the finale and nothing really exciting happens. There are some good small parts like mentioning Katniss' PTSD and the final shots of Peeta before the end of the movie, but this will go down as the weakest of the Hunger Games movies. I also question whether Julianne Moore will be able to carry the huge role she has been given.

43) Saving Santa - F

Another Christmas movie, but this one gains an auto-fail for the Santa cures Mommy's cancer ending. It was going to be a D+, mainly for bringing me entertainment for being so silly, even with Kevin Pollack as the villain, but try explaining to a kid who has a family member that has cancer that Santa doesn't actually cure cancer.

Friday: Chris Tucker & Ice Cube, this 90's classic still has it's charm. This was my first re-watch of this in some 15+ years so I was overdue a visit from this gem. It's still has fun as I remembered it being. In the "it holds up well" department Friday still has it!

White House Down: A solid film and Tatum does well in the action role. He's sold me in G.I. Joe as believable enough but I did like Gerard Butler better in Olympus Has Fallen. I think if they hadn't tried to insert so many wink, winks in there that Fox was playing a subdued satire of Obama it could've worked better. I found those distracting. I think OHF did a better job with it's child in danger element than WHD did. Although props for tying back to her "flag routine" for the finale. A solid enough movie to see at least once for sure.

As a side note I'm way off my pace for film watching this year.
I may not crack 75. Years past have been at or over 100.

^

Don't feel bad - my movie watchin' has dropped way down since I have to pay for my theater tickets again.

128. Fury ★★★1/2

I really enjoyed the movie. There's a scene in the middle of the movie that's more intense than any battle scene in the entire film. And Jon Bernthal deserves an Oscar.

129. I, Origins ★★★

It's a little too ambitious for its own good, but still worth watching. Brit Marling is amazing as always. Not on the same level as After Earth, though.

I'm almost burnt out at this point.

130. Nightcrawler ★★★1/2 - Jake Gylenhaal steals the screen. None of the rest of the characters or the plot matter.
131. The Skeleton Twins ★★★ - Some great acting. Probably one of the better films of the year, but I didn't find it emotionally engaging enough.

Now you may be thinking I've lost my mind, but this was not as bad as it could have been. We all know the meme and I remember when Aubrey Plaza was announced as the voice of Grumpy Cat, the internet world groaned.

But the way it was played as a spoof, never taking itself too seriously, poking fun at a lot of the Christmas conventions, with a lot of stupid looking shots of Grumpy Cat doing silly things, along with a child characters actions who make more sense than Home Alone's, it all works. Plaza as Grumpy Cat also works, given that Grumpy Cat is a female feline to begin with.

Don't go into this looking for Shakespeare. But it is a lot better and a lot funnier than most of the Christmas drek out there.

Given that Dean McDermott is in hot water for sleeping around on his wife, I found it ironic that he's kissing everything in sight in this movie.

Really, this movie is Jenny McCarthy versus a disgruntled elf and it's like picking your favorite toxic material.

Got off work Saturday afternoon, ran some errands & went over to the Carmike 6 for their 6:15 showin' of Christopher Nolan's new scifi epic.

I liked it quite a bit. Not my favorite of his films, of course, but still pretty damn good.

Hopin' to see The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part One some time this week, just gotta figure out when, since my sister & at least one nephew want to see it, too.

This 1927 pioneering film and considered by some a seminal work in both sci-fi and silent film by Fritz Lang is a chore to sit through but worth it. Taking into account when it was made and the style of storytelling I found it a bit hard to follow in places. I thought I had requested the newest version of the film with the found Argentinian footage but apparently I didn't. I viewed the one missing about 25min of footage and textual displays filled in the visual gaps.

That said I did find it intriguing the commentary Lang was discussing in the film. It illustrates that the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" is one that is old as time and really is never likely to go away. You also have the narrative of the father vs the son and the ideals of a younger man wanting to be better than his father. Again, another theme that is as old as time itself. The theme of machines, robots disguising as man(Maria in this case) and using mankind's inherent destructive forces against itself are things that make me wonder if pioneers in sci-fi like Asimov took influence from Metropolis?

I found the miniature work for the future city of Metropolis to be pretty impressive for it's time or nearly any decade till the 90's just about.

I may one day try to watch the fuller more restored version of the film but for now feel good to have seen this classic even in this state.

Wow, my last review was on November 30th. It really has been a hiatus from pop culture as a consequence of exam period. My friend and I celebrated the end of our exams on Friday with dinner and a Christmas movie, in this case, my first rewatch of Love Actually in a number of years. I still remember seeing this in theatres back in 2004 when it came out, but it's interested to revisit it ten years later. A number of aspects of it are little time capsules. In the macro context, the most obvious would be Hugh Grant's pseudo-Tony Blair (even though he's implied to have succeeded Tony Blair, suggesting he's a Tory, and he's named "David"; prescient), who articulates an Iraq War-era discontent with Blair's playing sidekick to George W. Bush. It also captures an era in the early 2000s when people still had VHS tapes and large portable stereo equipment.

Most of the main cast was already famous when the movie was made, but several of them (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Freeman, Andrew Lincoln) have become much more recognizable in the intervening decade (the collection of hot girls that Colin meets in the Wisconsin bar, on the other hand, is a bunch of cameo parts that are almost all way less prominent in pop culture now, apart from perhaps January Jones). Watching it this time it occurred to me that two of the stories feel like they're occurring at different paces compared to the movie's general timeframe (Colin Firth's and some aspects of Liam Neeson's), but whatever, it's not that kind of movie. Bill Nighy still steals the show.

133. We Are The Best! (A-)

Lukas Moodysson's adorable period piece about Bobo and Klara, two Swedish 13-year-old girls circa 1982 who decide to form a punk band largely as a way to spite a group of older boys and keep them from using a rehearsal room, only to decide to keep at it; along the way, they recruit another girl, Hedvig, who actually knows how to play an instrument. The film pretty casually ducks the clichés associated with this sort of story, following the girls as they mainly goof off (while occasionally engaging in highly contentious theistic debates; Klara is the most ardently atheist 13-year-old I've yet encountered), try to gain some rudimentary understanding of their instruments, resent their totally uncool parents, etc. Since the girls are entering puberty, the dread influence of boys is felt, but the pseudo-Yoko Ono episode is resolved with a comparative lack of fuss. This is basically a hangout movie, and I quite like spending time with all three.
